Nickname The Phillie: Jayson Werth

The Phillies have some fantastic nicknames. There’s The Bat (Pat Burrell), Hollywood (Cole Hamels), Lights Out (Brad Lidge), Chooch (Carlos Ruiz) and of course, the Flyin’ Hawaiian (Shane Victorino). But not everyone has a nickname, and we need to help.

An off-hand conversation about Chad Durbin brought upon the nickname “Dim the Lights,” which I think is a worthy moniker for the man. That’s why I think we here at the Nation need to do more of the same. This week I’m opening a feature called “Nickname the Phillie,” where you guys can determine the nickname of select Phils.

First I’m offering Jayson Werth. His two-run home run with two strikes and two outs in the ninth was one of his biggest Phillie highlights. His three-homer game earlier this season was another. A guy with his substantial power, speed, defensive abilities and patience at the plate deserves a great nickname. Go at it — nickname the Phillie.

I’m glad everyone likes “Dim the lights” Durbin. I’m thinking of making a t-shirt with that on it.

Jason Werth is a tough name for nicknames

    Jason “Big Game” Werth

“Stick” both for his clutch bat, and his physique

  8. Don M

    July 7, 2008 at 3:49 pm

    Or “Speed Stick”

    or “Stick Shift”

  9. Ben

    July 7, 2008 at 3:51 pm

i’ve always just called him “chase utley light”. looks like chase and his ability is just shy of chases, but he’s a gamer like chase.

There’s this thing online where you put someone’s full name in and it spits out a nickname for them. I threw in Jayson Werth and it came up with “Johnny Wacko.” Something tells me thats not gonna stick.

  11. TJ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:16 pm

“On Call” because he’s always on call and whenever called upon he delivers.

  12. CZ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    ‘The Wire’

  13. Gavin

    July 7, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    I like Speed Stick.

How about J-Dub (short for JW)

    Maybe Phenom.

  14. TJ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Or “On Demand” since it kinda ties to comcast and him.

  15. Benjamin

    July 7, 2008 at 4:17 pm

The only thing that stands out about him (other than his abilities) is his cheesy stinger, so I propose “Stinger.”

  16. Gavin

    July 7, 2008 at 4:18 pm

LOL. Johnny Wacko. I have to say I like it.

  17. CZ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:19 pm

‘The Patient’ – considering that he has the lowest first pitch swing percentage in the league and he’s the only guy on this team that looks at pitches

  18. Benjamin

    July 7, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    Johnny Wacko is pretty good.

  19. Gavin

    July 7, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Yea…unless something better comes along….I go with Johnny Wacko.

  20. TJ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:23 pm

I like both “the Patient” and “Johnny Wacko”

  21. Jim Phelan

    July 7, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Someone in the blogosphere mentioned “we’re not Werth-y” in response to a great game he had earlier this year…how about Aerosmith…

  22. PSU Fan

    July 7, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Call him Lincoln…because he’s werth every penny the Phils have spent on him.

  23. CZ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:37 pm

in relation to we’re not Werth-Y – ‘Werth’s World’ or ‘Garth’

  24. Tim Malcolm

    July 7, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Right now I favor The Patient and Speed Stick. Johnny Wacko is great in its absurdity, but his name is Jayson. Just doesn’t make any sense, and a nickname at least needs to make some sense.

  25. NEPA

    July 7, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Haha, agreed Tim. I only posted it to show how ridiculous that nickname site is. I would say I like The Patient as well. Lincoln is pretty good too though.

  26. Gavin

    July 7, 2008 at 4:42 pm

See if you can run some of these by him and find out which one he associates himself with. He might go for Johnny Wacko. 🙂

    Jay Bird

  28. TJ

    July 7, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Jay Bird is sweet. I kinda like that, but it just sounds like a cool name and doesnt associate with baseball at all. Does it?

  31. TJ

    Too cliche

  32. Fran

    July 7, 2008 at 5:01 pm

  37. Fran

    Jay Bird

  38. Paul

But now he is Jason “Worthy” in my eyes.

    Jayson “The anti-Jenkins” Werth

  48. Jason

    July 7, 2008 at 6:37 pm

With his look right now, I would say, the caucasion version of Juan Primo.

