Gameday: Phillies (58-41) At Giants (55-46)

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants

Rodrigo Lopez (3-0, 3.09 ERA) vs.
Jonathan Sanchez (3-9, 4.92 ERA)

Time: 10:05 p.m at AT&T Park
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 58
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies open up a four game series against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants are a better team than in previous years.  They are well over .500 and lead the National League Wild Card by a half game.

This is most likely Rodrigo Lopez’s last start because of the additions of Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez.  A great outing would make a tough decision for the Phils.  He is pitching for his job so he has not choice but to step it up.

Jonathan Sanchez threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres on July 10, but he barely became a starter.  Moved from the rotation to the bullpen, he found himself back in the rotation due to injuries.  Other than the no-no, Sanchez has struggled with an ERA close to 5.

Shane Victorino will  not be in the lineup due to a knee contusion.  Tonight’s lineup: Rollins (SS)/ Utley (2B)/ Werth (RF)/Howard (1B)/ Ibanez (LF)/ Francisco (CF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Ruiz (C)/ Lopez (P)

GuinnessYour Gameday Beer – Guinness
I don’t need to tell you about Guinness. I’m sure you’re familar with its dark creamy goodness and fun fluffy head. This stout is one to savor, not the least of which because you have to wait those extra 2 minutes for the bartender to finish the pour. Since a Guinness is a meal in itself, skip the dinner and have some chocolate ice cream.  – By Brian

GO PHILLIES!

Should be interesting. I’m sure Lopez will put on a stellar performance tonight to make people scratch their heads thinking, do we really wanna get rid of this guy in our starting rotation? hehe. I’m looking forward to seeing how Francisco does tonight. Get well soon Victorino. We need ya. Cliff Lee is pitching tomorrow — so much to look forward to.

Blown call that just cost us a run. Argh. Well, we’ll have to score enough that it just won’t matter.

David M. – he is right handed and was advertised as sinker, GB pitcher though he has 40% GB outs to 30% FB outs…Anytime i here groundball pitcher i like it, but wouldn’t call him a sinkerballer, so other than that he’s right handed…maybe we can package him for another whatever…Sherill went to Dodgers (don’t know if this old news)

Wheels says “Cliff, don’t take any tips from Lopez” Ouch, that’s harsh. This is Lopez’s first weak night.

  21. Repeat!

    July 30, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Not sure. No worries though. Cliff Lee will get plenty of nationally televised starts with his new team. Especially in October/November.

  22. Griffin

    July 30, 2009 at 10:50 pm

To be fair to Lopez, he gave up a bunt single and a blown call and a misplay by Wertfh led to 2 runs.

  28. Georgie

    July 30, 2009 at 10:57 pm

When Wheels said “Cliff, don’t take any tips from Lopez” he meant about hitting. Lopez has only 2 hits in 50+ ABs. He was not commenting at all about his pitching only his hitting skills.

It looks like the Pirates are just trading away and major league player that was there during the Dave Littlefield years of 67-win teams. Theyre assumbling a decent farm system actually…..meanwhile Im SO fired up for the Lee debut tomorrow.

  37. Geoff

    July 30, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Extra bonus..Its a matchup of the two reigning Cy Young winners: Cliff Lee vs Tim Lincecum. That could be a memorable night tomorrow night.

Runner on 3rd no out with Utley, Werth and Howard up. Ugh.

  54. Repeat!

    July 30, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Your wrong Griffin. Howard has holes in his swings that’s for sure. But last inning was a team effort. Lack of fundamentals at times really kills this club just as Thunder said.

  55. Griffin

    July 30, 2009 at 11:14 pm

    That was a freaking bomb

  56. DJ

    July 30, 2009 at 11:15 pm

Why does that always happen! Stran a runner and the other team comes up and makes you pay! God!

  57. Keith

    July 30, 2009 at 11:15 pm

I thought T-Mac was the one who said “Cliff, don’t take any tips from Lopez.”

  58. Griffin

    July 30, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Repeat!, my point about Howard is that he’s a threat to hit the ball out of the park at anytime and with a runner on 3rd and one out, you want him up to hit a sac fly, but he’s not going to hit many singles through the shift.

Last inning was a total team effort and is not entirely Howard’s fault by any means.

  59. Morris Buttermaker

    July 30, 2009 at 11:18 pm

    What an incredibly dull game…

  60. Georgie

  61. Repeat!

    July 30, 2009 at 11:26 pm

I understand Griffin. It’s semi-early and we’re only down 3-1, but the Phils are kinda working my nerves here. Last nite they totally blew it in that 7th innning. Werth, Dobbs gave horrible abs. We’ll wait and see how this one plays out, but I’m a little concerned the Phils may be starting to puff out their chess a little too much. They’re were several quotes from diff players after we got Lee that went “When we make the playoffs”. I like their swagger, but I hope they don’t let their guard down. The Fish/Braves aren’t going anywhere for at least a little while.

  62. Griffin

    July 30, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Let’s hope that complacency hasn’t set it yet. Let’s get some runs.

