The Truck is Loaded; Spring Training is Down the Road

19153_323578797572_7737967572_4492763_1013886_nA large moving van was filled to the brim with gum, helmets, cups, and the spirit of Spring Training.  It will travel 1,089 miles from Citizens Bank Way to Old Coachman Road in Clearwater, Florida. They will unload the contents upon arrival at Bright House Networks Field and with that a new year will commence.

There will be no snow, no shovels, no digging out from Snowzilla, or whatever they called it.  What there will be is sun, plush grass, and a fresh opportunity to once again reign supreme.  There will be a Halladay, a Hamels, and a Happ.  There will be a skinnier Charlie, a wealthier Shane, and a healthier (hopefully) Lidge. There will be baseball.

And baseball begins in just six days.

It was the longest *%*#^ January ever – with all this snow, I imagine February will also crawl like a snail as we lumber into March –

I really want to go down one year… with three little ones it’s virtually impossible but maybe when they get a little older.

I will be down in Florida the week of March 20. This is my 4th year in a row for Phillies spring training. My parents live in Port St. Lucie (where the Muts train) so I want to spend time with them, but otherwise, here is my itinerary: I am going to Yanks v Phils in Clearwater on 3/22, Phils v Rays in Port Charlotte on 3/23, Cards v Orioles in Jupiter on 3/24, and Yanks v Orioles on 3/25 in Fort Lauderdale. You may have noted I am an Orioles fan – Yes a Baltimoron and an Orioles fan – what can I say, I grew up in Balmor’ when the Orioles were a powerhouse – Hun’ ;^)

    GO PHILLIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!

A sure sign that the winter will someday end. I get to watch news of the equipment getting to Clearwater and start seedlings for the garden on the same weekend. Spring is coming, and it can’t come fast enough.

Now that I said that, it will surely snow until mid-April. 🙁

Mike, you mentioned the Orioles in the late 60’s early 70’s (I grew up in Towson and went to many an Orioles games). The great teams are forever remembered by the key personnel and character that put them on the top for a few years. The Orioles had the Robinson boys great pitching and a bench. The A’s were considered a nasty bunch that did not get along but won with attitude. Of course you have the ‘Family’ Pirates and the Big Red Machine.
What will the Phils be remembered for?
    Great hitting, terrific pitching?

looking at the new schedule through all the boring snow, lots of good games this season. @ fenway and then @ yankee stadium, host the twins and indians at home, I like out interleague play this year.

more importantly, im booking my tickets in advance for the biggest phils game of the 2010 year- Roy Halladay bobblehead night

Safeco sells partial season plans with an option for those who purchase to kick in an additional $90 for all the chochkeez (bobble heads, etc) that are targeted for promotion.
Nice idea. Phils should consider that one.

34 days until I’m in Clearwater for 5 games. Can’t frickin’ wait. Only downside this year is I won’t be down there for St. Patrick’s day.

Will be down there for two weeks again…..Our daughter and husband live in Tarpon Springs, 20 minutes north of the complex…..Been going down now for ten years…..The best part is the day time practices, you can catch the A, AA, AAA teams playing during the day, with the major league guys that need extra work also taking part. Have watched Utley, Howard and all the guys that came up thru our system. Last year i spent a lot of time watching Taylor and Marson, thinking they would be the next guys to come up to the bigs. This years kids will be a crapshoot in who to spend time watching intendly…..Will keep you all posted when i return.

The Dipsy is going to Clearwater! Can someone help me with some fishing tips, surf or boat, in the area. Any recommendations on boats or captains? Looking forward to it. I think that 1967-1977 are possibly the greatest years for World Series teams ever: Gibson’s Cards, Yaz’s Sox, Mickey Lolich and the Tigers, the Miracle Mets. The great teams: The O’s, The A’s, and my favorite as a kid, The Big Red Machine. If you look at the offense of that Reds team it will blow your mind. The years Ken Griffey had. The Phils legacy? I think the Phils will eventually be remembered as Chase Utley’s team, more or less. But who knows? Its not over. Still more to do. This year, barring injury, could be that super year. A 100 win season. But watch out for those Braves.

    Jimmy Rollins prediction update:
Saw this on comcast sportsnet last night. He said that Roy Halladay would win 20 games. That’s it? No we’ll win 100 games or anything? Oh well. Guess it’s good to see he’s steering away from the predictions. He only made this one cuz Marshall Harris somewhat pressured him into it.

    February 13, 2010 at 11:04 am

I like your thought process there Dipsy –
Not sure if I would agree the team is Chase’s though. Good talking point. I say both Rollins and Howard have contributed as much. Rollins is the sparkplug. When he is on the Phils find a way to win. Of course when Ryan is on, the team is unbeatable.

  23. The Second John

    February 13, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Dipsy, I agree this team will be known as Chase’s team downs the road. Ryan is probably not gonna stick around long enough, and the only other person I can think of is J-Roll. Chase is better than J-Roll, so yeah I think this is gonna be Chase’s team eventually.

Funny tidbit- Couple of weeks back my cousin was in NYC and I cruelly made him go into every sports store in lower Manhattan trying to get me a Halladay tee… He got more dirty looks than a hooker in a church.

Can you believe we have Roy Halladay??? Forget the drama can you believe we can say that???

    February 14, 2010 at 7:45 am

Can anyone help me and recommend me a site to buy a Majestic Roy Halladay tee with the name and number on back that has cheap international shipping or a UK based site/shop if there are other Phils fans from the UK on here…

Desperate to get one before the season opens and replace my beloved Burrell one…

Can’t wait for Spring Training to get started! February is by far the most boring sports month and with the Phils hopefully winning 100 games this year (and the Mets maybe losing 100?) it’s gonna be a fun summer!

    February 14, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Do the Mets have a catcher yet? Do they have more than one pitcher? It seems like just yesterday that the Mets fans were on this site bragging and really putting the Phillies and their fans down….My, how times have changed…Can’t wait for spring training to start
