Gameday 2009

World Series Gameday: Yankees At Phillies, Game 4

YankeesNew York Yankees (2-1) at Philadelphia Phillies (1-2)

CC Sabathia, LHP, vs. Joe Blanton, RHP

Time: 8:20 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 56 degrees
TV: FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies must even up the series after dropping last night’s game.  Joe Blanton and the Phillies need to do whatever it takes to avoid falling to a 3-1 deficit.

Instead of throwing out Cliff Lee on three day’s of rest, Charlie Manuel opted to go with Blanton.  Blanton last started in the National League Championship series and he allowed three earned runs in six innings.  Blanton has struggled mightily against the Yankees throughout his career, but has not faced them since last season.  The Phillies are in desperate need of a solid outing from Blanton, especially with Cole Hamels’ poor performance last night.

For the second time this postseason, CC Sabathia will pitch on short rest.  The 280-pound left-hander threw 113 pitches in game one of the World Series.  Sabathia pitched well, but was out-dueled by Lee and could not find a way to get Chase Utley out.

The offense is a big reason why the Phillies are in the World Series, but they are also a big reason why they are trailing 2-1.  They have faced great pitching, but the Phillies are more than capable of putting up crooked numbers.  Other than Utley in game one, the only players who are doing well are Jayson Werth (.400) and Carlos Ruiz (.333).

Tröegs Hopback Amber AleYour Gameday Beer – Tröegs Hopback Amber Ale
I’m surprised we didn’t recommended this beer during our summer of Amber Ales, but it is appropriate tonight as the Phillies need to hop back on the winning train. As advertised, this brew is loaded with citrusy hops, which accompany a pine, grass-like scent. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick and dry but full of flavor sensations. If you like the flavors of Pale Ales but not the bitterness, then this beer is worth a go. Have it with some grilled salmon seasoned with lemon. – By Brian

I am trying not to feel too pessimistic about tonight. Joe’s numbers against the Yankees have historically been bad, but CC does not like to pitch in Philly… The Phils must score early and get run support for Joe. I have learned to never doubt this team, but if the Phils lose tonight, it’s just about over. GO PHILLIES!

    Lets go phils.
Glad the starting pitcher tonight earned it in the regular season.
I like that the media thinks the old man is stupid for not going with lee.
I predict pitching CC and bruntett on short rest will backfire.

Al in Seattle – my thoughts exactly.

    andrew –

well i thought the ‘old man’ was misguided when he left pedro in 1 inning too many in gm2, & did not run vic and jroll against mariano

not to mention why would use bruntlett as your RH pinch hitter

  5. Andrew

    November 1, 2009 at 8:10 pm

If you want to see my problem with the old man check the cole hamels thread LOL
I had to vent that. I am so upset about it all.

    BUT
This isnt over. I think the phils will still win this. It will be sweeter to come from befind too.

Blanton needs to keep the ball down, change speeds and limit the damage. The offense needs to be patient, wear down Fat Bastard and get to the bullpen. They are once again a big underdog so let’s hope this ignites the final afterburners of the season and they take their rightful place as repeat champions.

The thing about the A-Rod double is simple. The umps made up a ground rule that anything that hits a camera is a home run. Their reasoning behind it is that they do not control what the cameraman does with the camera. That reasoning is a lie. They do control what the camerman does with the camera, they are moving him back for game 4 and they also control what the cameraman does with the camera by having instant replay. Instant replay can check to see where the camerman is, the umps don’t need to make up a ground rule about cameras. That ground rule that the umps made up is inconsistent with having instant replay. And they used the instant replay to uphold a bogus rule that should only be in effect when they do not have instant replay. That is why the call is bogus.

  8. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:17 pm

The ground rule that the umps made up is inconsistent with having instant replay. The rule states that any ball hitting a camera is a home run because the umps do not control the camerman. That is only true when the umps do not have instant replay. Because the umps have instant replay their reasoning behind the ground rule is a lie and the ground rule is illegal.

