What a difference a homestand makes. After April closed with plenty of questions about the Phillies’ starting rotation and bullpen, May has provided some welcome answers. Since losing the first game of a 10-game stay at Citizens Bank Park on April 30, the Phillies have won seven of their past nine games, a charge led by steady arms in the bullpen and consistent performances from the entire rotation.

Perhaps the best result from the homestand was that every pitcher had at least some success – including today’s starter, Kyle Kendrick, who shut out the potent Cardinals for seven innings on Wednesday after a shaky five innings in a loss to the Mets that started the 10-game stretch. With J.A. Happ still a ways off from returning, Joe Blanton needing a few starts to get up to speed after coming off the disabled list and Cole Hamels a toss-up from one start to the next, Kendrick’s importance to the rotation cannot be underestimated.

As for the lineup, what happened to Ryan Howard’s power? After homering in the first two games of the season, the Big Piece or Big N’ Tasty or whatever they’re calling him these days has only three blasts in the 29 games since. No matter how you look at it, Howard’s power is lagging, as is his run production overall, with only three RBIs this month. If there’s one thing that could help it’s a trip into the thin air of Coors Field – though Howard (and the lineup as a whole) historically hits better in hotter weather, and the game-time temperature for today’s and tomorrow’s games will be in the 50s, with Wednesday’s in the 40s and snow in the forecast. Certainly not what Charlie Manuel calls “hittin’ weather.”

Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino (CF), Polanco (3B), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Ruiz (C), Valdez (SS), Kendrick (P)

Coors OriginalYour Gameday Beer – Coors Original

In the spirit of this chilly, mile-high series, sip on a can of original Coors as you witness the Phillies hit the road. The “Banquet Beer,” as it’s known, is 5 percent ABV and is the oldest of the Coors beers. Buy a six-pack, eat some steak and potatoes with it, and be sure to dispose of the cans by stepping on them, just as the Phils will do to the Rockies tonight. – By Pat

GO PHILLIES!

Sorry but the Flyers are done tonight. Anyway who cares about hockey. A winter sport playing in the summer. Its basically who gets the hottest goalie in the playoffs. Thats what it comes down to. Baseball is all we need right now. I do not get one thing. I love the phillies but after that I am a giants fan. Why does most of Philly hate Mcnabb. All this guy did here was win year after year. Granted he cant run like he once did. He is classy and a good role model for kids. When he got a big time wide out in TO he took the team to the Superbowl. Now you have fans killing him and players. Jackson should shut his big mouth. He has done nothing so far. Punk. Now with a backup throwing to him he will miss Mcnabb. As a Giants fan its on Reid. He is a horrible coach in big games. We saw him make bad calls in the superbowl and in the past few seasons. Get rid of him. They bring in Vic. God just should of left Mcnabb alone. Guy is a future hall of fame player. I am just mad that he is still in the NFC East.

Ok I can’t take it anymore….Wilson Valdez is god awful at the plate. He has now grounded into a double play in four consecutive games and I don’t think any of the DP’s were even remotely close plays.

The guy played for the Mets last year and I am beginning to think that he is a secret agent for the Mets whose goal is to kill as many offensive innings as he can.

I can’t believe I am saying this but, I can’t wait to get Juan Castro back.

  15. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 10:00 pm

    I’d take Bruntlett over Valdez!

  16. AGH

    May 10, 2010 at 10:06 pm

    WILSON VALDEZ’S REMARKABLE RUN:
Through the 4th inning of this game….
He is 2 for his last 18 for a .111 average
He has grounded into a double play in 6 CONSECUTIVE GAMES
During that stretch he is responsible for 22 outs or nearly 20% of the team’s outs FROM THE 8 HOLE.

There has to be a record for ineptitude in there somewhere.

  17. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:21 pm

  39. Scott in D.C.

I would’ve ph’d for Kendrick … But then, Ross Gload hasn’t exactly instilled a lot of confidence in that role.

  40. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:41 pm

Mulvi, that MLBTV app for the PS3 *almost* made me buy one… seems like a great deal and roughly 80 bucks cheaper than Extra Innings… and I think ALL games are on HD.

Maybe I’ll get it next year…

  41. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 10:42 pm

You get a little delay in the feed, but all the games are HD and it’s cheaper than the Extra Innings. Also PS3 is great from streaming Netflix.

  42. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:43 pm

These Rockies announcers are so effin boring…

  43. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Yea, I can’t believe this Extra Innings BS.. it’s 2010 and they still have just one or two games on HD per day… everything else is not-HD…which blows now that my eye has been HD-trained.

