World Series Gameday: Phillies at Yankees, Game 2

YankeesPhiladelphia Phillies (1-0) at New York Yankees (0-1)

Pedro Martinez, RHP vs. A.J. Burnett, RHP

Time: 7:57 p.m at Yankee Stadium
Weather: Clear, 50
TV: FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation

That couldn’t have gone much better.  Cliff Lee was superb in a complete-game six hitter against the Yankees in Game 1 in New York.  Not many pitchers can pull off a feat as monumental as that, but Lee was focused from the get go after striking out Derek Jeter to begin the festivities.

Pedro Martinez takes the ball in Game 2.  If you said in April (hell, even July) that Pedro Martinez would be starting in the second game of the World Series AGAINST THE YANKEES, someone probably would have smacked you.  My how the baseball world turns.

Martinez will look to win his seventh postseason game tonight against A.J Burnett.  Pedro called himself “the most influential player” to ever play at Yankee Stadium, and now he must back up that claim.  For his career, he has face New York six times in the postseason (five starts) and has allowed 18 earned runs over 35 1/3 innings of work (4.60 ERA).  Pedro has called the Yankees “his daddy” before, but let’s hope the roles are reversed tonight.

A.J. Burnett is not as familiar with the spotlight as Pedro Martinez, and has had his ups and downs during his first trip to the postseason.  Burnett got knocked around by the Angels in his latest start, going six innings while allowing six earned runs over eight hits.  The 32-year old throws hard, but has been known to miss the plate a time or two.  In the regular season, Burnett had 17 wild pitches, the most in the American League, and in the playoffs he has already walked 10 batters in 18 1/3 innings.

With that said, the Phillies need to use the same patience they showed with C.C. Sabathia last night.  Burnett’s pitch counts will spike if he’s wild from the get go, which could very well happen in this high pressure situation.  With the Yanks down a game already, Burnett has some weight on those shoulders.

Chase Utley gave the offense a shot last night, belting two home runs off of C.C., who had previously given up just three jacks this whole season to lefty hitters.

For the Yankees this evening, you will not see right fielder Nick Swisher in the starting lineup. Late word out of New York is that Swisher has been benched in favor of Jerry Hairston Jr. Jose Molina takes over for Jorge Posada at catcher, as he normally does with A.J. Burnett.

According to the twitter of Andy Martino, Greg Dobbs was sent back to Philadelphia with the flu, giving the Phillies one less bench option.

Matt Stairs is your DH tonight, taking over for Ben Francisco with a right hander on the hill for N.Y.

Phillies. Yankees. Game 2. Let’s do it.

Phillies Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Stairs (DH), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C).

Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Damon (LF), Teixeria (1B), Rodriguez (3B), Matsui (DH), Cano (2B), Hairston Jr. (RF), Cabrera (CF), Molina (C).

PresidenteYour Gameday Beer – Presidente
In honor of tonight’s Phillies starter, we’re serving up the Dominican Republic’s most popular domestic beer. Like other Caribbean beers, Presidente has the appearance of an American Light Pilsner. The taste is that of a macrobrew with corn and grain being the predominant flavors and skunked being the predominant aroma. However, if you have a cold Presidente on a hot Dominican day, there are few things finer. Eat it with as much shrimp as you can get your hands on. – By Brian

GO PHILLIES, Vote for Pedro. Time to go up 2-0 on the Yanks

    October 29, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Wait til you see the Yanks lineup for tonight. Looks like they’re gonna try to beat Pedro with only 6 hitters and 18 outs. The bottom of the order is pathetic, by playoff standards.

    October 29, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Uh oh…Dobbs just got sent home with the flu and Matty will take his place at DH tonight. Looks lie Charlie has a short bench to deal with.

