2010 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (26-19) at Mets (24-23)

Philadelphia Phillies (26-19) at New York Mets (24-23)

Cole Hamels (5-2, 3.92 ERA) at Mike Pelfrey (6-1, 2.86 ERA)

Time: 7:10, Citi Field
Weather: Partly cloudy, 68
TV: MyPhl 17
Twitter: @philliesnation

Not sure there is really all that much to say in this spot. The Phillies need to score runs, and that’s all there is to it.  They haven’t scored a run since Sunday and haven’t scored a meaningful run since Friday! They’ve beaten up Mike Pelfrey once this year and they’ll need to do it again to break out of this awful slump they’re in.

Cole Hamels toes the rubber in the quest for his 6th victory. He’s been very good lately, however, the Mets are a pesky club at home that can make it hell on opposing pitchers. Just ask Moyer and Blanton. The love to wreak havoc on the basepaths, so Cole might be firing to first base a lot tonight with that pickoff move.

Offensively, it’s not as if the Phils aren’t getting guys on base.  They’ve managed 24 hits the last three games combined.  It’s just what they do with those guys on base that is so unsavory.  This trend of stranding runners is a bit unnerving to say the least.  They’ll need a pick-me-up tonight.

Tonight’s Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez SS, Hamels P

Golden CapYour Gameday BeerYards Extra Special Ale

I’m going with my favorite beer for tonight’s must win. Yeah, I said it – must win.  Yards ESA is a hearty amber ale with a malt body and aromatic hop finish. It’s got some kick to it, 6.0% by volume, but is one of the best beers around, in my opinion.  Plus, it’s made in Philly, so what’s not to love.  Enjoy it with a porterhouse and mashed potatoes and be sure to scream at the TV all night.  The Phillies need all the help they can get.  – By Pat

thanks for the update tommy. you smooth talker. i will go on record and say within two weeks the phillies will be up by 8 games on the mets. mets caught the phillies at a good time and the brew crew and padres will destroy that average team. the mets are very average. there pitching is pathetic and bay is overrated. there in last for a reason. they will go back to there loooooosing ways again. then we can listen to the met fan cry on wfan. like always.

lets get this game going !!!!!

heres a little pre-game stat —- last year going into june 1st ( 48 games)
phils were 28 & 20. Right now thru 45 games phils are 26 & 19 . Even after the worst week you’ll ever see this team play theyre right where they usually are. I’m not worried. Look up howards, utleys , rollins ( need him back a.s.a.p ) and companys career numbers from june on and you’ll feel better. This team will win 93 to 95 games , book it !
Met fans can say what they want , no matter what happens tonite , mets only shot is wildcard , and they know it. Mets do have shot at wildcard , but i think it will come down to last day of season. I dont think the mets are a 90 win team. The NL EAST is the only division in baseball with every team at or above 500 going into tonite. Good luck met fans , how great would it be to play each other in the playoffs !

from the first two innings offensivly, they need to swing at strikes, going be tough hitting tonight, low strike zone but they are going to have to go down and hit them where they aint.
Ruiz has lost his eye for the strike zone, we need to take a lead here and know

  28. jeff

    May 27, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Amazing. Pelfrey is so easy to hit and we can’t get the big hit. Sam should be fired.

  29. Philly Texan

    May 27, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Victorino should have been running there. Would have stayed out of DP.
We need to run more while we’re in this slump.

One run. I just want one friggin run….

  30. beta sigma delta shag

    May 27, 2010 at 10:05 pm

  31. Brian Sr. of CO

    May 27, 2010 at 10:05 pm

That is absolutely sickening. If you are in a slump like that most teams will try this thing called small ball to score a run. 1st and 3rd only 1 out, to me, RUN! Vic shouldhave run. So what if the catcher throws him out, because IF the catcher threw the ball, we probably would have scored on the throw. The Phillies arent just playing poor baseball, they are playing HORRIBLE baseball. I can stomach loses, but this is just bad. With the offense playing like this, we will probably lose 1-0 and get swept. PATHETIC.

@ phuh cube : thanks dude nice to talk to an intelligent mets fan. What do you think the wildcard will take ( 89 wins ? ) . Mets have to go 65 and 50 rest of way for 89 wins. Man thats 15 games over 500 rest of way. I think Omar has to get a pitcher , you cant go with dickey all year. You guys need Beltran back healthy and contributing also. We need Rollins back at the top. Wildcard is gonna be tight till the last day. The way the Phils have played recently i’m worried about my 95 win preseason prediction. We have to go 69 and 48 for 95 wins. The difference is the phils have played that kind of ball the last couple years after may. Hope we get our dream of meeting in the playoffs.

miked63, Thats what its like when we play the mets. nothing but bad language. And they say the Phillies have no class. All I can say is the Phillies are playing as bad as I have seen in a LONG time. Obviously Cholly with the closed door meeting did nothing. Everyone is talking about Sam. What about Milt? This is making me sick to my stomach. I wouldnt be surprised at all if this ends 1-0. really. seriously. Have the Astros even been shut out 4 games in a row this year?

  91. Rivlez

    May 27, 2010 at 10:56 pm

I think the Phillies offensive trouble comes from not understanding how to play in spacious Citi Field. It’s a completely different ball game.