  44. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I hardly watch anything not in HD, it really spoils you.

  45. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Ok guys, we got a game with the Rockies tonight. And that only means one thing. Bad news for the Rockies.

  46. Brian Michael

    May 10, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Yea, there’s no reason all these games can’t be in HD. Plus we should have the option of which broadcast to watch…especially when you have Comcast outside of Philly.

  47. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:49 pm

We’re back on top thanks to another Shane triple and a wild pitch…

  48. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 10:49 pm

My dad has Extra Innings, it stinks that only one or two are HD. I like the MLB on the PS3 because I can choose which feed I’m watching.

  49. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Yea Brian… that’s why the PS3 option is so appealing.. all games on HD and if you pay $20 bucks extra you can choose your feed (home or away)…

I’m so fed up with watching half of the Phillies games via the other team’s feed. Takes a lot from the whole experience.

  50. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Beat me to it, Mulvi haha

  51. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:52 pm

    WOW WILSON VALDEZ GTFO

  52. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Brian, I don’t see why the games that are on this other comcast channel aren’t shown on any satellite or cable station here in Lancaster. I’ve got hundreds of channels but no game.

  53. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 10:54 pm

What’d Valdez do? Am I driving you nuts yet?

  54. Manny

look like it never hit the ground

  56. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Polly should turn to Valdez and say “How many Gold Gloves do you have? Let me catch the f***ing ball!”

  57. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Oh man, I can’t stand not being able to see it…aaaaagghhhh!

  58. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Valdez and Polanco go for a pop up, when it looks like Polanco called it (waving his arms)… but Valdez catches it anyway and they slightly bump into each other… but when it looks like Valdez had actually made the catch, he fumbles the ball and it falls…

The umps called it safe…then out. In any case, it was some unnecessary drama.

  59. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I don’t mind baseball in SD, it is not too bad. But once you see hockey in HD, you can’t go back. Hockey benefits from HD more than any other sport/

  60. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Georgie, knowing how much you appreciate great defense, this is one play you would’ve HATED. haha

  61. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Chase is hitting over .300! Would be great to see him finish the season over .300 and perhaps winning a much deserved MVP award…

  62. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:01 pm

That’s true Manny, it would have ruined my image that our D is perfect! If I miss a really great defensive play though, I’ll be ticked.

  63. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 11:02 pm

Morris you are spot on, Hockey is the sport that comes alive in HD

  64. Georgie

Morris, hockey in HD is spectacular!

  65. Manny

    Two men on base…

  66. Jeff

GREAT GEORGIE. You are among the five people watching hockey.

  67. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Will Chase then say he’s the Most F#*kin Valuable Player?

  68. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:06 pm

    MFVP for sure.

  69. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Hockey not only benefits from the improved picture, that allows you to see the puck better. But the widescreen is great because you can see all of the other stuff happening on the ice. So much in hockey happens behind the play.

C’mon. You have to get a run off of Joe Bismal.

  70. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:07 pm

I can see the teeshirts now Manny.

  71. Mulvi

I think Most Valuable F***kin’ Player has a better ring

  72. Georgie

    Joe Pepto Bismal

  73. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:09 pm

HA! 2 outs… and they’re bringing in a RH reliever to face Chooch (who’s 3-for-3). Gotta love it.

  74. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:09 pm

I agree with that Mulvi, we’ll go with MVFP!

  75. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:10 pm

    Ditto.. MVFP!

  76. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Why don’t they walk Chooch and let Valdez ground out??

  77. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:12 pm

I think Chase would laugh at this conversation.

  78. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:12 pm

Valdez could someday be the first player to ever lead off an inning with a double play.

  79. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 11:13 pm

That’s a good question Manny! I have a question of my own. Why doesn’t Charlie just have Valdez bunt with runners on? It beats a double play!

  80. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:14 pm

And isn’t Valdez somewhat fast?? He could at least try to beat the throw when he bunts…

  81. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:18 pm

Frankly, if we win I could care less how well Valdez is hitting. But if his GIDPs end up costing us a couple of close games…..

  82. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:18 pm

I can’t really get on Valdez too much. He’s the third string SS, and has been playing good defense. But he just seems to have some horrible at-bats.

  83. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:18 pm

Whoops, remind me not to lean back in my chair, starting to nod….

  84. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:19 pm

I feel the same way, Buttermaker

  85. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Manny, I agree but if it’s a 1st and 3rd one out situation and Valdez up, I’d like to have just a little bit of confidence that they might get the ball out of the infield.