Hmm, Phillies vs. a Hard throwing righty. How does this usally end, I haven’t seen many games?

game 2 1 hour 6 minutes away, nice to be home for the whole thing. Pedro is pitching with house money tonight, would not be surprised if he hits A-Rod his first at bat, not saying he should or will but just that I would not be surprised if it happened. Should be another good game either way. Would love to take 2 on the road.
What is up with NY line up, how has it changed from last night. Pasada DH, Malina behind the plate, is Swisher out of RF? Post it if you know it

    October 29, 2009 at 7:02 pm

sorry did not notice it at the bottom of the post I am an idiot. Harriston instead of .123 Swisher and we all knew Pasada would be out. Hopefully Pedro pitches well and the bats start hitting right away.
One Hour left, and for you wine drinkers out there there is a red wine call Bastardo, and it is actually really good, may be the drink for next season. Notice not a lot of those Yankee fans here today, especially the ones who were saying how much bette CC was then Cliff.
I will take Cliff, behind the back, tap you on your ass, basket Catch, Lee this year in the Playoff and the WFS.
It is not over by a long shot, but two in the Bronx would be nice, even if I do have tickets to game 5

I like that Charlie is putting him out there. I like how Pedro is sort of smack talking. I think he is protecting his team from a lot of media attention. That allows for more focus on the game. Good teamwork Charlie and Pedro!

I have to come clean. I’m a lifelong Mets fan, and I even tried rooting for the Yankees at the beginning of game 1.

It lasted 2/3 of an inning.

The Phillies are just way too gritty and ballsy not to like, or at the very least, appreciate. They remind me of the ’86 Mets. So, there it is. I’ll be supporting the Phils in this WS.

Yea, the Phillies got a run of Burnett and he has not even had his meltdown yet.

But there was no player I would root for. They were very unlikeable. But this team is great to watch.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:06 pm

at least AJs pitch count is going up fast. already over 60 pitches.

  130. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Come on Big Brown, I was expecting a little more out of you vs a right hander. Oh well, plenty more at bats to go.

    Let’s go Pedro.

  131. Tracey

    October 29, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Well, at least we punched up his pitch count. And really, much worse off than the count shows because of all those throws to 1st

  132. Georgie

    October 29, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Wow, Burnett’s only 32? He looks older than Jamie.

  133. Whizwithout

    October 29, 2009 at 9:07 pm

hes facing a good pitcher in the early innings of the game, no reason for pannicing lol

  134. j reed

Alright pedro hold em down, next inning we get to Burnett

  135. joedad

    October 29, 2009 at 9:09 pm

  136. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Yeah that 1-1 curve ball was a cookie to howard

  137. j reed

  147. joedad

    October 29, 2009 at 9:16 pm

Atta boy Pedro. Need to keep up with the patient at bats and knock hem into middle relief

  148. Tracey

  151. Keith

    alright Werth

  152. Tracey

    October 29, 2009 at 9:21 pm

Here comes that 4th you predicted, Ed!

  153. HotDogs

    October 29, 2009 at 9:22 pm

They definitely need to get some runs up for Pedro this inning.

  154. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 9:23 pm

    what the hell Werth?

  155. Tracey

    October 29, 2009 at 9:23 pm

Tracey, until you pointed it out, I had no idea that was a blackberry commercial and I’ve heard/seen it 50+ times

  160. poomie

    October 29, 2009 at 9:25 pm

    crap

  161. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Well it started off so well and then Werth just got caught leaning too far…he should have gotten back but it honestly wasn’t the worst base running mistake ever.

  162. HotDogs

    October 29, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Mistakes CANNOT be made against that team! UGH!

  163. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Well werth completely brain farted there…we had Burnett

  164. Tracey

    October 29, 2009 at 9:27 pm

@Joedad: The song says “all you need is love,” but the commercial is telling you that what you actually need is an expensive techie toy.

  165. joedad

    October 29, 2009 at 9:27 pm

it was an amazing play by Molina but bad baserunning by Werth

  166. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 9:27 pm

Pedro hold on baby for one more inning

  167. Keith

  171. ChesapeakePhan

    October 29, 2009 at 9:30 pm

We weren’t going to win this 1-0…just move on. Let’s get our bats going.

