Not that I want to jump the gun, but I was given a recommendation by our own Julie Michael, and it’s fitting. Let’s go with Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. Yes, celebrate. Celebrate because tonight may very well be the greatest night in Phillies franchise history. Here we are, everyone, at the climax of an incredible season. Time to do it. Time to win. Just win.

Delicious beer, perfect for the occasion. Anyone notice the big change in Madden’s lineup?

Kind of interesting that Crawford moved up to 2nd, and Baldelli is in there.

Right on, Tim. Time to celebrate tonight. Celebrate how good it feels to be in the World Series, how amazing it is for our city, how nice it is for Phillies fans to unite over something positive rather than negative, and the special bond this experience has created in our worldwide Phillies family. Beer before and during the game hopefully followed by champagne after. Go Phils!

A World Series Game Four Moment — My daughter and I sat behind home plate in Section 420 row 8. The game was made more special by the presence of about thirty-five Tampa Bay fans five rows in the rear. The kidding and jawing going back and forth during the game was great. Lines of worry rolled over the Ray fan’s faces in the fourth after Howard’s home run. Four innings later their depressed faces continue to droop with Werth & Howard home runs. My daughter and I stayed seated after most fans had left discussing what had transpired. Magic moments like the dance Jimmy did on the third base line to avoid the correct call. How the umpires had occupied a part of the Phillies post season limelight. How both Jimmy and Ryan are in sync. How our pitchers are leading the post season in hitting or it seems so. How calm the dugout looked in the late innings. How my daughter felt in 1993. We compared Ryan to Babe Ruth’s hitting. She compared Cole Hamels to post season greats Josh Beckett, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and Greg Maddux. (Her second favorite team is Atlanta.) I tuned in with Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Whitey Ford, and Jim Palmer. The aroma of the World Series victory hung in the air. And we became intoxicated as we drank our fill last night. On our way out, we were surprise to still see the Tamp Bay fans seated, but they probably wanted to keep a low profile before going into the night. I turned towards them and put my hands and fingers in the air displaying a 3-1 World Series Phillies lead. A well dressed Tampa Bay Ray female southern woman stood up, shook her finger, and responded with a serious face saying “That’s not nice, that’s just not nice!” Her polite banter made us both look at each other, smile and laugh, knowing our team was on the winning side of her comment.

    REMINISCING ON PAT BURRELL’S CAREER

The hype started well before June 2, 1998. On that date, the Phillies held the first overall selection in the 1998 Amateur Draft, and with it, drafted University of Miami first baseman Patrick Brian Burrell III. It was no secret. The 6’4″ Burrell was the most coveted player in the draft in 1998, after a stunning career at Miami. He was previously selected by Boston in the 43rd round of the 1995 draft, but elected to go to college instead.

Other first round notables from the 1998 draft included Mark Mulder (A’s –2nd overall), Corey Patterson (Cubs – 3rd overall), J.D. Drew (Cardinals –5th overall), Austin Kearns (Reds – 7th overall), Carlos Pena (Rangers –10th overall), Brad Lidge (Astros – 17th overall), and some guy named C.C.Sabbathia (Indians – 20th overall). Some good picks, others not so good. The Royals took pitcher Jeff Austin at 4th, and the Twins took pitcher Ryan Mills 6th. The list goes on from there as you may suspect.

When the Phillies selected Burrell, they had high hopes. Who wouldn’t? In three seasons at Miami, he hit .442 with 61 home runs, 187 RBI’s, and had a slugging percentage of .888 – good for second best in NCAA history. He was assigned to the minors, and rocketed from Class A Clearwater (37 games in 1998) to AAA Scranton by the end of his first full season (117 games for AA Reading in 1999, and 10 games at AAA Scranton). He began 2000 at AAA Scranton, where he
    remained for only 40 games. The end result: 204 minor league games, 725 AB’s, 148 runs, 226 hits, 50 doubles, 8 triples, 40 home runs, 149 RBI’s, and a .312 batting average.

