Gameday 2009

Gamenight: Marlins (20-25) At Phillies (24-18)

marlinslogoFlorida Marlins (20-25) at Philadelphia Phillies (24-18)
Chris Volstad (3-3, 3.64 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (3-4, 7.62 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Partly cloudy, 77
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies are coming off an 8-2 road trip, and will set shop in the friendly confines of Citizens Bank Park, where they’re merely a 8-12 team. Luckily they’ll play the Marlins, a team they’ve swept already this season.

Jamie Moyer, having a poor season by anyone’s standards, gets to face a team he’s dominated in the past. This season he’s already defeated them โ€” his best start, a six-inning, one-run performance on April 26, came before his worst stretch, which he made up for slightly with an OK outing Wednesday night against Cincinnati. Career Moyer is 12-1 with a 2.84 ERA against the Marlins, an ever-young collection of free swingers.

Chris Volstad pitches for Florida. He had a good start last time against the Phillies โ€” a seven-inning, three-run outing that drove him to a season-high 105 pitches. He has pitched at least six innings in his last six starts, though his last two have been among his worst this year (both four runs allowed).

After an 11-inning affair against the Yankees, it’s possible Clay Condrey and Brad Lidge might be unavailable. Ryan Madson didn’t throw too much Sunday, so he could be good to go. Chad Durbin, too. Bottom line: This could very well be a Chan Ho Park night if Moyer doesn’t throw too well.

Driving the empty wheelbarrow is Jayson Werth, hitless in his last nine at bats, which were, ironically, against primarily left-handed pitching.

Your gamenight beer: Cue the foghorn. Coming in from sea is this beauty from Anchor โ€” Old Foghorn ale. An American barleywine, it’s intensely strong and laced with bitter and fruity tastes. It’s a fantastic session beer, and on this the day we fete and honor our troops, it’s a nice way to tip the cap: Celebrate on this glorious Memorial Day evening with a strong brew that recalls the old sea (My family has Naval influence). Happy Memorial Day.

Go Phillies!

Just saw on ESPN…Charlie Manuel has stated that Brad Lidge is still the team’s closer. I hope Lidge uses that and realizes his team still has confidence in him.

    Me too.

I thought I pass again this explanation from Moyer on his past struggles:

Moyer revealed what may be the root of his recent struggles on the mound. Moyer says that he left spring training feeling good, but has not been comfortable with his arm slot. Moyer believes he may have corrected the problem when he held the Cincinnati Reds to three runs over six innings Wednesday night.

That should give fans hope that Moyer is on track and what better team than the Florida Marlins tonight for which he has continued success against.

Have a feeling a great game on hand for Phillies offense and Moyer. Offense went a little quiet durin last 2 games in Bronx. Moyer looked better last start and he says his arm slot is better than before. Look for Howard, Vic and Utley to have nice games against the righty. Good weather today with a sell-out crowd. Kane Kalas son of Harry Kalas will do Memorial Day Traditon today. Homeruns on tap for Phillies I have a feeling. Currently 81 degrees Farenheit, Partly Cloudy and Wind 5mph SE. Really think about it.

Right-Hander on Mound for Opposition + Good Weather + Sell Out Crowd + CBP + Home Crowd + Come back after 8-2 on 10 game road trip including take 2 out of 3 in Bronx + Offense a little quiet past two games + Howard and Werth due for some damage = Generally a blowout win

But again you never know. It’s baseball

    Go Phillies

    Be back around 7pm

Update: Braves 2 at Giants 5 Bottom 7
David Price making first major league start in Cleveland. In first inning
for him: allows a walk, then a double, then strikes out the next 3
    without allowing a run. Price so far: 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K.

I am all for showing Lidge we have confidence in him, but I don’t want to give up on the rest of the team by doing it. We went through this type of closer in 93 with Wild Thing. I guess I better get out a white towel and have it at the ready tonight. Let’s go Phils and I hope Jamie finally gets 250!

  9. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 6:53 pm

True but in 93 we went to the world series. I would be happy with that. Would prefer back to back titles but getting to the world series in consecutive years hasn’t happened since the Yankees of the 90’s.

Ah, thanks. I guess we get a free pass on that one. Come to think of it we had blue hats on the Fourth last year, no? I thought maybe red is the “new black”. It seems every year another team goes to red – Texas Rangers, Arizona, others?

I wanna know where little guy gets his info on the size of Geoff’s woody. I’m sure its there after moyer gave up that shot, but I don’t know about “huge”.

Man its rough that he didn’t get that call. I think the 2-0 strike probably was a ball but you can’t just make non calls to make up for it.

And the former Phillie strikes!! Wes Helms with his first homer of the year and that too against the Phillies in CBP. Attention: Somethin happened to Moyer after the 3rd. He lost his control. Walks on Ramirez on 4, walks cantu on 5, full count to helms who then hits a 3run bomb. A line out then a K. Here comes another former pHillies Ronny pauLino. Fly out.