  86. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 11:21 pm

Anyways Valdez is out of options so when Jimmy comes back Valdez might get claimed off of waivers and we’ll never have to have another conversation like this.

  87. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:22 pm

That is true guys, he’s the 3rd stringer. hell, the Flyers had to pull a goalie out of the stands tonight….he had to run down and get dressed.

  88. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 11:23 pm

It was just a fat guy, they didn’t even give him pads. He was so drunk he didn’t feel the puck!

MVFP just turned a great GIDP!!

    Take note, Wilson.

  96. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Isn’t this game kinda slow? It’s almost 3 hrs and it’s the bottom 7th?

  97. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Oh, see, dammit, missed a great play..I’ll envision it.

  98. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:31 pm

JC got the first guy out, walked the 2nd guy, and then threw an 85 MPH pitch straight down the middle of the plate. And then a broken bat single to tie the game.

  99. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:32 pm

    Poor Valdez just got robbed…

  100. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:32 pm

I think anyone going to the games should have a “Chase for MVFP” sign.

  101. Georgie

    May 10, 2010 at 11:34 pm

JC seems to have lost it…..

  102. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:34 pm

It is a slow moving game, probably has a lot to do with the crap-tastic pitching by both teams.

  103. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:35 pm

I’ll give him a few more appearances before I make up my mind on Romero… he still hasn’t pitched consistently. I want to see him get into a groove.

  104. Manny

    HE DROPPED THE BALL!!!!!!!!!!!

  105. Morris Buttermaker

    What a great drop!

  106. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:39 pm

Polly should be at second. Time for Utley to come up big.

  107. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:39 pm

The Rockies really want to lose this game…

And it looks like we don’t really want to win it… Unless MVFP comes up now with a clutch hit to take the lead.

  108. Mulvi

    May 10, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Was that Kevin Curtis in right?

  109. Manny

    May 10, 2010 at 11:42 pm

Ughhhh…. At least we have Howard-Werth-Raul-Chooch for the ninth.

    Time for Baez to shine!

  110. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:43 pm

Kevin Curtis should have been nicknamed “White Thunder” instead of “White Lightning”. You always heard about him, but you never saw him.

  111. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:45 pm

That was a pretty crap at-bat by the MFVP.

  112. Georgie

    Are the phils still ahead?

  113. Manny

Now it’s the bottom of the 8th… guys on 3rd and 1st with 2 outs against Baez.

  114. Morris Buttermaker

    May 10, 2010 at 11:58 pm

    Ryan should swipe a bag

  123. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:00 am

ChuckS… I was a little concerned about that too.. but if you look at his splits, you’ll see that hitting 4-5 homers in a month is fairly common for Howard. He’ll then go on a tear and hit 10+ in some other month.

  124. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:00 am

Chuck, Ryan usually picks it up towards the end of the season, doesn’t he?

  125. ChuckS

    May 11, 2010 at 12:00 am

    that’ll do

  126. Morris Buttermaker

    May 11, 2010 at 12:01 am

Howard is going to finish the season with about 40 HR’s. If they don’t come now, they’ll come in August and September. I am not worried.

  127. Mulvi

    May 11, 2010 at 12:02 am

I ain’t worried about the Big Piece. He starts slow and then when he gets going. And when he gets going you better watch out mister, here comes a twister!

  128. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:02 am

Chooch with Howard and Raul on 2nd and 1st…

  129. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:03 am

Oh man, if they load the bases for Valdez… I’m gonna go into freak-out mode.

  130. ChuckS

    May 11, 2010 at 12:04 am

  138. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:06 am

    No Brad Lidge warming up…

  139. HotDogs

    May 11, 2010 at 12:06 am

Never mind Werth…let’s give Chooch some millions!

  140. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:07 am

A single, Georgie.. We’re winning by one!

  141. Mulvi

    May 11, 2010 at 12:07 am

Single scored Howard. 1st and 2nd 1 out. 6-5 Phils. Gload pinch hitting for Valdez. Looks like Castro will play SS for 9th

  142. HotDogs

    May 11, 2010 at 12:07 am

    who pitches the 9th?

  143. Albert

    May 11, 2010 at 12:07 am

    Chooch hit an RBI single.

Now that we’re PHing for Valdez, who plays short in the bottom of the inning?

  144. Mulvi

    May 11, 2010 at 12:07 am

    Contreras is warming up.