He made his major league debut on May 24, 2000, at the ripe old age of 23. In his first game, he singled off of Octavio Dotel, and later tripled. He went 2-5 with 2 RBI’s and never looked back, hitting .260 with 18 home runs and 79 RBI, finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year balloting. The next year, he made the move from 1st Base to left field. He responded with another solid season, hitting .258 with 27 homers and 89 RBI. Phillies fans had fallen in love with Burrell, and he hit a career-best .282 in 2002, with 37 homers and 116 RBI. That off-season, the Phillies rewarded him with a six year, $50 million contract extension.

Phillies fans expected big things from the slugger, however, Burrell struggled in 2003 and most of 2004. His struggles caused some to question his toughness, work ethic, dedication, and skills. He rebounded in 2005, hitting .281 with 32 homers and 117 RBI. Pat was back. Over 2006, 2007, and 2008, Burrell continued hitting home runs and driving them in (29/95, 30/97, and 33/86). However, his average “slipped” to .258, .256, and .250 during that time. Rumors began circulating that the Phillies were shopping their big left fielder, but nothing ever happened. Burrell reportedly vetoed a trade to
Baltimore in 2006, but very little has been publicly spoken about it.

Philly fans wanted Burrell to hit .282 every year while driving in 120 and
hitting 30+ home runs. That may be unrealistic, however, as stats show Burrell is largely a .250-.260 hitter. Over the years, he has become better at pitch selection, and as a result, his on base percentage has remained near .400 over the past few years. He is patient at the plate when he’s at his best, and has fewer RBI chances hitting in the 5 hole, which can account for his lower RBI numbers. His power numbers have remained consistent over the past few
years, and a strong 2008 showed he’s not done yet.

Over nine seasons in Philadelphia, Burrell has given us these numbers: 1306 games / 655 runs / 253 doubles / 14 triples / 251 home runs / 827 RBI’s / .257 average. Those numbers are not shabby at all – many players never reach those numbers over an entire career, let alone nine seasons. He’s only 32, and still has a few years of baseball left in him. The question remains on whether the Phillies will offer him a respectable contract, or let him walk away. I urge the front office to get a deal done. Burrell has always been a Phillie, and should be one for several more years.

In March of 2006, I spoke to Pat during several spring training games that I attended. All he wanted to do is win, he said. It wasn’t about him, his stats, or any awards. Like many ball players, he just wanted to win. Watching the NLDS, NLCS, and four games of the World Series, this fact is obvious. He’s like a giddy little kid in the dugout after big hits. He gives it his all out on the field, although he isn’t the fleetest of foot. He wants to win.

If Hamels brings it home tonight, I will cry tears of joy for the city, the
ballclub, the fans, Shane Victorino’s grandmother, and Charlie Manuel’s
mother. However, I will cry the biggest tears for Pat Burrell and Jimmy
Rollins, who have endured painful years with this team during its rebuilding phases. Burrell wants to win more than anything else, and he has wanted to give this city a World Series title since the day he signed. Tonight may be the night, and although he’s struggling in the postseason, the team could not have gotten here without him.

And so we go into tonight’s Game 5 with the possibility this will be the last time we see Burrell in red pinstripes. As strange as that may seem, it is a reality. There will likely be a lot of emotion from him, his fellow players, and the fans. Perhaps we’ve put too much on his shoulders over the years, and expected too much. Perhaps he’s got several more great years left before he hangs it up. Either way, Pat Burrell deserves a World Series ring emblazoned with a Philadelphia Phillies logo on it. And if this is it for “Pat the Bat,” then I leave him with these words: Thank you, and Godspeed.

