October All Over Again In Clearwater

UPDATE (12:31 p.m.): Jayson Werth is a scratch because he tweaked his shoulder, according to Todd Zolecki. John Mayberry Jr. will take his place. Werth still hasn’t played a moment in the Grapefruit League.

***

rays97.gifTwo familiar faces reunite at Bright House Networks Field today.

It’s the first of seven meetings between the Phillies and Rays, the two teams who vied for the world championship last season. This season the Rays have a new weapon — one Phillies fans know extremely well. Pat Burrell will make a start at designated hitter today. The Rays will start Mitch Talbot. Meanwhile, the Phillies will start Kyle Kendrick, who is part of the Fight For Fifth. Drew Naylor, Clay Condrey, Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge alre also scheduled to pitch. For Naylor it’s a tune up for the World Baseball Classic. For the rest? Getting work in.

Your lineup: Rollins (SS) / Victorino (CF) / Ibanez (LF) / Howard (1B) / Mayberry (RF) / Dobbs (DH) / Cairo (2B) / Donald (3B) / Paulino (C).

You can watch this one on Comcast SportsNet and MLB Network.

yet another start for Jason Donald… Dobbs getting a ton of playing time too in the early going. I’m excited to watch these guys on the tube in a little!

Very interested to see how Kendrick responds after Carrasco and Happ pitched Thursday.

I still have no MLB Network and no way to watch Spring Training Games.
Gentlemen and the Mets fan, I am beside myself in abject consternation. This is most disconcerting how Dish Network mistreats all of the Phillies fans who happen to live in TN near Knoxville.

    Tim,

According to the Zo Zone Werth is a late scratch. He tweaked his shoulder.

Damn, great game to miss today. I’ll be at the UConn/ND game, taking back the top spot. Good luck to Burrell.

Oh wow, I think MLBNetwork is showing a CSN feed! I think it’s on CSN in Philly.

  11. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Watching Pat the Bat walk wearing his new Rays jersey makes me very sad.

  12. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 12:58 pm

yeah its also on CSN. I’ve been waiting for this all week!

  13. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Ouch, Miguel Cairo just messed up big time

  14. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:10 pm

Pat looked good in blue. Kyle’s change up seemed to improve. Good hustle by Jimmy.

  15. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Nice hit by Shane! Brings in Jimmy… 1-0 Phils

  16. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Boy, a perfect 1-2 there to start the game.

  17. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:13 pm

Ibanez has good mechanics. Great batting stance and a good swing.

  18. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Yea, Phil… I was about to say the same thing. He looks very solid at the plate.

  19. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Hey! The bats are in town!

  20. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Do that all regular season and earn your money.

  21. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm

    Opposite field homer by HOWARD!

  22. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 1:15 pm

I had a feeling we were gonna get out to a hot start. A righty pitcher vs all our lefties. I think it might be like this alll season long

  23. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 1:15 pm

    Johnny Mayberry! Hey!

  24. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Home run Mayberry! Holy shit this game is awesome! Makes me very optimistic!

  25. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Mayberry doin work. He’s gonna be good by next year

  26. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I’m twittering this game: twitter.com/philliesnation if anyone wants quick comments.

  27. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    Home run Cairo!.

    Ok that pitcher sucks.

  28. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    that was a BOMB

  29. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:18 pm

I think Mayberry is going to be our RH bat off the bench. That kid has potential.

  30. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:20 pm

When Cairo connected it had that Bo Jackson crack/pop sound to it.

  31. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:20 pm

If he keeps it up throughout Spring, then I wouldn’t be surprised, Phil.

  32. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:21 pm

WHAT A CATCH! EARN YOUR SPOT!

  33. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:21 pm

    What a play by Donald!

  34. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 1:22 pm

    hell of a catch

  35. Chutley

    February 28, 2009 at 1:23 pm

hahah dont think the dive was needed

  36. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:23 pm

I give my condolences to Sarge’s mom.

  37. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 1:23 pm

    thats not good

  38. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:23 pm

    Keep the ball down, Kendrick…

  39. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:24 pm

That was a poor pitch by Kendrick….

  40. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:24 pm

So far the 5th starter spot is shaping up like this(I know it’s too early to tell)

    Carrasco>Happ>Kendrick

  41. Fran

    February 28, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Yeah that’s a shame to hear about Sarges mom.

  42. christopher

    February 28, 2009 at 1:25 pm

i’ve missed this way too much. can’t wait to see what naylor can do, especially on a day with dangerous wind like this. i’ve been optimistic about him based on scouting reports.

  43. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:29 pm

    Phil, I would say

    Happ=Carrasco>Kendrick

I’m so excited watching the Phils again !