  172. Stuart

    October 29, 2009 at 9:30 pm

they are starting to hit arod hard, and this field is not big enough to keep them in. i have a feeling this game is about to turn bad.

  173. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 9:30 pm

Well i guess you can’t keep Teixeria down for ever. Damn no run support for Pedro again

  174. HotDogs

    October 29, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Everybody……focus now…..focus! Focus Pedro! Listen to Chooch! Let’s Go Phillies!

  179. ChesapeakePhan

    October 29, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Pedro and Burnett are just about dead even in every stat so far. They are even within 2 pitches of each other (75 for Pedro, 73 for AJ).

  180. Tracey

    October 29, 2009 at 9:37 pm

OK, we kept them down to one run. Now let’s show them what the bottom of the order can do!

  181. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Come on Feliz, start us off right. Give us something to work with. Please.

  182. Mostone

  184. Keith

    Feliz just sucks this postseason

  185. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Agreed. Pedro has so far pitched well but he has only pitched 4 innings so far. Let’s see if he can give us 2 more. Hopefully we can get a lead back.

  186. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 9:41 pm

    alright Ruiz!

  200. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Seems like we all very seriously underestimated what Burnett was going to bring to the table tonight. That and our top two hitters in the order are not exercising that much patience.

  201. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 9:46 pm

    well that sucked

  202. Whizwithout

    October 29, 2009 at 9:46 pm

leaving too many runners in scoring position and its getting frustrating

  203. Stuart

    October 29, 2009 at 9:47 pm

why are swinging at so many first pitches? one reason we chase pitches so fast is we usually make them work. only a few at bats tonight we have made them work. most of the other time we have been swinging at first or second pitch.

  204. GWFightinsFan

    October 29, 2009 at 9:47 pm

They’re playing right into Burnett’s hands by chasing that crap…settle down boys!!

    way to go Pedro

  217. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Do you consider this a successful night for Pedro? If he only lasted 5 but gave up 1 run but gave his team a chance to win?

  218. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 9:55 pm

paranormal activity is not scary, it’s boring.

  219. HotDogs

    October 29, 2009 at 9:56 pm

  223. Mostone

    October 29, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Man oh man, we need some offense! Maybe we’ll get it against their bullpen.

  224. Terri

    October 29, 2009 at 10:02 pm

This game is like Pedro’s last start against the dodgers. Where our offense fail to give Pedro some run support and the BP blew the game. Someone is going to score soon.

  225. Stuart

    October 29, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Ever since Werth was picked off we have looked bad. we lost all energy and yankees have gained a bit.

  226. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 10:02 pm

paranormal activity was awful. We absolutely have to win tonight. I have no confidence in Hamels winning game 3.

  227. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Man Burnett is hanging curveballs all over the place….Howard is being to patient

  228. joedad

    October 29, 2009 at 10:03 pm

There must be a magnet over the outside corner, or just off it. Very much like the Padilla game in LA, everything on the corners.

  229. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 10:04 pm

    I agree Ed R.

  230. AC from NJ

    October 29, 2009 at 10:04 pm

let’s hope pedro gets some first pitch strikes this inning. not so thrilled by this ump either – couple of bad calls last inning during Howard’s AB.

  231. HotDogs

    October 29, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Regarding Hamels….no negativity please. He needs our support. He knows he’s been shakey. He got us to the show last season. He needs good fan support if he is ever going to have a chance to pitch strong. And that is what we need from him. So Let’s Go Hamels!

  232. AC from NJ

can Ibanez, Stairs, and well umm possibly Feliz

  252. Terri

    October 29, 2009 at 10:12 pm

the worse part is that he had 2 strikes on him. this game is still on our offense. we need to score in this inning, cause I can see Mariano Rivera coming in the 8th

  253. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 10:13 pm

    oops

possibly do something this inning? let’s go!

  254. joedad

    RRRRAAAAAUUUUULLLLL!

  258. AC from NJ

    October 29, 2009 at 10:15 pm

burnett has gotten a lot of borderline calls tonite. his curve is very good, but the ump has given him more…

  259. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 10:16 pm

yeah Burnett’s two seamer looks good tonight but other than that they need to be a bit more aggressive because the ump’s corners are generous tonight.

