Phillies, Rays Wrap Up Exhibition Season

Let’s get this over with!

Well, not for Cole Hamels, who needs a successful and injury-free start to keep our breaths intact. He’ll pitch today against the Rays in the back end of the on-deck series. Game time is 1:05 p.m.

Bullpen looked very very solid last night, especially Madson/Lidge. Our offense was slow at times, but with this line up, nothing can stop its offensive explosion. Let’s be honest here.

In a strange turn, Burrell is lead off man for the Rays. And playing RF, with no DH today.

Stairs is in right, Dobbs is on 3rd. they bat 6 and 7.

Turns out Burrell will get 1 AB, and sit down, not actually seeing RF

Not good–Rays are leading 4-0 in the 1st. Burrell homered, Pena hit a 3 run shot.

And he drilled a leadoff homer…

Hamels not looking good. 2 HR, 4 runs, not even through the first

Nothing to worry about. That pitch to Burrell was more grooved than the pitch to Thome to open Citizens Bank Park.

I don’t know Matt, I’m concerned. He looked better in the 2nd, but damn.

That’s why Hamels is not the opening day starter. He needs more time to establish rhythm and command of his pitches after lengthy layoff.

And the Phightin’s bring it back, thanks to Ibanez and Dobbs each shooting two run homers.

Hamels just needed to relax and throw his usual dominant stuff. He got back the feel after he allowed the homers and has been dominant since that. I wish Monday was a holiday or something. I would watch the opening night game comfortably. Oh well holiday friday and next monday.

I’m impressed with Hamels. He regrouped nicely and is hitting his corners and making hit pitches. He’s ready I think.

well back come the rays. a single and then a bunt single followed by a double of hamels scores 2 for the tb. hamels has allowed 6 runs. Shaky. Streaky today. 4 runs in 1st, 0 in 2nd,3rd and 4th. 2 in 5th. Hamels through 5IP: 6H,6ER,1BB,7K,2HR and 1 hit batter. Batting wise Hamels 0for1 with a walk and a strikeout. 83pitches, 58strikes,28balls for Hamels.

Matt Garza out for rays. randy choate comes in. Victorino gets called looking on his second called 3rd strike both which were borderline pitches. 3B Pedro Feliz and RF Jayson Werth are the only regulars who didn’t start today. Utley grounds out. Phils have had chances to put up more runs. Bottom 2nd, 1st and 3rd 1out Dobbs strikes out and Stairs caught stealing. Bottom 3rd, 1st and 2nd 1out Vic out on strikes and utley out in a force out. Howard singles and Ibanez doubles. Can stairs come through with one out? No, he can’t. Another missed oppurtunity. Watches a called 3rd strike which was a borderline pitch.

6-4 Rays after 5 innings in Philly in the second on-deck series game. Phils won the first yesterday 3-2. Last year Phillies lost both on-deck series here at CBP against the Blue Jays. Subs for phils: Jason Ellison in LF, Miguel Cairo at 1B, Jason Donald at SS and Gary Majewski in at pitcher. Hamels is done: 5IP, 6H, 6ER, 1BB, 7K, 2HR, 1hit batter. Rollins, Ibanez, Howard, and Hamels are done for the day. All of the subs that just came in will return to the minors after today except cairo unless the phillies make a move for right handed batter later today.

majewski allows a single then gets a double play and then a flyout. brian shouse now pitching for rays. Deep flyout by dobbs on first pitch. Ruiz grounds out. Alright Jason Donald who hits a solo homer in first AB today. It’s nice to hit a HR before going back to minors. leaves nice impression on team. I’ll say it here. Donald will be starting 3B next year either beginning of year or in jUne or july. Ellison then grounds out. After 6 rays lead 6-5.

j.c romero in for majewski who pitches for phils final time before heading off to triple a. Im sure we’ll see hime later in the year. And this will also be last time we see romero pitch until i think early june or late may. Gabe Gross pinch hits for rays. Gross triples to lead off. looks like rays will get another run here or will they. jon weber grounds out but that scores gross. 7-5 rays now. Zobrist doubles. Romero a little shaky here. Zobrist now steals 3rd base which is hard to do folks. another run as aybar singles. not the j.c romero i know. i gotta go so thats it for me. go phils

Bottom of the 7th on Gameday… It says “INJURY DELAY” with Chase due up… I’m freaking out

    April 4, 2009 at 3:30 pm

    so what was the injury?

  19. Manny

    April 4, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Apparently, nothing. It just said “Injury Delay” but when the AB resumed, the “injury delay” sign disappeared and later showed Chase striking out…