  9. Andrew

    November 1, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Yea Michael Jack we get that. did you expect or do you expect the phillies to get any close calls? not a chance. this is the greatest team ever assembled they are playing. Its an honor to just lose to them.
Sarcasm there but if you listened to what the media is saying youd believe that. we arent going to get any close calls accept that.

  10. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Its not about close calls. Its about using instant replay and its effect on the ground rule. With instant replay there is no need for a ball hitting a camera to be a home run. And they used the instant replay to uphold the ground rule that is only made when there is no instant replay.

  11. Harry Kalas

    November 1, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Avoid the free passes. Pitch inside, way inside to A-Rod. Use your breaking pitches (which are levels above Cole’s Mom Jeans curve ball) in the right spots. Keep the pitch count down thru the 1st 2-3 innings and we have a shot. That’s not asking a lot. .It’s what a starting pitcher is suppose do, but my only concern is how much of a rythm he’ll be in do to his limited use. He hasn’t pitched in days….. Hey if the Eagles can completely thrash the Giants 40-17(Sorry Jeff) anything is possible. Win tonite and it’s on.

  12. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Its not about the Yankees getting calls, or not expecting to get any. It is about baseball’s use of instant replay which is supposed to help the game. They used the instant replay to uphold a ground rule that is only made when the umps do not have access to instant replay. The rule is bogus. A call is a questionable judgement either way. This was not a judgement call. It was an illegal ground rule when considereng what the effects of instant replay are.

  13. Andrew

    November 1, 2009 at 8:23 pm

They cheated. They will continue to cheat. I am not arguing. Have to overcome the yankees and the league and the umps. Is this something new though?

  14. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Yes it is something new because how they went about it. Instant replay is supposed to help baseball. They misused the advantages of instant replay when they are supposed to be using it to make the correct calls. They didn’t use it to make a correct call. They used it to uphold a groud rule which is put in place when the umps do not have access to instant replay.

  15. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:30 pm

The reasoning behind the ground rule is only valid when the umps do not have access to instant replay. If they do not have access to instant replay they cannot control what the camerman does. If they do have access to instant replay they can control what the cameraman does by checking the instant replay to make the correct call. Because the reasoning behind the ground rule was invalid the ground rule is illegal, because they used instant replay to uphold it, a clear contradiction.

  16. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:34 pm

The umps are saying they don’t control the cameraman, and they use instant replay to uphold the ground rule. That is a clear contradiction. Of course they have control of the camerman, they can check with instant replay. The ground rule is illegal because they used instant replay to uphold it.

  17. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:35 pm

What do you think instant replay is? It is control of the cameraman because they can always check the replay to find out exactly where the camerman is. The umps are claiming they don’t have control of the cameras, then use the cameras to uphold that rule.

  18. Andrew

    November 1, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Im off to watch the game. Believe it or not I give all positive while i watch te games. Thats why i blasted Cole on here. Had to vent.
Good luck to the phils and all you great phillies fans.

  19. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:42 pm

The umps are saying in their reasoning that they don’t have instant replay so they will count any ball that hits a camera as a home run. Why? Because they don’t control the camers. They do control the cameras, they have instant replay. The reasoning is invalid and the rule is illegal.

  21. Mike Schmidt

    November 1, 2009 at 8:52 pm

By using instant replay the umps proved they do have control over the cameras. The ground rule is invalid and illegal.

Right guys, lets not lose hope! If they can pull out a win tonight, then we have Lee pitching tomorrow, which should be considered an advantage, and gives us a good chance to go AHEAD in the series! Remember, most of us thought this would be a long series anyhow, and after all someone had to win Game 3, of course it wasnt who we wanted it to be, but hey, this team has been in tough spots before, and came through, and I think they can do it again.

    Its not the right call
I read the comments on phight blog, but nobody is stating it the way I am stating it. Gerry Davis said they do not control the cameras so they made the ground rule. They do control the cameras that is what instant replay is.
    Instant replay=control of cameras
    Rule is illegal.

Not every camera in the stadium is used for instant replay. Most are used for tv coverage and since tv coverage for these games is run by Fox and instant replay is run by MLB, MLB clearly does not control all the camera’s. It was a home run. Period. End of story. Let’s worry about tonight. Yesterday is over.