Figures, with just one more win needed for a world championship team in Philly, the front page of Yahoo Sports has an article about how brutish we Philly fans are. Here’s the standard copy he basically cut and pasted from any other “Philly fans are bad” article:

“Nobody is safe in front of Philadelphia sports fans. The tradition of booing and heckling at ballparks in the City of Brotherly Love was personified in that spontaneous expression of displeasure over Prohibition, and years later when they booed Santa Claus and pelted J.D. Drew with batteries and, this season, needled Phillies shortstop and reigning MVP Jimmy Rollins for daring to suggest the fans are “frontrunners.”

There he goes with the boo santa claus thing again…

Scott “The Stud Go-To Guy” Kazmir: 29 Pitches
    Hamels: 7 Pitches

Advantage Phils. Are they going to have David “The Messiah” Price pitch the other 8? Christ, the guy may be a good prospect, but let him spend some time in the big leagues before starting his Hall of Fame bust.

Ah — well all the haters find their excuses to make themselves feel better about their team not winning, we’ll enjoy it. Because we know that the Phillies are the best team in ALL OF BASEBALL in ’08. Suck it up and take it. Geez.

  131. Jamie

    October 27, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Bill, it’s hard to compare teams this far apart. The game 28 years ago was VERY different than it is today. The 2008 team is better than the 2007 team, which is better than the 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 teams. That’s about it. I don’t even want to compare then to the ’93 team. That team was a great bunch of misfits who did what nobody ever thought they would do. They fell short. But to compare them…I don’t do that. You can go ahead all you want, but don’t shortchange the 2008 team for what they have done. At this point, and the way it looks, they will be the best team of 2008. And that’s all that matters!

  132. Michael S

    October 27, 2008 at 9:15 pm

To Bill- Why don’t you tell the Mets not to offer a contract extension to an undeserving manager…Then tell me who won the division the last two years…Keep saying the Phils aren’t good, it still won’t put the Mets into the playoffs.

Don’t get complacent Phillies, we need more…

  151. Jamie

Pena’s ball was hit well, but Longoria’s was just a routine grounder just out of J-Roll’s range. Not like he killed it or anything. Cole will be okay, we just need to create a few more runs for insurance. After all, when they bring Price in, we won’t get a hit off of him, because he’s unhittable, remember? Joe Buck said so.

  233. Jamie

    October 27, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Nicely done, Pat! On base 2 of his 3 at bats. I’ll take it…I like Victorino up in this spot. Does he bunt them over? I’d try to bunt down the line and see if he can get an infield single. If he can’t, then oh well…it moves the runners over. If he does, bases loaded and no outs.

  234. Georgie

    October 27, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Well it does feel like the momentum has shifted Tampa Bay’s way. But that’s ok. By the time they play this game again it will have subsided. 🙂

Well, at least Selig confirmed the game will be held in Philadelphia irregardless of whether they have to wait until Thanksgiving or not – it will not be moved to Tampa to finish. THANK GOD!

So are we thinking there’s zero chance this game starts back up tonight? Like they won’t randomly start it back up at like 2 AM right?

  388. NEPA

    October 27, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Nevermind, just saw that they suspended it.

I have this sinking feeling this will kill us……..

I feel like we lost even though technically we have the upper hand (4 innings for us, 3 for the Rays). But I just feel like the world is conspiring against us. Hamels will probably be done for the rest of the game; we got 6 innings from him when we were all expecting more.

That being said, I think MLB had to do this. The game was getting too sloppy and we were not playing well under those circumstances. This sucks so much. I didn’t even finish my beer.

Bud Selig just admited he broke the rules instead of following the rule book. Cause there is not special rules for the World Series.

    Pure BULL.

    October 27, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Look, I don’t want to win this game by the game being called….

I just think they waited too long to delay the game to begin with. They saw the radar.

This game should have started an hour or two earlier.

Selig says that when it does restart, it will be at a regular game time – 8:35 p.m. Eastern, not in the middle of the day. He explained that he wanted to give fans plenty of warning, and wanted to hold it at a normal time. If it doesn’t go tomorrow night (which it doesn’t sound like will happen), it will likely be Wednesday night. I guess the bright spot is even if we lose Game 5 and Game 6, Hamels could pitch Game 7 on Friday night on short rest if he had to. Of course, we don’t want that to happen.