  260. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 10:16 pm

gees we look bad, come on Phillies!

  261. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 10:16 pm

I totally said Rivera would go two innings tonight if they had the lead. I just knew it.

  262. poomie

    October 29, 2009 at 10:17 pm

think positive! they never give up, high hopes! they can do it!

  263. Keith

    9 Ks for Burnett now

  264. Stuart

    October 29, 2009 at 10:17 pm

they keep calling that pitch a strike but its not. they wont even show the pitch tracker because they know its a ball. every single damn time.

    come on Feliz!

  266. Chuckles

Let’s go Phillies ! WE GOTTA BELIEVE!

  270. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 10:19 pm

    well that wasn’t likely

  271. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 10:19 pm

I think it is a strike. Every one of those pitches are on the black, absolutely strikes.

Truthfully, what Burnett has done tonight is as impressive as what Lee did last night when you consider how much pressure is on the Yanks right now.

  272. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Ruiz-Rollins-Victorino better do a lot better

  273. HotDogs

    October 29, 2009 at 10:20 pm

Burnett = Understimated. But not unbeatable. And can someone just try swinging at that curveball on the corner JUST to see what might happen? Especially on a 2 strike count!

  274. AC from NJ

    October 29, 2009 at 10:21 pm

man, i hate to say it…but gotta give burnett his due.

he’s up to 108 pitches. i wonder if Girardi is bringing him out again for the 8th.

I’m still not worried – our big bats come up one more time, and if we beat Broxton we can beat Mariano Rivera.

  275. Stuart

    October 29, 2009 at 10:22 pm

we cant let them get another. we have to keep it a one run game.

  276. ChesapeakePhan

    October 29, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Burnett is pitching really, really well. Pedro hasn’t been shabby either.

  277. Keith

    October 29, 2009 at 10:23 pm

yes Rivera is not perfect, he gives up hits and runs so why not tonight?

  278. j reed

    October 29, 2009 at 10:23 pm

ED R. – I agree…that why they needed to be aggressive…but Burnett stuff doesn’t looks nearly as nasty as Lee’s last night. We just haven’t adjusted.

  279. Matt

    October 29, 2009 at 10:23 pm

@Stuart-Agreed, and now we get to face Rivera for the next 2 innings…

  280. GWFightinsFan

    October 29, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Wow i’m surprised they’re leaving Pedro in

  281. Ed R.

    October 29, 2009 at 10:26 pm

I agree, this line up has not adjusted at all. They look completely baffled and Burnett’s stuff is not that great tonight. It’s good absolutely but not great.

This is why I hate Charlie. He takes him out in LA but leaves him in NY. He should of never started this inning. They Yankees were hitting him. He did his job and hill billy leaves him in.

I’ve gotta admit, I laughed at how slowly Pedro walked off the diamond, smiling at the boos.

  300. joedad

    October 29, 2009 at 10:32 pm

guys,Burnett pitched the game of his life. He wasn’t compelled to challenge anyone so he stayed on the corners or just off. He had goos stuff

  301. Jeff

    October 29, 2009 at 10:32 pm

You had guys warming up. You go lefty righty and we would of been fine. Now down 2 its over with MO.

Alright maybe this will piss off the Phillies enough to do something….yeah Charlie made a bad decision with leaving pedro in for that inning…now Pedro has to leave too a bunch of boos for a stellar performance

  306. AC from NJ

Can’t blame charlie – pedro’s been pitching well and he was facing the bottom of the Yankees lineup. it’s the offense that has failed us big time tonite.

  307. Matt

    October 29, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Wow, seriously guys? Talking about how it’s over, we’re going back to Philly with the series tied, etc.? Have some faith, Mo has blown saves before in the big time, he can do it again.

