Report: Manny Almost A Marlin – Phillies Nation

Report: Manny Almost A Marlin

It’s been reported multiple times already, but I’ll bring it here: The Marlins are dangerously close to acquiring Manny Ramirez.

The deal would send Jeremy Hermida, two Marlins prospects and a Red Sox prospect to the Pirates. The Buccos would then send Jason Bay and John Grabow to the Red Sox. The Sox would send Ramirez, cash and a prospect to the Fish.

Potentially the Marlins lineup would feature Hanley Ramirez at the top, Manny Ramirez cleanup and Dan Uggla and Mike Jacobs on the both sides of him. Throw in Jorge Cantu and Josh Willingham and you got a very strong order capable of beating a lot of teams. Yes, Virginia, the Marlins are for real, they ain’t going away and they know it.

For the Fish it’s a pretty good move, but I really like what the Sox are getting from this — they’ll get Grabow to help their already good bullpen, plus Bay, one of the game’s best outfielders. Considering they’d be getting that for Manny (and two prospects), they’re making out. Still, the Phils will be fighting with the Fish until the end, and it’ll be tough with Manny leading these guys night in and out. He’s a good fit for that club.

manny will kill us if he goes to florida…..lets hope boston realizes they need him too much to make a run at the world series…..jason bay is a great ballplayer but when it comes down to it in sept or oct who do you want hitting? manny or bay? to quote victorino, “Oh, no questions asked.” they yanks are coming on strong too….

Thanks Tyler, I saw that too. While Gammons said it’s not likely, the trade has reportedly been filed with MLB. Teams have been able to pull these things off before.

Damn, Phils in first place. Hopefully you guys lose tomorrow to get a tie in the East.

Hopefully the M’s will lower their asking price for Ibanez because the Mets need an outfielder.

10:33pm: The Palm Beach Post says a tentative agreement has been reached, despite Gammons’ comments. Here’s the deal:

The Marlins will get Ramirez for Hermida, right-hander Ryan Tucker and two other prospects, with those four players being flipped to Pittsburgh for outfielder Jason Bay and left-hander John Grabow.

The Red Sox will send the Marlins enough cash to cover the remainder of Ramirez contract, as well as an unnamed prospect.

Pittsburgh gets Hermida and two prospects – two from Florida and one from Boston. One of the Marlins’ prospects is believed to be Tucker.

Manny wouldnt just come here and win the WS for us. Our SP suck.

  8. Phil

    July 30, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Our SP isn’t THAT bad…seriously. Who’s been losing us games the past 6 weeks? The SP or the offense?

I can’t believe 31 people say Amaro Jr. should be our next GM. Too many people smoke crack on this site.

thats quite impressive since theyve already filed the paperwork with the league to send him to florida

    July 30, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Geoff, just because they filed the paper work doesn’t mean the deal is done.

For the sake of the NL East, keep him in Boston…

Why would the Phillies get involved with that unless Burrell is going to the Sox? They want Bay.

i wanted bay and grabow, thats why im pissed

The rumored trade was reported of Fox 5 NY tonite, and they had remarks already from Manny…..Oh yeah….Florida? No Taxes.Regardless Manny has the greatest and most feared bat in baseball…..and yet he still shows the lack of class of a person that he is,AND I am glad the Mets did NOT get him nor the Phillies.Greatest part of this potential trade is,both Mets and Phillies fans can never be accused as being hypocrites on our views on “Manny being Manny” hating him one day, than kissing his feet the next.

  16. Phil

    July 31, 2008 at 12:12 am

Marlins don’t have any fans to kiss his feet.

Phil and I are taking up arms against the 31 fools who voted for Ruben to be our next GM? Must be a great party ya’ll at.

  18. Phil

    July 31, 2008 at 12:16 am

If Amaro becomes our next GM I’m becoming a Giants fan for real. I know I said that the other day, but this time I’m for real. Rowand and Lincecum are 2 of my favorite players anyway. Mine as well. They play with heart, and their front office doesn’t suck as bad as the Phillies. They at least let Bonds go.

  19. Phil

    July 31, 2008 at 12:17 am

Step up and admit it bitches. Who voted for Amaro? Crack must be an awesome drug!

  20. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 12:20 am

don m and bruce voted repeatedly for amaro, guaranteed.

  21. Phil

    July 31, 2008 at 12:21 am

hahaha probably. We love Gillick, we want his bitch to take over. Gillick is bad enough, lets go for worse.

  22. Phil

    July 31, 2008 at 12:22 am

Some of the shit the people say on this board is so absurd. Someone just said Burrell is a gold glove candidate. This site is good for a laugh when you’re drunk on a Wednesday night.

  23. that guy

Gillick is asleep at the wheel after filling his tummy with John McCain at the Early Bird Special at Old Country Buffet.

    July 31, 2008 at 4:13 am

Everyone please. What does Florida do with players who are looking for a big contract?
Let alone get someone to sign who already has a monster contract. Marlins will not pick up Manny – no reason to be concerned.

  25. Fran

    July 31, 2008 at 7:22 am

I am praying this dosnt happen. But Gillick is not asleep here. Do we really want Manny when what we really need is a Big time pitcher?

  26. MA Phanatic

    July 31, 2008 at 7:25 am

I want Cashman…let’s hope he becomes a free agent. If he’s not available, I’d settle for Amaro, because honestly, I don’t know who else is out there.

Also, Manny to the Fish KILLS the Phils. I don’t want him on our team, but I don’t want him anywhere near the NL East either. 9 games left against the Marlins, 6 of them at CBP. Hitters paradise. Should be interesting. 4:00pm can’t come soon enough.