  44. Sarah

    February 28, 2009 at 1:30 pm

    SWEET SWEET SWEET start!

  45. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:31 pm

Carrasco>Happ because Carrasco had 2 more strike outs.

  46. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 1:32 pm

I’m glad Donald, Mayberry, and company have been getting at bats. When Ruiz goes to the WBC, I’m excited to see what Marson can do. It’ll be a good catchers competition.

  47. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:34 pm

Cairo’s fielding makes me miss Utley

  48. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:35 pm

    I agree with you Manny.

  49. Phan in TN

    February 28, 2009 at 1:36 pm

i hate that i can’t watch this fricken game.

  50. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 1:36 pm

I don’t see Cairo making the opening day roster anyway.

  51. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:40 pm

    Hmmm Kendrick is kinda shaky

  52. Phil

    February 28, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Kendrick looked like Kendrick with a slightly improved change up. I still don’t forsee him making the 5th starter spot. If he has a good spring he’ll be trade fodder.

  53. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 1:41 pm

That’s a usual Kendrick kind of start though. That’s the problem though with him being a contact pitcher.

  54. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Seriously, that Cairo play…. it is a pretty hard play to make but Utley makes it look so easy. Best defensive 2B in the big leagues by far.

  55. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Manny, it was a tough play, indeed. I just think that with the mixture of Bruntlett being a shoe-in for the utility and how high everyone is on Donald making the roster, it would get crowded for backup infielders.

  56. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Re: the 5th starter…. This is Happ’s job to lose.

  57. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Gotta see Howard hit more opposite field rollers like that. Move that shift over.

  58. christopher

    February 28, 2009 at 1:51 pm

look at flyin ryan bustin it down the line! slim and trim and ready to go!

typical kendrick start, not great, not bad, just kendrick. naylor looked good with his first batter.

  59. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:53 pm

I don’t know why they’re saying this was a good start for Kendrick. Right now, you gotta compare everything he does with Happ’s and Carrasco’s outings… and those two didn’t allow any runs (though they pitched .2 innings less than K).

Btw, a 20-pounds-heavier Howard would’ve been called out on that play.

  60. ryan

    February 28, 2009 at 1:55 pm

i’m feeling that howard, barring any major injuries, will have his best year yet this year. i’m thinking 60+ HR’s and 150 steaks.

  61. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:58 pm

    Good man, Naylor.

  62. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Naylor has some nasty stuff. Nice changeup. Works outside. BEAUTIFUL curve.

  63. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Think Naylor getting a pen spot?

  64. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 1:59 pm

I’ll be rooting for the guy when he pitches for Australia in the WBC. Pretty interesting pitcher. He looked confident, too.

  65. christopher

    February 28, 2009 at 2:02 pm

i’d be surprised if naylor made the pen but my long shot hope is the rotation in 2011 is hamels / myers / blanton / carrasco / naylor. i’ve been high on this kid for a little while. hope the aussie gets another inning or two.

  66. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 2:04 pm

Most astute observation so far-Pat Burrell=best butt in baseball, hands down! Damn, I’ll miss that LF view!

  67. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 2:04 pm

SJ: I answered it on twitter. No, Naylor won’t make the pen.

  68. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 2:07 pm

I’m far behind on the whole Twitter stuff. Twitter never made much sense to me. I don’t know much about Naylor, but if he’s young, then I’m assuming he’s someone to be looking at come 2010, 2011

  69. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:07 pm

Good to see Donald getting a hit, finally.

  70. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Is he related to Real Cormier?

  71. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Naylor would only make it to the pen if he pitches against the US in the WBC and strikes out the #3-4-5 batters.

  72. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:09 pm

    … in a row.

  73. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:11 pm

    Time for Ibañez to shine.

  74. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:12 pm

    OR NOT

  75. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 2:12 pm

I never really get to learn about the young minor league players until I see a couple televised games during Spring Training outside of the ones you hear about the most (Donald, Carrasco, etc.).

I suspect by time the annual Green Jersey St. Patty’s Day game comes, I’ll be more familiar with them.

  76. NJ

    February 28, 2009 at 2:15 pm

Gotta think Mayberry’s making a hell of a case to make it up to Philly…

  77. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 2:17 pm

OT, but the rumors are true, Dawkins traded, I am done with the Eagles.

  78. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 2:18 pm

Georgie, isn’t it funny how the Phils have somewhat become the class of the city when it comes to taking care of the players and fan favorites considering the debacles during the Ed Wade era?

  79. NJ

    February 28, 2009 at 2:22 pm

The Iggs didn’t trade Dawk, he signed in Denver which must mean the Eagles weren’t prepared to go to that 2nd year.

