Jamie Moyer, This Is Your Life

Tonight is Jamie Moyer’s first career World Series start, and for all purposes, the absolute most important start of his 22-year career.

Sure, hyperbole is in order here, and if the series goes to seven games, that final game will likely be the most important start of his career, long as he starts it. But here and now, this is the moment for which Moyer has waited his entire career:

“It’s something that I’ve been dreaming about my whole life.”

Let’s be real here: This is the guy who, as a 17-year-old, attended the only parade down Broad Street for the Phillies. He’s the local boy, the hoagie lover, the beer drinker, the skinny map-faced grizzler. If anyone should be starting the first game of the series in Philly, it’s Moyer. Despite his poor pitching to start his postseason, he’s earned this. And I believe very truly that he’ll pitch his best baseball tonight. When you mention “destiny,” this is what you mean — not some 11-year-old franchise that only became good this season, but a player whose career is twice as long and whose dreams are much more storybook.

Tonight, Moyer meets destiny.
