Gamenight: Phillies (12-11) At Pirates (9-13)

The Phillies received great relief pitching and timely hitting in a 3-1 win over the Brewers yesterday. pat Burrell continued his mammoth, machine-sized tear, while Tom Gordon defused a Brewers rally in the seventh.

Tonight the team meets Pittsburgh for a three-game set with the Pirates. The offense faces lefty Zach Duke. The Pirates will face Adam Eaton. Ryan Howard is not starting again, per manager’s orders. Instead, we have a crazy lineup: Brad Harman gets his first start, Chase Utley is at first base and Chris Coste is hitting fifth.

Phillies: Adam Eaton (0-0), 4.74 ERA
Pirates: Zach Duke (0-1), 4.37 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m.
Weather: 75 degrees, stormy
Lineup: Taguchi/Werth/Utley/Burrell/Coste/Feliz/Bruntlett/Harman/Eaton

Your gameday beer: With Howard out of the lineup, we need a hammer. Grab a Long Hammer IPA from Redhook Brewery. Not great, but certainly not terrible, it contains some citrus flavor and a light, almost minty kind of taste. Eat a chili dog with it — beef up, the Phils may need you to hit cleanup.

Go Phillies!

Odd looking lineup. But 2-0 already thanks to Coste!

And immediately Manuel’s move to start Coste and drop him into the No. 5 slot pays huge dividends.

thanks steve smith for being at a graduation bc if you were here you wouldn’t send utley and it would only be 1 to 0…romon henderson for full time 3rd base job…any1 else with me

Gutsy call by Ramon, however, for sure. But Utley goes hard the whole way and screws up Doumit in the process. It was a good call.

Ha. Utley picks at first better than Howard.

Machinista! Great hustle by Burrell the whole time – Phils take advantage of Pirates poor play.

Coste can play first; it’s a nice idea. And you make a good point about getting Chase out of whack by taking him off second. Also, are you drunk? “ewtta”? That’s way off.

Thats the lineup we all pictured out of ST isnt it. In fact it looks like an actual ST lineup. Damn.

  35. Greg

    April 25, 2008 at 9:25 pm

why would you bring Howard out? Gordon has a better shot at moving the runner.

  36. chris m

    April 25, 2008 at 9:28 pm

im making a bold prediction on this atbat that howard will strike out

  40. Paul

    April 25, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Howard is so lost right now.

  41. Greg

    April 25, 2008 at 9:32 pm

i dont see the logic in bringing him out to face one of the toughest pitchers for lefties to hit.

  42. Tim Malcolm

    April 25, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Again, you don’t bring in a player you intentionally sit to pinch hit. Bad, bad, bad.

  43. Greg

    April 25, 2008 at 9:38 pm

i disagree. the game is far more important than psychological maneuvers. I just don’t think that was the right spot. If we could have built on 6-0, then that is a leisure you can afford to take.

  44. Tim Malcolm

    April 25, 2008 at 9:51 pm

    Romero = clutch.

  45. Tim Malcolm

    April 25, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Sorry, Greg, but Jenkins would’ve at least put his bat on the ball. Howard needs to sit and not be part of the action. Even Charlie said himself that it got to the point where it didn’t matter who was on the mound (because he owned Suppan). It doesn’t matter the situation; Howard should NOT have hit.

  49. Greg

    April 25, 2008 at 10:02 pm

i think we’re arguing different points. Game trumps scheduled day off, but in this case Howard might as well be swinging a toy bat right now.

Wow. Lidge is dealing so far this year!

  53. Greg

    April 25, 2008 at 10:10 pm

nice to see we can still win when Utley and Burrell show they are still human and have a slow night.