  92. beta sigma delta shag

    May 27, 2010 at 10:56 pm

it was 3-1 not 3-2 on Chase’s lazy fly ball. When you are supposed to be a great hitter and you offense is playing this bad you take that 3-1 pitch unless you know you can crush it, chase was pressing there take it to 3-2. They are all trying to jack a 3 run home run with one guy on base

  93. Ed R.

    May 27, 2010 at 11:21 pm

Sadly, with upcoming series against the braves and marlins, the phillies may be in 3rd or 4th in the division by the end of the week.

I am one of the few optomistic Phillies fans out there, but between the Dobbs error that started Doc’s last start that opened the flood gates, Wreth not getting to two catchable balls the other night, Poly’s 2 run error tonight, this team is just plain bad right now. I know they will get out of this funk some time, hopefully soon. But this string of games is embarassing. They are looking like the Mets of the last 3 years, can not hit with runners in scoring postion, can not field key plays. And look like they are beat before the game is over

  131. glutenous

    May 27, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Both. Team looks atrocious. Like a mid 90s phillies team.

  132. beta sigma delta shag

    May 27, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Why not JC in this spot

  133. jeff

Nobody likes reyes because how he acts. He needs to be humble or a ball to the back

  134. Morris Buttermaker

    May 27, 2010 at 11:31 pm

This game is so bad that I am considering watching basketball.

  135. beta sigma delta shag

    May 27, 2010 at 11:33 pm

not that JC can find the plate, but now you going to double switch with a guy that has not pitched well in the second inning that he pitches and has hard time throwing strikes, Should have never taken out Durbin, This is not a spot for Biaz to come into a game

  136. Morris Buttermaker

    May 27, 2010 at 11:34 pm

The mids 90 teams at least gave a true effort. These guys are playing lazy and stupid baseball. Taking too many short cuts. Stupid coaching as well. Sam Perlozzo should have been fired on the spot tonight.

  137. glutenous

    May 27, 2010 at 11:36 pm

  139. beta sigma delta shag

    May 27, 2010 at 11:37 pm

And i am a defender to Biaz if used right, and I was wrong that it was not a good spot for him, anyone have Crow for me to eat. But I still think that Chad could have gotten out of that inning. Now you have to use Biaz in a second inning where he has not been good this year. And what do you have left in the pen now, Figgy, pitched two days in a row, JC, and Contreous

    May 27, 2010 at 11:41 pm

that was ball three 3-1 even a great hitter like Polly is pressing, and that was the worst strike of the night it was two inches off the plate, someone has to tell the ump it is where it goes past the plate, not where it ends up in the Catchers mitt

    May 27, 2010 at 11:51 pm

I am just fed up with this lack of energy this team has shown and lack of heart that this team has shown. Why we love this team, they are never out of a game, always have faith that they score runs when they need it and they look like they wanted to play this game, now they just look beaten when they come up to the plate. that is what I miss about this team. I think it is going to come back right here in the top of the ninth with the boys that make this offense feared Utley, Howard, and Wreth, double single and a HR in that order, not sure who we have to pinch hit for Baez, Schninder, or Castro, oh year Dobbs I know they can do it

The thing that worries me is that in the two “slumps” the offense has had this season, they didn’t look bad. They looked like the worst offense in baseball.

    May 28, 2010 at 12:07 am

I do not think I have ever had to watch such lifeless, no heart, no pride ball playing in my entire life. And I lived through 100 lose seasons at the Vet in the early 70’s and that team was pretty young and bad, but they showed more pride and heart then this team has shown this week.
I know they still have it in them and maybe they will break out of this funk in FLA. The mirrors that they used the last time JRoll was on the DL have all been broken. And do all you JRoll haters see what he means to this offense now. It is truely pathetic to be this lifeless. Ruining a great start by Cole, really only giving up one run, if Polly does not misplay that ground ball.
But it is time to move on and pretend this week never happened and cheer for the Phillies in FLA, KK will be the benificiary of this pathetic 6 games, by getting some run support tomorrow night. So all he will need to do is pitch 6 or 7 and give 3-5 runs and get the win.
Lets just all move on, and start a new day tomorrow

  171. glutenous

    May 28, 2010 at 12:11 am

I might add that the phils did hit SOME balls hard and the mets did make some plays in the field, but all in all they looked bad. Good, solid start from cole. Its a shame he hasn’t been getting the run support. The silver lining? Even the rays, as great as their offense is, had a perfect game thrown against them. **** happens. Phillies will snap out of it in a big way.

  172. Morris Buttermaker

  173. glutenous

    May 28, 2010 at 12:20 am

Morris, that could be, but how would one year separate a wfc, nl championship, and stinking, with all of the pieces and then some still in place?

  174. Morris Buttermaker

    May 28, 2010 at 12:24 am

Sometimes teams have it, and then they lose it, and then gain it back. I just have not seen that spark in the team this year. They have played some good baseball. But they just don’t seem to have that spark they had the past few years. I don’t know if it is just missing Jimmy or whatever. But I have not seen that many comebacks from them. They had the one game in San Fran and the Sunday night game against the Mets. But just have not really shown it this year.

  175. glutenous

    May 28, 2010 at 12:48 am

Iknow what you mean, they really haven’t been that team against which, “no lead is safe,” and they have played some uninspired baseball. I hope they realize that if they are the team that everyone in the nl wants to knock down. Nobody is going to give them anything and if they expect to win they have to want it. Its still early lots of baseball left. Go phillies.
