A tough homecoming for the Phillies last night, but tonight is a new chance to grab the golden ring. Joe Blanton has the task against the Marlins at a potentially damp Citizens Bank Park.

Blanton was workmanlike for four innings Thursday against Cincinnati, but the fifth inning became a mess of problems. A Brandon Phillips home run did Blanton in, ending his night after five. He’s hoping to get his ERA back below seven and maybe to a season-best number – anything below 6.82. And he’ll get to do it against a group of players he hasn’t faced much. Most is Jorge Cantu, who is only .231 against Blanton.

The Phillies will stare down young Andrew Miller, of whom they’ve not taken advantage. His last start against the Phils was an eight-inning, seven-strikeout performance on June 11. Since, he made a few relief appearances against the Phils with one tough outing. Shane Victorino has hit him well (.455 AVG, 2 HR).

That’s good news for Vic, who was struggling in May but quietly climbing back to normalcy. His average sits at .270, thanks mostly to his good weekend in the Bronx.

Your gamenight beer: Bitter with fruity smell and golden appearance, Staropramen Lager is a Czech pilsner with international flavor. With its low alcohol content (5 percent), it’s perfect for a rainy night such as this. Even if there is no game, you can enjoy a few of these and move on with your night. Enjoy this with a good bowl of chicken noodle soup.

Go Phillies!

No offense Tim, but beer and chicken soup sounds disgusting! Its a good beer though but Id say enjoy it with some shrimp, red pepper, and pineapple kabobs on the grill. Rain be damned!

Anyone know if Victorino is playing after his failed 9th inning steal?

I’m really liking the Weyerbacher and Victory Brewing company beers. Some really good ones. Golden Monkey sneaks up on you and wham. I also really like the Duvel Golden Pale Ale.

I read the following report where Blanton believes he discovered ” a slight mechanical flaw” in his delivery:

“..And after watching video over the past four days, he detected a slight mechanical flaw that he believes he’ll have corrected before he faces the Florida Marlins on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. “Out of the stretch, I wasn’t allowing my arm to follow through, and it was leaving the ball more over the plate,” said Blanton, 2-3 with a 7.11 ERA. “My fastball was not as crisp. It’s a little thing, but it makes a big difference. With this little adjustment, hopefully that will be the cure.”

    Hoping Blanton pitches well tonight.

  5. Tim Malcolm

    May 26, 2009 at 6:13 pm

That adjustment alone should allow his fastball more movement; if anything, it allows it to land on the lower half of the zone, inducing more grounders. Could limit his home run totals a bit.

That would bring him back to normal.

“Staropramen is good beer if you have… what is the opposite of diarrhea? Constipation. If you have constipation and want it to stop, Staropramen is good beer.” A Czech once said that to me. I laughed for five minutes straight. And later that night found out it was true. It does taste great though.

Here’s hoping we get a good outing out of Joe and Two Thirds tonight.

I’m pulling for Big Joe but I am not going to lie. There is a part of me that wants the Phillies to spot the Fish 3 runs and start the game in the 7th inning!

I know Hollywood….ever since that dumb poll listed him as being underrated he has taken a s**t on his batting average and really his overall play is just terrible right now. Besides the throw on Sunday I can’t think of one positive thing he has done in the last week. I can’t even remember a hit other than the bomb against Burnett where A.J. missed his spot by about 3 feet.

Nicely done, Blanton. Does Charlie push the envelope and let him hit for himself? I wouldn’t risk a Blanton blowup in the 7th, I’d pinch hit for him.

Hes baaaaaaaaaack. Now he looks right. Blanton was racking up the K’s when he was on last year, and he has 9 tonight. This is what were used to seeing…if this guy starts to get it together, then all we have to worry about it Moyer.

Yeah cxl the fact is that one bad pitch to Brandon Phillips is the only reason he is not working on back to back damn good starts. 113. Geoff

    May 26, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Moyers the guy whos in hot water now. Hey man, you go 7 innings and strike out 11 batters, youve bought yourself some leeway there.

  114. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 9:15 pm

    I agree Miles.

Blaton pitched ok against the Braves on 5/9 (2 HR) and then great on 5/4 @ STL. He’s a rock solid #5 and should have an ERA around 4.50 with 33 starts and 200IP. Not too shabby….

  115. The Dipsy

cxl72: Blanton isn’t a No.5, he’s more like a No.3 or a very solid No.4… consider that last year he was the Opening Day starter for the A’s… We overrated him after the World Series and now we’re definitely underrating him because of his slow start.

It looks like our No. 5 is Jamie…

  124. Miles

Just a side note….Sheff is starting to warm up for the Mutts. Another 3 run bomb tonight to put them up 5 in the 7th. Maybe we could have used him after all.

