Nickname The Phillie: Ryan Howard

The Phillies have some fantastic nicknames. There’s The Bat (Pat Burrell), Hollywood (Cole Hamels), Lights Out (Brad Lidge), Chooch (Carlos Ruiz) and of course, the Flyin’ Hawaiian (Shane Victorino). But not everyone has a nickname, and we need to help.

An off-hand conversation about Chad Durbin brought upon the nickname “Dim the Lights,” which I think is a worthy moniker for the man. That’s why I think we here at the Nation need to do more of the same. This week I’m opening a feature called “Nickname the Phillie,” where you guys can determine the nickname of select Phils.

Here’s a weird one. Ryan Howard. He has a lot of little nicknames, but nothing certain. Let’s see: Ryno, RyHo, Big Brown, UPS, The Big Man, Dave Kingman. Oh wait. Seriously, Ryno is Ryne Sandberg. Can’t use it. RyHo? Let’s be more creative than first-last name nicknames. Big Brown isn’t bad, but smacks of being politically incorrect. UPS is pretty good. I could live with that. The Big Man is Harry Kalas’ entry, and it fits with Chase Utley’s “The Man,” but anyone could be The Big Man. Dmitri Young can be The Big Man. Oh, the Inquirer ran a blog contest to nickname Howard, and the winner was “The Broad Street Bomber.” Ugh. We need a nickname special to our 50-HR, 250-K slugger. Let’s give it to him.

I suggested “Nolan Ryan Howard” since he’s the strikeout king….. but K-How has the subtleness about it that makes it great… I think he needs to start hitting over .250 before we give him a nickname though, cause we’re all going to bash him right now

let me start by saying i like Ryan Howard and he is a big part of the reason we are a contending team the last few years, but. . . .i wonder how “special” he feels to not make the all star team? i mean he asks for arod money, but hasn’t even been in the top 2 or 3 in his position in the NL in the last couple years.

    what am i missing?

I’m not a huge fan of the nicknames that have one letter-abbreviation ex: a-rod j-roll k-rod but i do like k-how over everything else so far.

Please Howard bashers, I’m sure Tim wants a nickname that a majority of fans and Howard himself would appreciate.

Speaking of Howard, while the rest of the team is struggling offensively, he stands out as the hot hitter with a 11 game hitting streak that is good for .318 BA (14 for 44). During that streak, “Giant Power” Howard
blasted 5 HRs and had 13 RBIs.

Here’s another amazing stat for his season; his OPS (on base + slugging)… with RISP is an astounding 1.099 !!!

I hate to think where the Phillies may be in the standings without “Giant Power” Howard. 🙂

my friend and I commonly refer to Howard as, The Big Cat.

    not sure why.

  41. Pythagoras

    July 9, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Stay in Math Class philsphan. Ryan Howard would have to become a slap hitter ala Kenny Lofton to avoid striking out at least 270 times by seasons end.

    “How Now Brown Cow”

  43. Steve

It could be Ryan “The Intern” Howard after the Office character who shares his name (who was actually named after Howard the baseball player while he played for the Scranton/Wikes-Barre Red Barons), or maybe Ryan “Liberty Place III” Howard. I have to say though, Special K is the best nickname so far.

Maybe Ryan “Pedro Cerrano” Howard, given his penchant for killing the ball and striking out. It seems as though Jobu has been on his side lately, leading the NL in both HRs and RBIs

  52. Bloodbath McGrath

Feliz has to be Cerrano. Can’t hit and off speed pitch and his name is actually Pedro. It’s too perfect.

    How about “the Breeze.”

It can be taken two ways. Sometimes he makes it look so easy… and other times… well, he creates one hell of a breeze.

  54. Jeff M

    July 10, 2008 at 1:38 pm

    Ryan “Airshow” Howard

Either he hits it a long way, or there is a lot of air with his swing. What do you think??

  55. Steve

    July 10, 2008 at 4:27 pm

K-How is catchy, but the bashers are going a little overboard. He leads the NL in HR and RBI and continues to raise his avg daily. What more do you want out of your clean-up spot? And if sooooooo many other 1st basemen can out produce him, then why haven’t they? Some Philly fans really suck. And the “He wants A-Rod money” rumor is one of the biggest urban legends out there. The is NO proof, quote, or otherwise out there that can be produce to support that SPECULATION. Stop parroting sports talk radio.