  327. Matt

    October 29, 2009 at 10:42 pm

@Jeff-BS. Pedro wasn’t showing any signs of fatigue, and there was no obvious reason to pull him. Facing the bottom of the order, he’d gone 6 innings giving up just 2 runs and he had looked good. Charlie didn’t cost us the game. I mean, is the game over yet? Last I looked, we’re in the 7th inning, down by 2. How many times have you seen this team come back? We’ve seen Rivera blow saves, and we’ve seen the Phillies come back from down by more than 2 entering the 8th inning. Relax. Damn.

It’s funny, NY and their fans keep saying that Philly and its fans are classless, yet the NY Times puts out articles poking fun at the players and various trolls come onto this site and don’t just make posts but make comments about players, use derogatory names for their user name and all around act like the very things they curse Philly fan’s for being.

If Phillies fans are classless then consider me proud to be a phillies fan.

If the Yankees hold on and win, the Phillies will have done what any road team in the World Series must to do stay alive in the series – they split the first two games on the road. Given the said scenario, the Phillies would return home with a series split. The edge, arguably, then goes to the Phillies once they’re back in Citizen’s Bank Park. If the Phillies lose tonight, they’d still be in a great position to take the series.

Frankly, I don’t care who wins this World Series. I just hope that a fastball “accidentally” lands on Jimmy Rollins’ mouth. A dislocated or broken jaw would keep him from talking anymore bullshit.

those 2 decisions proBably cost the phillies this gAME.

I agree, and I can’t believe I am saying this, with the Met’s fan. I really do wish Jimmy would quit while he is ahead and just shut his mouth. He is bound to get it wrong sometime and I was really hoping he would not make any predictions on who would win this series but alas he did not.

Well we made Rivera throw a lot of pitches, and showed ourselves that he can be gotten to.

Good game – A.J. pitched out of his mind and got the corners all night. This is definitely quite a series. While the umps were quite generous to Rivera, the Phils offense just couldn’t get it done.

1-1, just the way the Phils like it. Back to Philly for three! Let’s hope we take it in 5!

I didn’t want to mention it until now, but Manuel going with Martinez tonight was pretty Gdam stupid. I’m not saying he pitched Horrible but hes not a #2 guy…Atleast not on this team. Hamels should of pitched this game. Hes our #2 guy…Who cares if hes had a bad post season so far…Thats why he gets what he gets paid, and why Pedro only got 1 mil this season

I have faith in Cole Hamels in Game 3. And the offense against Pettite. Keep the Faith.

ChrisI: relax. if Hamels is #2 guy, be happy he’s pitching in Game 3 now.

BTW, AJ Burnett won’t do this twice in a row…

Yeah Burnett had a decent two seamer, a few decent curveballs and pitched with conviction but we were too patient and could have punished him on some of those first strike cookies he put up there. We didn’t adjust to the strike zone which I thought was pretty consistent and Burnett wasn’t really mixing it up all that much but he made the most out of what he had. Howard really was taking pitches that were too borderline . I do think it’ll be like Padilla, now that we’ve seen it and can look back at his pitch patterns we’ll nail him to the wall. He won’t be getting away with some of those hangers. A Rivera I feel much better about. He did get a call but so did we the innig prior, but that being said we nail him to the next unless Feliz is the final AB. Lets Hope Hamels shows up. Pedro what a great performance nothing to be ashamed of….

Chris I – Hamels hasn’t pitched like a #2 at all in the playoffs. I’ll give him the game his wife went into labor, but he has not risen the occasion since. Pedro pitched a gem…that HR by Matsui was like UT’s first one last night…that was a Yankee stadium gift.

WOW now i have heard everything phillies fans complaining about the size of a ballpark…its only not fair when its your team hitting the homeruns….did you see utley’s first home run yesterday

Manny – watch the post game on CSN…they gave a good explaination…it was a give and take type of thing…if Utley had struck out then Rollins would have been caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd. I hope the line-up will make some in game adjustments with Petite. Work counts when the pitcher is struggling and know when to be aggressive. They shouldn’t have been taking so many pitches a second time thru the line-up…I mean that was the time to be more aggressive…too many 1-2 counts leaves you vulnerable.