    May 26, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Well, I’m not going to say that Blanton’s turned it around quite yet, but this was a great start. Let’s pray to God he has and hope that they find a solution to the Moyer problem.

  127. Gavin

    May 26, 2009 at 9:27 pm

why does manuel use madson here?

  128. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Manny I think of Blanton as a #5 because he’s like a Cory Lidle that eats innings, takes the ball every 5 days and on average gives you 6 innings and 3 earned runs.

    My assessment of our starters….

    Hamels — solid #1
    Myers — more like a #3 than a #2
Happ — looks like a #4 based on potential
    Blanton — solid #5

Moyer not funtioning like a starter

  129. Tracey Green

    May 26, 2009 at 9:28 pm

For everything holy……please leave in Madson!

  130. Dave

    May 26, 2009 at 9:29 pm

    Oh, and damn, Madson’s good.

  131. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 9:29 pm

Sheff’s OPS over .900 and he hasnt killed them with his glove. He wouldnt get much playing time here and is really benefiting from all of the Met injuries.

I don’t know why you bring in Madson here. He is a machine though.

  132. Ed

    May 26, 2009 at 9:32 pm

I am getting tired of Charlie using Madson in non impact situations(up by 3, tie games or save situations. He did it last Friday too. One of these days, Madson will be unavailable because he was used in a situation he shouldn’t have been. Isn’t that what we have guys like Taschner for?

    May 26, 2009 at 9:39 pm

we are 3 outs away from a shutout. can it be? in our 44th game. i’m pretty pumped.

    hahahaha….baby steps. Love it.

Everyone still worried about our pitching? Seems like the rotation is rounding into form and J.C is a week away. Now if we can just get Lidge’s head on right we might be alright after all.

  137. Dave

    May 26, 2009 at 9:42 pm

According to gameday, that’s a pretty… interesting strike zone.

    Oh my dear god….

  150. Gavin

    May 26, 2009 at 9:48 pm

You’ve gotta be kidding me. We’re going to have to use Lidge or Condrey now.

  151. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 9:48 pm

C’mon I’m like a friggin jinx here. You’re killing me Durbin.

  152. Miles

Maybe we will still see Lidge tonight!

  153. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 26, 2009 at 9:48 pm

I wa s abit busy tonight, why was Blanton pulled out of the game?

  154. Keith

    May 26, 2009 at 9:48 pm

don’t worry everyone, Eyre has comfortable hands lol

  155. Ed

    May 26, 2009 at 9:48 pm

You know a lot of pitchers have gotten ripped on here lately but I have not heard Durbin’s name mentioned. Pretty sure next to Lidge and now Park, he has the highest era in the pen.

  156. Dave

    May 26, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Time for them to bring in Condrey.

  157. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Gamecast still gives us a 97% chance of winning. Why must things always be so difficult!?!?

  158. Ed

    May 26, 2009 at 9:49 pm

    M.P…he threw 114 pitches through 7 innings.

  159. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 26, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Now, tonight would have been the night to TRY Lidge. I respect Charlie, I just don’t get him

  160. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 26, 2009 at 9:51 pm

    NOW Lidge is up

  161. Manny

    May 26, 2009 at 9:51 pm

I’d definitely be up for letting Lidge get a 1-out save (if Eyre gets this batter out)

  162. Ed

    May 26, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I agree with you M.P, I might have tried Lidge tonight hoping to try and get his confidence up a bit but I understand not using him. Don’t want to make him unavailable on a night when you really need him.

I can’t believe what our pen is doing right now.

  163. Gavin

    May 26, 2009 at 9:52 pm

    this is painful.

  164. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 26, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I just don’t understand why Lidge was not brought in being 5 runs up. CONFIDENCE… I mean that is the perfect spot, if he gives one up who cares

  165. Griffin

    May 26, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Don’t walk him Eyre, a walk is as bad as a Grand Slam

    AGHHH!!!!!!!!

  173. Ed

    May 26, 2009 at 9:54 pm

    Here comes Lidge…

Just curious…when were baseball players taught to throw the ball sidearm?

I never saw it once in all the years I played.

  174. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 26, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Ok, now is do or die time for Lidge. I am behind him, but I am nervous. Remember, even those two runs on make it a 5-4 game. He needs the out.

  175. Miles

    May 26, 2009 at 9:54 pm

He should have just stepped on first and at least kept the tying run off the basepaths. I guess that’s in retrospect but geez that was hard to watch.

  176. Griffin

  183. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

    May 26, 2009 at 9:56 pm

It is all good, I can work with 5-4. Ok, let’s rally behind Lidge. I am absolutely behind him. If I am wrong now I will be eating crow for a week.

  211. Keeg

    May 26, 2009 at 10:02 pm

I just want a shutout, and Moyer’s 250th win. I haven’t been able to get either. What the hell! We have a shutout for 8 and a third and still can’t manage to get one? Blanton deserves better than that from our bullpen, he kicked effing ass today.