  77. mg52

    July 30, 2009 at 11:43 pm

I’m not gonna lose sleep over this. As Miles reminded me last night, this offense has a World Series title to back up its claim as a front-running team this year. They will find their way. We will hope for a major comeback tonight and, if it doesn’t take place, we’ll be looking to tomorrow.
It is worrisome, though, that the Giants – offensive doormats up to this point, relatively speaking – are putting up these kinds of numbers. That’s what an opportunistic offense will do: not get many runs, but get the necessary ones. That ump also should be shaking his head; the pseudo-stolen base could be looked at as a pivotal point in this game.
I have a good feeling that the Phils will feed off Lee’s first start in red pinstripes and come after the Giants. These guys need to get down to business – cleaner fielding, wiser hitting. The pitching will hopefully speak for itself.

  80. j reed

The third base coach needs to be fired. Down 5 runs and we aren’t challenging the throw? The Giant’s outfielders have yet to field a ball of the wall well, we should have two more runs if the 3rd base coach had any clue of what he was doing.

alex – though Sam’s alright…i want him to get Leo Mazzone in for Dubee but aint gonna happen…i don’t what’s goin’ on with him …could be dead, working for another club, lost his touch…

Yea I can understand not wanting to push it too hard with Ibanez, but some risks have to be made. Lopez was left in one inning too long… they shouldve taken him out when he first got into trouble. The Phils have no energy the last two games. Its like they just assumed that the last two games would be pushovers. Theyre playing with no heart… better yet… theyre playing like theyre the Mets right before choking down the stretch.

the phils always hit good pitchers (lilly, zambrano, beckett, haren) but can’t hit guys that aren’t any good like petit last now and now sanchez yea he threw a no-hitter but he still isn’t that good.

No kidding George, I think Sanchez is 3-9.

They made Petit look like Halladay last night

Alex- they could also be tired. I don’t think they are not trying…the Giants are good team and no one had seen Sanchez before (i think), they’re sloppy play is a sign of fatigue…

No, that would be Erin Andrews… Oh, that’s so wrong! But so true.

Wont be happening. No way that ownership will be paying both Lee’s and Halladay’s contracts next year. Too much of a jump considering the jump theyre already going to have to pay. And they won’t trade Lee for Halladay because the Jays still want Drabek. Halladay will either be a Jay or a Red Sox tomorrow. My bet is on staying a Jay because their GM screwed him and blew his chance for playing for a contender this year.

Sorry for that last one. Totally uncalled for.

Alex – yeah…imagine what Halladay would do to us….I just hope he doesn’t go to any team we might see in the fall. Part of me just wanted to get him so we wouldn’t see him. it took me forever to even believe it was possible so i still want him…

  147. Repeat!

    July 31, 2009 at 12:51 am

You know what, Lee going to a contender wouldhave potentially hurt us a lot more. Kinda like the Dodgers getting Sch from the O’s. I still think RA will grab Doc too. I don’t know why, but I’m fairly confident it’ll happen. On Tues I said Phils would get Doc by Weds afternoon. They got Lee instead, but I was in the ballpark. No, I’m not gonna lie and say I have “ghost” sources. It’s just a feeling I have. Phils get Doc.

Two in row. Sky’s not falling, but they need to stop the bleeding. Cliff Lee:Welcome to the Defending World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies. Good luck

We haven’t played these last two games well at ALL. I hope our offense isn’t just shutting down on us…certainly seems like it…although today could be attributed to Lopez (for the Jeltz?), but our offense never clicked today, much like last night.

I’m off to bed…got a headache, probably from watching Bruntlett have an at bat…every game he gets one, my head starts to hurt…

Even cliff lee will lose a game with 0 or only 2 runs of support. C’Mon offense!

Alex- i hope your right…i’m not prospect saavy, but i look around the entire NL and that’s all i see teams of could ofs. Not that it can’t work. But the failure rates pretty high. As two our club, I think we produce mashers best and not pitchers…All Hamels needed was the opportunity. He had an elite ace’s mechanics, found that elite ace’s focus in WS, but still needs to develop the elite ace arsenal, but he’s more than capable of that (short off season and injury made it more difficult). Plus he’s the lean lanky crafty change-up guy…pitcher model of the day. other than that most of our pitching prospects have the raw materials but they lack the polish on their secondary stuff that the A’s, Twins, Padres, Dodgers, Red Sox guys have. Point is I rather at this point buy the arms that we need until we develop the pitching acumen to get these guys more servicible.. Like where in the hell do the Marlins find those guys…one thing i know is you can’t teach height and for the most part speed. Other than knapp i’m just not as attached. Taylor and the other hitter i liked but could again part with one of them.

Repeat! No way, Halladay is a double whammy of what kills our offense the most: Sinkerballer (most devasting one in the mlb) with a compliment of three off speed pitches (no sluvey filler stuff), cutter, curve, change…if you though Werth looked funny tonight. Lee as a Dodger would be great at home but in hitters park where his numbers are less than stellar we would have a pretty good chance of win with all the fly balls he induces, a couple would leave the park. Nope Halladay arsenal is set up decimate power, AL style line-ups like ours…

Maybe the Phils had difficulty adjusting to the cooler, damp weather in Frisco as compared to Phoenix. Should play better as series proceeds.
