Moyer To Take Hill Against Pirates – Phillies Nation

Moyer To Take Hill Against Pirates

The Phillies will head to Bradenton, Florida to face the Pittsburgh Pirates for the third time this spring.  Game time is 1:05 and it will be aired on MLB Network and Comcast Sportsnet.

Jamie Moyer is the slated starter and J.A. Happ, Scott Eyre, and Brad Lidge are each scheduled to pitch for the Phillies.  Ian Snell will be on the hill for the Pirates, who was roughed up in his last spring outing.

Listening to Harry Kalas once more and I’m a happy camper…for now.

The wind is going to make this an interesting game. Hopefully it messes with the bucs too.

Bruntlett looks like he’s dropped a few pounds too, very athletic play there.

    7K’s so far for Moyer

Moyer never lets stuff bother him, always keeps his composure, a very nice trait for a pitcher to have.

That being said, I think Charlie should get him out pretty soon.

    5.2IP, 11H, 7R(7ER), 1BB, 7K, 1HR, 1Balk, 2Hit batters, 1 error(missed catch)
Came in this game with 1-1 record and 2.45era
Will probably come out with a 1-2 record unless phils stage comeback with a 5.40era
I think this was a mistake by Manuel. He should’ve taken Moyer out this inning. Anyways Eyre gets the last out in the 6th with a k. Snell is done for the pirates bautista’s in. Phils come in with a record of 10-14-2 in spring training and will host the red sox tom at clearwater at 1:05pm with guess who cole hamels startin. In a minor league game at dunedin, pedro feliz went 0for6 in the game and J.A happ gave 5runs in i think 6ip but he was better than that as most of the damage came in a 3run 1st inning. He was solid the rest of the way. Also the acquiring of taschner i think will be a steal because he’s good some good stuff including a great slider or curveball and he just needed a change of scenery like blanton, moyer, victorino and werth needed.

Geoff, the wind is blowing like 50 mph there today, nobody’s catching fly balls, if you noticed. Also, jamie’s pitch count was over 100 today by the time they took him out, he’s ahead of all the other pitchers so far this spring.

did anyone notice that Jamie was visibly upset in the dugout after he was pulled, he was grimacing, it seemed, then he was wiping his eyes like he had been crying. You don’t think he’s hurt or something?

Hes at regular season pitch counts already because he doesnt have any arm strength to build….I know they had wind, but thats unacceptable, period. Moyer knows that, which is why he was upset.

  23. Geoff

    March 28, 2009 at 4:24 pm

And you know what? The wind didnt seem to bother Ian Snell, who have up one run on two hits through 6 innings….

Some here (Geoff?) rely on the boxscore when not watching/listening to the game for one reason or another. Moyer pitched better than his line indicates. He was victimized by shoddy fielding of his team mates (Bruntlett, Jenkins and “Slo-mo” Stairs playing LF)). As Georgie pointed out, the wind did play havoc with flyballs and I suspect it also affected Moyer’s control problems to some degree. Manuel showed confidence in Moyer’s effort today in allowing him to stay into the 6th inning and a pitch count of 110. And as Georgie also pointed out, Moyer has been very effective this spring. There is nothing shown this spring to indicate that the crafty and ageless Moyer will be any less effective this season.

Bruce…I watched the ENTIRE game on CSN. Again, Ian Snell (who is trying to rebound from a horrible season last year) was FINE. He had a solid performance.

Geoff, I grant you that Snell looked very sharp against Phillies’ ST lineup. His team mates supported him offensively AND defensively. That happens even with a team like the Pirates (smile). So Moyer had his first rough outing this spring. Who’s perfect? Moyer did, however, strike out seven in his fifth spring appearance and was effective at times despite some control problems and as previously mentioned, some defensive lapses by the team. So how about giving one of your free passes to Moyer? 😉