And now a single will tie it.

And yet again the Phils have the undeniable ability to make what looks like the most comfortable game ever, 5-0 through 8, into a nail-biter. What must they do this?!

  212. cxl72

Look at Vic going 4 for 5 tonight. Way to come back after last nights YAK. Some bloggers wanted to bench him for being an idiot but Charlie made the right call.

TIM MALCOLM please take that Jeltz bag off Vic and award the Ashburn player of the game to Blanton.

    Thanks you!!

  239. Brian of CO

    May 26, 2009 at 10:07 pm

That was a humorous way to describe it Phillies Phan SC. LOL. Im glad we won, a little concerned that we held them scoreless the entire game, then gave up 3 runs in the ninth. Whay did Charlie take Madson out?

  240. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54

    May 26, 2009 at 10:07 pm

  241. Brian of CO

    May 26, 2009 at 10:08 pm

The mets are playing the Nationals, they wont fade until they play another team. We cant lose another game when the Mets are playing the Nats.

  242. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54

    May 26, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Brian, my question is still why did BLANTON come out even at 114 pitches? He still had it. I would have tried him for 8.

  243. Andrew

    May 26, 2009 at 10:09 pm

Because he’s not going to hit Madson leading off the bottom of the 8th with guys like Dobbs and Stairs needing at bats.

  244. Griffin

    May 26, 2009 at 10:10 pm

M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54, I agree, Lidge needed this. It was almost worth it to have the 9th inning play out like that, just to give Lidge some confidence.

Awesome job by Blanton and Lidge, two guys we need to get on track.

  245. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54

    May 26, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Brian – partially agree, depends on their pitching. I am not worried right now if the Mets take #1. I still say they will slowly fade. Be more concerned with the Braves this year. Of course I would rather see the Braves win than the Mets, if it is not us – I do think we will do it though.

  246. Brian of CO

    May 26, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I didnt see any of the game, I had to watch it on the blackberry (aka crackberry), looking back on the stats, I see 7 IP 0 ER 5 hits 11 freaking SO and only 2 BB. Was he really that good tonight? WTF?

  247. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 10:11 pm

After we play the Nats this weekend we will have to wait until 9/8-9/10 and 9/15-9/17 to beat them again.

  248. Brian of CO

    May 26, 2009 at 10:12 pm

I couldnt agree with more Phillies Phan.

  249. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54

    May 26, 2009 at 10:13 pm

I think Lidge should have come in though in the 9th with the 5-run lead. That way if he gave up the runs, no big deal. This did give him good work. Although he left some of those up. His slider bit great on Helms though. Kruker showed it best, Lidge’s pitches have been up and that is when he gets hurt.

  250. cxl72

    May 26, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Tim awards the Ashburn to Blanton. I hate seeing the Jeltz award on the site.

  251. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54

    May 26, 2009 at 10:15 pm

cxl72 – The Nats play hard against us, I would rather not play them LOL. We seem to not be able to beat the Mets and Nats easily. What we need to do is beat the Braves and Marlins more if we are to comete aganist the Mets. You all and Tim M convinced my wife and I to go to DC versus Philly though. We are going to the games on Oct. 2-4 though in case they clinch on that timeframe again. Saw it last year and would not miss it again!

  252. Brian of CO

    May 26, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Phillies Phan, look at it this was with Lidge coming in when he did. He came in with 1 out bases loaded. Gave up a fielders choice, one run, and a Strike Out. Thats pretty good for his confidence to come in and get that done vs coming in and maybe give up all 3 and still getting the save. IMO

  253. M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54

    May 26, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Tim read us quickly, already changed

  254. Griffin

    May 26, 2009 at 10:16 pm

The Phils should look to go 3-1 in the next 4 games. Like cxl72 says, after this weekend, no more Nats games until September, unfortunately.

Watching the D-Backs game now. I still think Hinch was a bad, bad choice. Outside of the Phillies, I like the D-Backs. Hate it that Bob Melvin is gone. Actually, I think it is because I like Mark Grace so much…

Mitch Williams was just talking about the Phillies on the MLB Network. Basically he said, Lidge looked good, Rollins when he gets on base, the Offense usually comes alive, doesnt have to hit, just get on. Ibanez, “one mane wrecking crew” and something along the lines of “better not let him miss the All Star Game, Ibanez was the best signing of the Winter in the league”

In Mark Grace’s final at bat ever, he singled off the immortal Mariano Rivera to lead off the 9th inning of Game 7 in the 2001 World Series. What a way to go out.

Griffin – He actually played until 2003, but not full-time. My only regret of Mark Grace is that he was not a Phillie, still a brilliant baseball man. I love his philosophy – do need for the long ball, put the ball i play and be aggressive. If you see a good pitch, swing for the stars though!