Man you guys just cant accept the fact that the umpires have basically decided to stop giving Moyer a bigger strike zone. Theyre basically saying, hey, youre time is up pal!

  52. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:18 pm

What happened to Moyer was the lineup adjusted to him like they always do. After the first time around the lineup, Moyer isnt as effective, then when the third time around comes hes done.

  53. The Little Guy

    May 25, 2009 at 8:18 pm

  56. Ed

  57. Keith

    May 25, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Moyer needs to work on his hitting

  58. Travis

    May 25, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Werth grounds out. He’s been struggling lately. Victorino singles. Pedro Feliz up next. Vic 6/8 in stolen bases this year. I looked at MLB.com and it showed that Carl Crawford is 28/28 this year and is on pace for 100. He stole 6 in a game this year. Alright Feliz! Single by Feliz put men on 1st and 3rd with one out for Carlos Ruiz. Please no DP. Ruiz needs to do somethin as Moyer is up next even though a nice walk by Jamie last time up. Update: Mets tied 1-1 with Nats bottom 4th. 1-2 to Ruiz. We should’ve let Feliz steal second there. Damn it. Ruiz strikes out. So Moyer will bat with men on 3rd and 1st 2 outs. We’ve been struggling with our RISP. We’ve lost many games due to very poor RISP. And Moyer strikes out swinging. Phillies so far 0for4 in RISP. We had 1st and 3rd 1 out and Ruiz and Moyer each strike out swinging. Big Opportunity missed there.

  59. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:24 pm

They have been this year. Except for that one outing where the Marlins were scuffling all game, theyre pretty locked in on him after the first turn or two around the lineup. You basically cant even allow Jamie to pitch against the Mets or the Braves anymore. Its not safe.

  60. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 8:24 pm

F that. Moyer needs to work on his pitching. That’s what he is paid for.

  61. Keith

    May 25, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Travis, do u write notes for each inning after the inning is over or during? curious.

  62. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:25 pm

See that called strike was like waaaaaaaaaay outside there. A makeup call maybe, even though that one to Helms was notably inside as well.

  63. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Agreed…Moyer can not pitch against anyone with a half decent hitting coach and or veteran lineup. Notice the one guy on Florida to actually hit Moyer was the vet Helms.

  64. The Little Guy

    May 25, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Keith, i was just thinking that too.

  65. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:28 pm

The Marlins are also a really bad team, who always trades away their veterans (presumably until they get their new stadium) for young players. So yeah youd better be able to beat this team. Theyre a few grades above the Natinals, but still not ready to be a legit divisional contender until they get their new stadium.

  66. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Hermida has been around a few years, but hes just really not good.

  67. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Wow…Feliz really bailed out Moyer there.

  68. Geoff

    May 25, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Now, you know what? Just let the bullpen take it the rest of the way. I mean, no reason to play with fire any longer.

  69. Travis

    May 25, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Top 5th Marlins leading 3-2. Chris Volstad batting first. He strikes out looking. Up next is coghlan. He singles. Up next is Hermida. Top of the order (Rollins, Utley, Ibanez) up next for Phillies in bottom of 5th. Hermida strikes out swinging. Hanley Ramirez up now. He grounds into a force out.

    Moyer’s line so far: 5IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, 1HR, 85pitches, 21 batters faced

    Volstad’s line: 4.1IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 5K, 1HR, 73pitches, 19 batters faced

  71. Travis

    May 25, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Top of Phillies order does nothing in 5th. Rollins flies out on first pitch. Utley hit by pitch and Ibanez grounds into a DP. Cantu, “Macho” Helms, Uggla for the Fish in the 6th.

  72. Keith

    May 25, 2009 at 8:40 pm

    Moyer hasn’t pitched awful

  73. Evan

    May 25, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Anyone else love how dirty Utley’s slides into second always are on the DP ball? I get guilty pleasure in watching him go directly for the second baseman no matter how long he’s been out or how far off the base he’s sliding.

  74. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Not sure if I would consider Utley’s slides as dirty but I certainly do enjoy him going all out on every play.

Pretty sure Helms has more hits this game than he did his entire career in Philly.

  83. Travis

    May 25, 2009 at 8:51 pm

Jorge Cantu strikes out swinging to start the sixth inning. Wes Helms batting now. By the way nice diving catch by Coghlan on Rollins fly out. If that falls in, Utley gets hit by pitch then first and second 0 outs. “Macho” Helms delivers again. He singles. Uggla up now. Helms 2for3, 1homer, 1single, 1run scored, 3rbis. Probably last inning for Moyer. He’s at 100 pitches. Full Count to Uggla now. Uggla strikes out on a foul tip. 5K’s for moyer now. Cody Ross up for Fish now. Ross delivers. A single by him put men on first and second two outs for former phillie Paulino. 3-0 to Paulino. DAMMN! Another former phillie strikes! A single scores one. Paulino to second on the throw. 2nd and 3rd two outs for Volstad. Volstad lines out.