  49. JF

    July 7, 2008 at 6:43 pm

This might sound stupid but lightning rod, because hes tall (6-5 and is kinda thin (225 lbs.) and he is explosive on the field. The lightning rod was also invented by Franklin In Philly. Johnny Wacko is funny

  50. Mike T.

    July 7, 2008 at 6:44 pm

    “High net Werth”

  51. Ben

    July 7, 2008 at 6:48 pm

“The Giraffe” – just watch him run down the first base line and then watch a giraffe run

  52. fred

    July 7, 2008 at 6:48 pm

”High net worth” is brilliant, Mike.T

  53. TJ

    July 7, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Come to think of it, I thought that it was Edge because they looked similar and he seemed to give teams that Edge.

  54. Tim Malcolm

    July 7, 2008 at 6:53 pm

High-Net is definitely a Berman nickname. Jay Bird is a nice one, especially as his frame resembles Big Bird.

We got The Patient, Speed Stick, High-Net and Jay Bird as finalists, IMO. We’ll decide on the winner next week, and if another real good one comes out we’ll include it.

  55. Lewisauce

    July 7, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Lightning Rod. Speed Stick. The Craftsman. On Call. On Demand.

They all sound like (gay) porn star names.

The only two I like are Jawa and Johnny Wacko. (But I’m weird.)

  56. Larry

    July 7, 2008 at 8:50 pm

    Jayson “For What Its” Werth

From the movie, the “Natural”, Joe Don Baker played a guy called the “Whammer” That could be applicable.

  57. That Guy

    July 7, 2008 at 8:59 pm

    How about “Vagina Chin”.

  58. Bloodbath McGrath

    July 7, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I love Jayson “For What It’s” Werth, but it really could only be used with his full name. Regardless, that’s my favorite.

  59. That Guy

    July 7, 2008 at 10:50 pm

    How about”shit the bed”

  60. Julie

    July 7, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I’m surprised nothing has been mentioned about his hot mom…

  61. Brian

    July 8, 2008 at 12:27 am

It’d be a lot easier if he sucked, wouldn’t it? I’ve been calling him Weird Beard but Chinny Chin Chin might work too – he’s definitely blown down some houses.

  62. Lewisauce

    July 8, 2008 at 8:28 am

I was trying to come up with something referring to his hot mom, but all those nicknames just sounded gross.

    “The Whammer” is pretty good.

Now that I’m thinking about it, “Hot Mom” isn’t bad either. Sure, he’s not a mom himself, but we’d all know who is being referred to.

“Dorsal Mohawk”. It was worse at the beginning of the year when it went all the way down his next, but he still looks like he belongs in adult entertainment.

  65. Bryers

    July 8, 2008 at 10:57 am

Since he already has a nickname, JDub (the Dub for W), isn’t all this senseless banter!

  66. Don M

    July 8, 2008 at 12:31 pm

So Taguchi = “The Thief” … or … “Crook” for stealing money this year

  67. Justin Evans

    July 8, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Yeah, I was just going to say his nickname has been J-Dub for awhile.

    How about “Werthless Against RHP”?

    I kid, I kid.

  76. werth sucks

    October 6, 2008 at 3:59 pm

tell him to shave his soul patch…if he played at a real ball park, he’d only have 9 hr.

  77. Phil

    October 6, 2008 at 4:07 pm

That’s nice Werth Sucks. I’m sure you’re a Mets fan. Before running your mouth you should look at his home/away splits for homers. 13 away 11 on the road. Werth also crushes the ball and hits opposite field bombs. He has a lot more power than you think. Did you see the 400+ foot blast he hit in game 4? Probably not.

  78. Phil

    October 6, 2008 at 4:08 pm

  83. I'm werthy

    October 27, 2008 at 9:06 pm

    November 2, 2008 at 1:51 pm

I’ve called him Scruffy Puppy all season, esp. on the road when he doesn’t seem to pack a rezor.

I think Jay-bird is a standard nickname for any “J” name. It’s catchy, but not very distinctive.

“Werthington” I like. It’s kind of classy, yet funky.
