Happ Named Sporting News Rookie of the Year

The good news just keeps on coming.

Phillies lefty J.A. Happ was named National League Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News according to the Twitter of David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Happ went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA for the Phillies this year, while shuffling from the bullpen to the rotation in the regular season, and then back to the bullpen for the postseason.  He appeared in 35 games, starting 23 of the them, after Chan Ho Park was pulled from the starting five.

In the American League, Chicago White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham was the ROY winner.

The award is voted on by the players.

Whoa, I’m a little surprised. I thought McCutchen would get it, but congrats to JA!

    howard – ROY & MVP
jimmy – MVP, gold glove, silver sluggers
    victorino – gold glove
    happ – ROY
Allstars – howard, werth, victorino, chase, raul (2009)

Am I correct in saying that this isn’t the official ROY award? I didn’t think that was announced until later…

Congrats to JA! I do have on quetion though, why hasn’t chase gotten a gold glove? He is consistently the best fielding 2nd baseman or at least one of the best in the league (barring thurday and fridays games). So I’m just wondering why he hasn’t been given that honor as of yet…

The “official” NL rookie of the year award is named a few days after the World Series. I think McCutcheon will get it but that doesn’t demean the fantastic season that Happ had.

Sam, I think Chase has a somewhat polarizing affect to some sports writers and fans outside of the Philly Sports world, ESPECIALLY New Yorkers because he kills the Mets. 🙂 I agree that its kind of BS, but oh well, it may also have something to do with the team he is on. Some sports writers might just want to “spread the wealth” considering they are WS Champs, the most amount of All Stars in the Majors, 3 straight NL East champs, and the other honors mentioned above. I would say that single post from gabriel would without make any fan from any other team ESPECIALLY in the NL East DESPISE the Phillies even more…I LOVE IT! I say Keep on hating, because that means the Phillies keep on Winning. When the hating stops, I am afraid the wins stop.

That’s awesome!! Congrats JA… well deserved.

Beckham won the TSN ROY for the AL… the MLB only gives out one ROY award. Howard won the MLB ROY award in 2006 without winning the TSN variety. Geovany Soto won the award last year (yawn).

MLB gives out the official BBWAA award to both leagues since 1949 (Soto and Longoria last year)

Did you mean Coghlan with Florida? He had a better year than McCutcheon.

    Well deserved by Happ.

Yeah Coghlan is the front runner for the award in my opinion. Happ probably could have held him off without the injury problems at the end of the year but Coghlan had more hits after the all star break than anyone in baseball, and I don’t think it was really that close.

Many kudos to J A Happ. I hope this is the first of many successful campaigns as a Phil.

The ROY award that counts in the eyes of baseball fandom is the one voted by baseball writers association of America (BBWAA). I agree with a few here that considers Chris Coghlan the frontrunner. He was a hit machine for the Marlins and finished strong with a .321 BA.

Coghlan will definitely get the official ROY award. But this Sporting news award may be more of an honor considering that it is voted on by JA’s peers, as the article said. Happ said as much when he found out.