    Is Selig senile?

  396. NEPA

    October 27, 2008 at 11:26 pm

So wait, now that the game is suspended. Is MLB saying that if the Rays hadn’t tied the game up then they still would have suspended the game this quickly and the Phillies would be World Champions right now? Or would they have waited basically all night to call the game?

    October 27, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I actually feel sick. Kazmir tanked it and the Phils had it set-up for Cole to go deep but Selig has prioritized the Rays fantasy story and tomorrow’s been handed to them on a silver platter with a big eat up sign.

Again, as I stated earlier, if it were the Phillies we would have wanted the same treatment. I think it would be bush-league to win the world series due to rain in the 6th

Way too much drama. The game went way too long. If I were a Rays fan I would be pissed if the game got called early

  403. Manny

    October 27, 2008 at 11:29 pm

I feel the exact same thing, SJ Mike. This feels like this will bring our team down and give the Rays hope, especially since Hamels is out of the equation.

  404. Jamie

    October 27, 2008 at 11:29 pm

I agree that I would rather end the series normally (i.e. 9 inning game – or 8 1/2, that is), but I also believe Selig’s “I would have continued it anyways” is horseshit. If the Rays were ahead, I wonder if he would have done the same. Joe Buck was sure excited at the prospect of taking the series back down to Florida and their 17,000 fans.

  405. Kruk is the Best-93

    October 27, 2008 at 11:32 pm

I guess Hamels is the only pitcher in the rotation that can win… this would have been suspended regardless of the teams. The umps and Selig let it go too long and then it was too late to call it when the Rays had a man in scoring position. The Phillies are not liked by the media. I was just watching local coverage and they were saying that fans were dumping beers on 9 year olds who were wearing Rays gear.

  406. SJ Mike

    October 27, 2008 at 11:33 pm

This was such freakin’ ridiculous. They should have reverted back to the top of the 6th. Mitch Williams said it best.

  407. Phils2008

    October 27, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I can’t believe it. I think MLB is trying to get this to game 6 for ratings an advertising dollars!

  408. Brian

    October 27, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Why does their pitching staff get to start the bottom of the 6th on a dry field. Game should have been stopped before the top of the 6th. Play on tomorrow from that point.

This far worse than the all star disaster. Selig is a jackass. this might be the most pissed off I’ve ever been

  409. Kruk is the Best-93

    October 27, 2008 at 11:35 pm

Mitch Williams just wants the attention taken off the 93 bomb to Joe Carter.

  410. Jamie

    October 27, 2008 at 11:36 pm

NEPA, Selig said that even though the rule book said the game could be called after it was official (when the Phils lead), he would not have allowed it to be officially called. He would have suspended it anyways, irregardless of the rule book, just so the series didn’t end on a rain-shortened game. I understand what he means, but if it’s in the rule book another way, then change the Goddamned rule book. Don’t make shit up on the fly – especially in the World Series for Christsakes.

  411. Kruk is the Best-93

    October 27, 2008 at 11:41 pm

WTF really… lets just take the title. This may go down as the worst officiated WS of all time. This will look like a joke whoever wins.

  412. Jamie

    October 27, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Kruk, shut the fu*k up with your nonsensical bullshit. You’re trying to start fights in here – plain and simple. Hamels the only starter that can win? Yeah, see the way Moyer and Blanton pitched, you idiot. Man, I hate trolls. You’re no Phillies fan, and if you claim you are, you’re the kind I hate.

wonder if the 9-year old Rays fans were the same little kids that were yelling FCK the Phillies at my friends down in Tampa??

That happends everywhere.. people need to get over stuff like that.. somebody threw a smokebomb into the NJ Devils bench in OT of the Flyers game the other night… there are a$$holes everywhere, but we have the spotlight on us