    Stop swinging! Just stop!!!!!!!
He can NOT do any worse than these ugly strike outs that’s probably getting into his head at this point.

  108. Harry Kalas

    November 1, 2009 at 9:58 pm

The xtra lefties in lineup only is a problem when Howard struggles like this. Which has not been very often in the 2nd half. The more glaring mistake perhaps is Charlie’s mis-use both Blanton/Happ in the post season season. The usual Blanton would be throwing 3-5 mph faster right now. The BP by commt. strategy(I’m aware of the BP issues) has finally caught up to us in the WS.

  109. Tim L

Blanton usually settles in after the first two, so he appears to be on track.
Ryan and Raul need to get on track or this is going to be too steep a hill to climb.

  210. Ed R.

Actually, once the umpire signals, then the Yanks can’t challenge it.

If a guy misses the base on a play like that where a call by the umpire has to be made then once the call is made its over.

Now if a guy is rounding a base and going to another then clearly there is no call made by the ump and then you can challenge before throwing the next pitch.

  211. AC in NJ

    November 1, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Alright – back to even!! But Phils are doing great, cause Sabathia is now up to 66 pitches and top of the order is coming up again. Meanwhile, Joe B. is only at 44 pitches, so this top of the 5th (against bottom of Yankees lineup) is critical. Keep it even now, and I got a good feeling about what’s coming next!

Soon as Damon gets on, Lights On should have been out. But, Cholly is going to be loyal to his guy. How about being loyal to the other 27 guys on the team and the fans, Cholly? And, WTF with Ibanez…you have Francisco on the team for games against tough lefties. But, again, Cholly’s going to be loyal to his guy. What did Ibanez do? Completely sucked. Again. But, this team has really beaten themselves the last two nights and it’s been gut wrenching to watch. I really don’t know if I can stomach tomorrow night…

I knew their run would one day come to an end. No one wins forever. I just didn’t think it would come so soon….

  499. Jeff of Nova

    November 2, 2009 at 1:12 am

As far as hitting goes, this team has been streaky all year. Unfortunately they are in a funk streak at the wrong time.

tonight as I stated before is not more on some really bad managerial decisions.

It needs to be noted that Giradi has out managed Manuel hands down in this series.

Congrats Yankees, maybe we will take it to 6 but I am sure Lee will come down to earth tomorrow since the Yankees are hot!

Even if Lee puts in a game 1 performance, and lets say Pedro pitches lights out in NY, no way Hamels wins a game 7 in any stadium on this planet!

Some many chances wasted, really crappy managerial decisions made, pitching inconsistent after Lee.

Cholly should get the Jeltz award. Lidge was not bad, he was dealing till, Cholly puts the overshift, and Damon being a vet, played it right stole 2nd and kept going cause no one was there. That is on the person deciding to over shift for a guy who hadn’t hit a ball all night. With Damon at 3rd Lidge couldn’t throw the slider, that is his bread and butter knew it was over at that point.

I wanna freaking kick him in the head for that bonehead blunder

You guys are a very good team. We hit better in clutch spots. Howard and Raul never showed for you guys. Your bullpen is a complete mess. Need to change things there. I would get rid of Hamels. Dont like his makeup. You need a new closer. Not pitching Lee was a big mistake. I really thought we would lose with him going three games in this series. Now it really doesnt matter if he wins or not.

  503. AC in NJ

    November 2, 2009 at 1:15 am

Totally agree with Scott in DC – Lidge was a literally 1 inch away from the strike out…not sure if Ruiz had it or it bounced, but sure was close.

All I can say is let’s hope Cliff Lee has another gem in him tomorrow night and get this series back to NY. I don’t want to watch Team Steroids celebrate on the CBP Field.

I know its cliche, but really just take it one game at a time. If Phils can get it to Game 7, there will be a TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PRESSURE on the Yankees. Frankly, I don’t think CC on another short rest will be able to handle that pressure – many times tonite he looked like he didn’t want to be out there.

Yankee Mike – are u a Giants fan too? (Even if you’re not, you’re definitely a douchebag troll).