Gotta love the pitching, the guys vying for spots on the staff have really shown up from the get-go.

  80. SJ Mike

    February 28, 2009 at 2:24 pm

The Broncos threw 5 years, $17million at Dawk, but it’s near $7million guaranteed right away.

Dawkins is one of those athletes that epitomized what we loved in Philly, much like Chase Utley. Hard nosed “give it all you got every time” player.

The Phillies have always been number 1 in my heart, but the World Series win and the Eagles front office the past few seasons have made me distance myself from the Birds more and more each day.

  81. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:24 pm

    That guy got Nayled.

  82. NJ

    February 28, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Gonna see a very different Iggles team this year, the cupboards bare at safety.

Maybe Eaton could suit up for the Phils, at least we’d get to see that shmuck get nailed.

  83. Manny

    February 28, 2009 at 2:45 pm

    Who just homered?

  84. Tim Malcolm

    February 28, 2009 at 2:46 pm

    Paulino.

  85. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Ronny Paulino just crushed one. Kendrick 4 hits in 2.2 innings. one run allowed but still too many baserunners. Mayberry another RBI (hes looking better out there)

  86. NJ

    February 28, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Right not from the first few games you look at Majewski, Borowski, Koplove along with Carrasco, Happ and then Mayberry, Ozuna and Cairo and it’s been a great start for the guys who could fill out the roster. No-one realistically in with a shot at a spot has started terribly.

  87. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Whew, needed a little break, just one more thing and then I’ll let it go-The Eagles are something like $41M under the cap, and they’re cleaning house, it looks like. D goes too???

  88. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Oh, and the Jimmy/Vic show was pretty funny.

  89. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Eyre looked allright shaking off the rust a bit. Koplove had a nice inning. Mayberry will make this roster I think. Hell be that right handed bat theyve been looking for with another long ball today. mayberry can be a guy who can evolve into a 4th outfielder making stairs the odd man out and eventually taking over for jenkins in the 4th spot if he continues to improve. drew naylor hasnt done a bad job today either.

  90. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 3:02 pm

Yeah maybe tra thomas will be resigned…but dawkins is gone to denver for not that much money. runyan is gone. lj smith (who sucks) is gone, considine (sucks) gone. stacy andrews will be RG, shawn andrews RT. if they keep this up mcnabb will ask for a trade like he threatened to…theyll send him to arizona for boldin because arizona wont pay warner.

  91. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 3:05 pm

The Eagles are like a poorly scripted reality show.

Hard to imagine feliz playing in that much pain, mucho respect for that.

  92. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 3:09 pm

The eagles look like theyre trying to rebuild, and mcnabb knows it and he doesnt want to stick around for it…

another rbi, technically, for john mayberry jr. im starting to like this guy as a bench option.

  93. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 3:09 pm

dont forget lito sheppard just got traded to the ny jets for a 5th round pick and a conditional pick next year…

  94. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Yep, looking more and more like McNabb’s gone…..Kolb????

    Record crowd today, 10K+, WFC!!!!

  95. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 3:25 pm

well..mcnabb said hell only sign an extension if they go out and make big moves for a reciever or a tight end. they go out and do the opposite. the only reciever out there worth coughing up money to (whos available) is boldin but itd take mcnabb to get him. i dont know that kolb is even good either or if youd need to draft someone.

  96. Geoff

    February 28, 2009 at 3:38 pm

    and buckhalter is gone…to denver..

note to the phillies….eric bruntlett cant play center field, dont even try it again.

  97. Jamie

    February 28, 2009 at 3:39 pm

I am encouraged at Mayberry’s nice day. Also, Paulino has had a good game as well.

  98. Georgie

    February 28, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Even though it’s just ST, it’s nice to get that first win under your belt.

    I wonder too what they’ll make of Kendrick’s outing…..

  99. Mike B.

    February 28, 2009 at 3:49 pm

I’ve been impressed with what I’ve been hearing about Mayberry this spring training. At least he’s better than Golson.

I think we might be seeing the Eagles management enter the “mid-to-late-’90s Phillies” zone of incompetence.

  100. Greg V.

    February 28, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Quality ST game today! It was nice to see the Phils on television playing some ball again. Kendrick looked good as did Naylor. I liked what I saw from most all of the pitching actually today. Nice to see some bombs and really a fun game all around. It was great to see Pat the Bat as well, even if it was as a Ray!

  101. MDefl

    February 28, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Mayberry looks like a stud! I know his stats in the minors were not overwhelming last year but he just has that look about him.

It is going to be interesting to see the numbers he puts up in Lehigh. I don’t want him as an extra outfielder in Philly. I would rather he play everyday.

  102. Farler