  145. Morris Buttermaker

    May 11, 2010 at 12:08 am

Chooch singled to knock in Howard. Gload is PHing for Valdez with men at 1st and 2nd. 1 out.

  146. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:08 am

I was gonna ask the same thing, Albert… it’s gonna be interesting.

  147. Morris Buttermaker

    May 11, 2010 at 12:08 am

    GLLLLLLOOOOOOOAD!

  148. ChuckS

    May 11, 2010 at 12:08 am

    GLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!

  153. Mulvi

    May 11, 2010 at 12:09 am

That’s better than the patented Valdez double play!

  154. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 11, 2010 at 12:09 am

That is exactly what a Bench player is supposed to do!

  155. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:10 am

Gload basically did everything Valdez hasn’t done in 3 games, with one swing of the bat.

    I’m satisfied now.

  156. HotDogs

    May 11, 2010 at 12:10 am

looks like Castro will be SS

  157. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:11 am

Yayyyyyyy!! CHOOOOOOOCH!!!!! He is so underrated. I remember two offseasons ago, some lady named Elizabeth something or other came on here and wrote a novella about how Chooch is overrated and a black hole in the lineup, and not that great defensively or with the pitchers. I think I had to rip her a new one.

  158. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 11, 2010 at 12:11 am

(not that it matters, but sorry for being VERY fashionably late in the 9th inning) 🙂

  159. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:12 am

GET OUT! 3 run homer by Gload? GET OUT!

  160. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:12 am

Don’t look now, but Chooch is FOURTH in the NL in batting average and FIRST in OBP.

    ALL-STAR please.

  161. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:13 am

    Better late than never, Brian…

  162. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:14 am

Yea Brian… just in time for Chooch’s Fiesta!

  163. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:14 am

    Love my Choochy.

  164. Mulvi

    May 11, 2010 at 12:17 am

Why in the hell do the Rockies have that stupid dinosaur as their mascot?

  165. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 11, 2010 at 12:17 am

LOL. I know people are thinking “what is this idiot apologizing for” but I say it, because they are winning, and I don’t like when people just show up just because they are winning, or take a 4 run lead in the op of the 9th. LOL. But hey, I know you guys (so to speak), and figured you would understand that. LOL

  166. Morris Buttermaker

    May 11, 2010 at 12:17 am

Chooch was the MVP of the 2008 World Series.

  167. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:18 am

Chooch today: 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs (the last one extremely clutch)!

  168. Morris Buttermaker

    May 11, 2010 at 12:19 am

Remember that really annoying kid who sat behind the plate at all of the Phillies-Rockies playoff games in Colorado last year? He was worse than the stupid mascot.

  169. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:19 am

Ok 1 more out… I’m going to bed!

Chooch for the Ashburn… and for the All-Star game!!

  170. phillyboy

    May 11, 2010 at 12:19 am

    carlos for mayor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  171. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 11, 2010 at 12:20 am

Mulvi, perfect opportunity for me to chime in to answer that since I am stuck here in colorado. I would have to say they have a dinosaur because the lack of oxygen up here affects their brains. 😉 (Thankfully, the lack of oxygen hasnt affected my brains to point of “rooting for the home team”. LOL. Probably also because in Colorado, the Rockies dont matter AT ALL until the playoffs. If they dont make the playoffs, they dont matter all year. Talk about “front runners”. Im not up there at the game (Im at work) but I would be pretty sure there are just as many if not more Phillies fans at the game.

  172. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:21 am

I would love to pull a Morganna and run out to the batters box and give Chooch a big hug and a sloppy kiss.

  173. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 11, 2010 at 12:21 am

VERY NICE! Mets loss, and a Phillies win!

  174. Manny

    May 11, 2010 at 12:22 am

Games against the Rockies tend to be pretty good… and they’re even sweeter when it’s Ruiz the one leading this team to victory!

    Night all. Great game.

  175. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:23 am

Rockies=Flintstones=dinosaurs? I have no idea, really.

  176. Mulvi

    May 11, 2010 at 12:25 am

Another W! Now the the Nats are 2 games back (sounds weird, huh?) and the Mets 3! Let’s keep the Phaith and we shall be rewarded! I’m saying Chooch or Victorino for the Ashburn.

  177. Georgie

    May 11, 2010 at 12:25 am

Night everyone, thanks for the updates. I’ll have the games back once the Flyers are finished, but hopefully that will be a few weeks 🙂

  178. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 11, 2010 at 12:31 am

Georgie, only in Philadelphia can we get away with “man love” like that. LOL