I thought Brad Lidge was back. 2 outs, were nice. had to turn off the radio and walk into work and I was commenting that Lidge SUCKED in the regular season, but has been AWESOME in the post season. Rivlez,

    You Are an F—ing Idiot!

Howard and Ibanez are 2 of the best hitters in the game!

They are slumping and struggling against lefties, but if ARod didin’t get plunked 2x he may still be in the same funk.

The Phillies have no more questions than the Yankees. The Yankees are playing well when it counts. They have questions too, like Joba and Hughes and their long bomb problems.

The Phillies are struggling, they will go out tomorrow and hope to extend it!

If you have something useful to say, say it, don’t speak out your ass !

Well, that’s better Yankee Doodle Dandy but it still is over yet. It’s unlikely that we can pull it off but the 3 day rest rotation might just catch up to Burnett and more importantly Petite. Many Phillies fans would agree with you that Manuel doesn’t get pitchers and neither does the overated pitching coach Dubee…he lousy consel for Manuel. Your team doesn’t make many mistakes and neither does ours normally but the Utley error will probably haunt me for awhile. I still think we go to seven games.

The phillies were one strike away from putting some big time pressure on our team. With lee going we could of been going back 3-2 down. phillies had a great year and defended there crown.

  518. yankee mike

    November 2, 2009 at 1:23 am

No, Brian, you are wrong. Us Yankee fans are the most classless in baseball. But we cover it up by talking about how classless Philly, Boston and Mets fans are. But anybody who has ever spent any time with us knows we are the most classless. We also love our classless players like A-Roid, Joba and C.C. We also think we play for the team. And we ignore the fact that many of our players have been busted for steroids. We still love Roger Clemens and Jason Giambi even though they were on steroids. We also love they fact that a park was destroyed to build our giant stadium that is a knock off of the Vet/3 Rivers and Riverfront.

  519. Brian of CO

    November 2, 2009 at 1:24 am

speaking of A-Roid getting plunked, what a freakin cry baby. With the amount of steroids in his body, he will kill you if you pitch anywhere but inside, so the Phillies were forced to pitch him inside. The Phillies didnt intentionally hit him, but they intentionally pitched him inside to try to get him to bite on a bad pitch, but they pitched too far inside. The Phillies had NO choice but to pitch to A-Roid inside, just pitched a little too far inside.

I am starting to think that the Yankees fans might just be the worst in MLB. Worse then the Mets and the Dodgers. thats bad. Yankees fans (except yankee doodle dandy) are the worst fair weather sore winners. The Phillies are playing like crap over all. Thats it. The Yankees should be winning the WS, and really with how much money they spent to buy this Championship they should be embarrased that they didnt sweep every team thus far. The Phillies won game one (pretty easily) lost game 2 because the offense fell asleep) lost game 3 because Cole Hamels has sucked all year (didnt choke, because he has sucked all year with the exception of 5 starts) and lost tonight because Lidge went back to his regular season crap instead of what he did the rest of the post season. Oh well. crap happens, but there is nothing worse than a sore winner.

  525. Yankee Doodle Dandy

    November 2, 2009 at 1:32 am

STOP WITH ALL THE BULL TRASH TALK. Its not even fun. The Phillies are a great team. We got a little better clutch hitting in this series. I think our pitching outside of Lee is much better. I would take any of your outfielders over ours. I do not like Rollins. I think Jeter is a much more clutch player. These Yankee fans here are the reason we get a bad name.

  531. Brian of CO

    November 2, 2009 at 1:38 am

you would be correct Yankee Doodle Dandy in all respects. The Phillies are a great team, the Yankees are as well, the exact reason the Phillies are in the 2nd straight World Series. The Phillies are sucking again in clutch situation, the Yankees are not. As for “steriod lovin’ trolls”. Well A-Roid yes, but beyond A-Roid being a steroid freak, and Jobe the Hut Chamberlien being annoying as hell with every out he gets, the Yankees are far different from BRONX BABY, and yankee mike, and some of the idiot trolls on here. They are a pretty good bunch, and not really like some of their fans (classless). They at least try to give a good name to NY, its just the trolls ruin it for them.
