Grapefruiting 2009: Phillies Reveal … Not Much … When Spoken To

Yesterday Phillies Nation spoke with (read: struggled through a healthy collection of beers) myriad Phillies, and here are some quick hits from those conversations:

  • President/CEO Dave Montgomery: “Stick with us,” because he expects another championship or two soon.
  • General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr: (smile, smile, smile, nod, smile) “Well, thank you.”
  • Brad Lidge: Appreciates that he was the greatest thing since sliced bread to walk into our lives.
  • Chase Utley: Claims he prefers Pacifico Beer, but I wasn’t quite buying it (Geoff Jenkins confirmed, however).
  • Geoff Jenkins: Yes, he loves Pacifico Beer.
  • Chad Durbin: Knows his dad visits Phillies Nation, but he’s OK with it, long as he’s not commenting too much. Understands and respects our place. Then I told him he was my secret 2008 MVP and he laughed.
  • John Mayberry Jr.: Became wide eyed when I told him people were looking at him as a potential everyday guy. He just wants to make the team. And he’s huge.
  • Greg Dobbs: Appreciative. For some reason we fawned over him. Might’ve been the hair.
  • Raul Ibanez: Extremely cool and smooth. Can’t wait to start the season. Knows Philadelphia’s intensity.
  • Clay Condrey: Joked about the deception of his fastball (he said it wasn’t that fast).
  • Tom McCarthy: Great conversation about his announcing (he loves doing fan spots), the legend of Harry (wants him to stay on forever, if possible) and prospects for 2009 (likes the Phils even more this year).
  • Jamie Moyer: Appreciative. We were at his charity auction/event for Camp Erin, which helps grieving children in their most important times.

We’ll have photos from the event posted soon.

Haha good read, Pacifico is a solid beer. Makes sense seeing Chase is from the pacific coast.

I was drinking Labatts with Matt Stairs and chopping wood while all this was going on!

It’s always nice to read that some of the guys we follow and root for are everyday people. Also, I’m glad to see that Joe Durbin is really Chad’s pop and that he reads the Nation too. Now, who will # 9 be?

If Abreu was #10, I’m guessing that Milt Thompson will be #9…

    in 1987 Milt hit .302, .351 OBP%, .425 SLG%
he had 46 Stolen Bases, Scored 86 Runs… and 9 Triples!

Tim did you see the ghost of Adam Eaton seething in the corner…

Amazed to see how far Phillies Nation reaches. Durbin senior must enjoy reading the posts relating to his son since most of us having nothing but good things to say about Chad Durbin, I actually think he has the potential to be more effective this season with the added support in pen.

Any thoughts on Marcus Giles and Chris Coste? Rooting for those guys but doesn’t seem to be looking to good for them right now.

Good stuff, Tim… damn, I wish I was there!

Right now i’d say Coste has a better chance of making the team than Giles, Paulino hasn’t done anything worth praise if we’re going strictly by the stats but as with Spring Training stats are misleading. Giles on the other hand started off hot and now seems to be dying from the starting role he’s been playing since ST started. He may be better off playing sporadically or maybe he just needs to go to AAA to see if he has anything left to offer.

Tough to see how Giles beats out Ozuna and Cairo right now which is a great shame.

Good vibes on Mayberry, he could be a monster if the final stages of his minor league development are handled right and an everyday spot will have to be found for him.

*Announcement* Phils are trying to make a trade with Boston Jason Donald for Jon Lester

I’m so jealous of you Tim…and Brandon that would make sense since the BoSox have Jed Lowrie and just signed Lester to an extension.

An early April Fool joke by Brandon (laughter).

  13. NJ

    March 18, 2009 at 9:17 am

That’s hilarous! Do we get Lester for Donald and then have to send Hamels for Ellsbury in a different deal after promising never to beat the Red Sox ever again? That’s about as believable as the idea Geoff suggested a few months of sending Myers to Detroit for Galagarra and Joyce.

Hit the nail on the head, Phanatic (I’m assuming you meant that wouldn’t make sense, though). Lester signed an extension three days ago… doubt they’re doing anything with him right now. Plus, that would drive the Phillies salary into the stratosphere.

I’m jealous you got to talk to these guys.

I cant think of anything better than conversations with these guys…..You have a great job….Do you need an assistant beer drinking buddy?

Yo Tim, you forgot Chris Coste and how pissed he was not to be playing, especially with Ruiz at the W B C . He started Wed… on the 3rd pitch slam right in the back, i was sitting in the 4th row(sounded pretty bad). He stayed in though. He was playing 1st Howard got the day off. Game called a tie 7-7 after Joe B gave up 3 runs. BBQ was great , had a goodtime meeting the players. Well i just got home ,talk to the nation later………..Deanno