Being in Boston gets me slammed with Sox coverage, and everyone is clamoring to get him out of Boston they are so sick of him it’s ridiculous. I have a bad feeling this gets done.

  27. Mike T.

    July 31, 2008 at 8:18 am

Manny on the Marlins does not “kill the Phils” by any means, whatsoever. The Marlins don’t have the pitching to contend. They already hit so many homeruns all over the place – adding Manny will not make their pitching better. Dont worry about it.

  28. Mike T.

    July 31, 2008 at 8:18 am

White Sox get Griffey? Where did that come from?

  29. nutty professor

    July 31, 2008 at 8:45 am

the marlins don’t have the pitching to contend, but somehow the Phillies do? aside from hamels, who is not invincible either, i’d take anyone on the marlins staff over the phillies. nolasco, olsen, johnson, and the returning anibal sanchez. you’d rather joe blanton, or kyle kendrick. puh-lease.

  30. Mike T.

    July 31, 2008 at 8:49 am

Nutty professor: If you’ve ever read any of my comments, you wouldn’t have wasted your time telling me that. duh-ouche.

  31. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 8:51 am

im more upset that grabow and bay went to the red sox because i left the phillies could have had one of those guys. again, gillick does nothing. im getting tired of repeating that. he has 6 hours to make three moves. starter, reliever, everyday RF. im waiting….

  32. nutty professor

    July 31, 2008 at 8:53 am

so then why do you say “The Marlins don’t have the pitching to contend”? How about instead of hurling insults you engage in intelligent conversation.

  33. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 8:55 am

we already knwo the phillies dont have the pitching to contend FOR A WS. were so far beyond that now.

  34. Gavin

    July 31, 2008 at 8:55 am

I think this should force Gillicks hand to land Manny. He’s the type of guy that will be out to prove to BOS that he is better w/o them. He’s going to kill baseballs down the stretch if he gets traded to the Fish.

Originally I dont like getting Manny, but if he goes to Mets or Marlins, I think you have to take a serious look at trying to steal him away.

  35. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 8:58 am

But they already failed, hes not coming. You had to get bay but hes gone too. now you need to revisit the hollday talks IF the rocks are selling. offer them carlos carrasco, antonio bastardo, jason donald,- and greg golson for matt holliday alone.

  36. Mike T.

    July 31, 2008 at 8:59 am

Did I say the Phils have pitching to contend? No. I’ve been saying it all year, the Philliess need another 1 or 2 starters to be serious contenders. Now, the NL East is rather even. When you put the Phillies against the Marlins and Mets, it’s a pretty close race. If someone in this division acquires another big time starter, that’s where the advantage is. The Mets decent pitching, but lack offense. The Marlins and Phils have shit pitching, but can hit — division, still even. So we go back to your statement, “Manny to the Fish KILLS the Phils.” Manny to the fish does not kill the phillies. They need pitching to improve. We need pitching to improve. Nothing changes. Ok?

  37. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 8:59 am

you want to win now? then nobodys safe for the right player. yuou want roy halladay? jimmy rollins, carlos carrasco.

you want ron mahay? jason donald and another prospect

you want raul ibanez? who knows, a lot

goerge sherrill? who knows, a lot

  38. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 9:00 am

i know you have mike, im trying to tell the guy hes trying to talk about something we figured out months ago

  39. Mike T.

    July 31, 2008 at 9:02 am

Sorry, that’s in response to nutty professor.

  40. nutty professor

    July 31, 2008 at 9:03 am

that didn’t hurt, now did it mike? i agree, the division is very even up, but i think as of right now the marlins have the edge in pitching over the phils. just my opinion. i actually think if no moves are made amongst the phils, mets, and marlins, that florida will come out on top. call me crazy.

  41. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 9:04 am

manny to the fish improves the fish a little but not significantly. if the phillies dont make som esplash, a really big one, out of nowehere, then they have no better a chance to win the division than the mets or marlins, just like before the whole manny thing. i agree with that completely.

  42. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 9:06 am

they probably will come out on top. the phillies and mets are old. too much old, overpaid JUNK on those two rosters, especially the mets bullpen. the marlins have energy. lack of experience? they had the same team in 2003 and those guys proved to be just fine.

  43. Mike T.

    July 31, 2008 at 9:11 am

the phils and mets definitely have a TON of overpaid junk.

  44. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 9:14 am

exactly. people dont understand that. you need veterans, but by veterans i dont mean old overpaid junk. it festers and attracts other old overpaid junk and eats money and space on the roster. before you know it, the team finishes in last place and you have to rebuilld. you can never have more than one or two of those guys on your whole team at a given time. the phillies have like 10, the mets have like 15.

  45. Geoff

    July 31, 2008 at 9:16 am

interstingly enough, the mets are doing the same as the phillies are doing: trying to get good players/pitchers while still holding onto their “top prospects”

guess what? you want good talent? youre not getting it without giving up top prospects. you want raul ibanez minaya? john niese or fernando martinez are in the deal. you want holliday or halladay gillick? carlos carrasco has to be involved

  46. Jamie

    July 31, 2008 at 11:39 am

Geoff, you say you’re tired of saying it, and quite frankly (although I agree with you sometimes), I am tired of hearing you say it too.

“I can go through that list and I’m trying to think,” Manuel said. “Manny Ramirez would be the hitter, I’ll admit that. He’d definitely be the hitter. But then if we are going to find some other kind of hitter, if we’ve already got guys like that, there’s no sense in us just going out there and getting somebody” just to get somebody.