Yup, Ed, best money I spend every year. I see most of them. What sucks is that Saturday day games are blacked out and any and all Braves games. Darn cable company hides those so when the Phillies play the Braves I have to search 4 channels to guess. I also have XM for when I travel. I sync up LA and Scott for the away games many times. As I always say. I am NOT a Wheels fan, but I am sooooo happy to hear T-Mac and Wheels tonight.

M.P you are a true fan. I will agree with you on Wheels. He does get on my nerves. So does L.A for that matter but not as much. I do like Franzke and T-Mac.

  115. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

Yeah, Harry kept Wheels quiet, T-Mac knows how to handle him. He lets him tell his stories i.e. his first tricycle and all, but T-Mac does kind of put him in his place. HOWEVER, I had to listen to the YES!ยฎ Network all weekend. As I said it is sooooooo nice to hear T-Mac and Wheels, regardless. Wheels is always entertaining

  146. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 9:30 pm

I don’t know M.P. Texas can certainly hit the cover off the ball, and so far their pitching has been pretty darn good but I don’t know if they can get past teams like the Sox and Yankees. And who knows, the Rays might turn it up big time but I think they may have been a fluke. I don’t mean to say they aren’t good but I don’t think the Ray’s are AL Champions good.

It would be interesting to see the Rangers in the World Series vs the Phillies with their top two pitchers being Millwood and Padilla.

I’m recomending the home plate ump for the Steve Jeltz award tonight. He lost the game for the Phils!

  149. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 9:32 pm

I think the fact that so far no one but Howard has done anything is why the Phillies have lost. The Ump certainly didn’t help.

Why can’t the Phillies seem to win at home? I don’t understand it.

  150. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 25, 2009 at 9:33 pm

I think the Rangers can beat the snot out of the Yankees actually. Remember the Angels kicked Boston’s rear end until it counted. A-Roid is horrible in the post season. I still do not think the Yankees will make it though. My picks are Boston, KCR, Texas and Wildcard of either Detroit or the Rays. In the NL, I am thinking us, Cardinals and LA with a wildcard between Mets, Braves and Brewers. Lots of variables, in May though!

  151. Keith

    May 25, 2009 at 9:33 pm

I agree, home plate ump sucked

  152. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 9:36 pm

I would LOVE to see K.C in the playoffs but I think they are a year or two away. I am thinking 2011 they win the division. I am going with Detroit, Boston, L.A, and the Yankees as the Wild Card. In the NL…Phils, Cardinals, Dodgers with the Brewers as the Wild Card.

  153. Keith

  154. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 25, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Yeah, I think we have to worry about the Braves more than the Mets. I think they will implode, but earlier than September. I also think their implosion will come from injuries and errors, as the core of their team is being ripped slowly. I’d LOVE the Nats to finish highwer than the Mets, but I am dreaming on that.

  155. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 25, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Volstad is the reason we are losing, seriously, we should trade for HIM

  156. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 9:40 pm

I’d love it to. The Nat’s will be someone to watch out for in about two years if they can ever get any pitching. I agree, I think the Mets are done. They have one pitcher, Johan and no one seems to be able to hit. Iw ouldnt be surprised to see Reyes get traded before the season is over.

  157. The Little Guy

    May 25, 2009 at 9:41 pm

I don’t understand why the phils don’t try and get some sinker ball pitchers? Or at least try to develop some in the minors?

  158. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 25, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Ed, they will stay competitive, and I believe because of games like this may take first here and there, but they will slowly fade, not quickly fade like 07 and 08

  162. Ed

    May 25, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Can’t argue with you there but I would prefer another collapse. It’s just so much fun to see. I can just picture the various anti Met’s shirts that would pop up in Philly if it happened for a third year in a row. But then again, if the Phillies can’ beat teams who are in the middle of a 9-24 slump…AT HOME, then they don’t deserve to win their division.

  163. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 25, 2009 at 9:45 pm

They took too many fastballs and swung at too much junk. And they tried to hit all the pitches they saw out of the park. And the ump goofed at Moyer’s expense too many times. I respect all umpires, but they do have off-nights, and this was one of them.

Victorino should be benched tomorrow for that. That was inexcuseable. I would allow Mayberry to get the start tomorrow in RF slide Werth to CF.

The Phillies are going to struggle at home as long as they continue to play stupid and lazy baseball at home: Rollins getting thrown out in the first, Victorino’s throw to home and then his attempting to steal second while down 2 with a slugger at bat. They just seem to play with thier heads up their butts while at home.

I think there’s a good chance Charlie will bench Vic for that, he was definitely not happy when he came into the dugout, and Charlie doesn’t put up with crap like that. If he benched Jimmy, he’ll bench Vic.

Keep Werth in RF, Mayberry in Cf
