Gameday: Phillies (39-33) at Blue Jays (40-35) – Phillies Nation
2010 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (39-33) at Blue Jays (40-35)

Philadelphia Phillies (39-33) at Toronto Blue Jays (40-35)

Jamie Moyer, LHP (8-6, 4.43 ERA) vs. Brett Cecil, LHP (7-4, 4.07 ERA)

Time: 1:35, Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 90
Twitter: @philliesnation

The story of the day is likely to be the home run. Not only do the Blue Jays, who hit three of them in yesterday’s 5-1 win, lead the major leagues in that category, the next one that goes over the wall off today’s starter, Jamie Moyer, will be one for the record books. Moyer is currently sitting on 505 career homers allowed, tied with Robin Roberts for the highest total of all time. So if you’re in the outfield seats today, don’t toss that one back. It’s special. Also, this isn’t Wrigley Field.

It’s worth noting the startling turnaround of the past couple weeks in some of the Phillies’ offensive numbers. Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard are close to sniffing .300, Shane Victorino’s no longer leading the team in RBI, and Chase Utley’s average is up 20 points from where it was two weeks ago. Good deal.

Schneider and Polanco get the day off, with Valdez manning third and Sardinha catching.

LINEUP: Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Werth RF, Howard 1B, Victorino CF, Francisco LF, Ibanez DH, Valdez 3B, Sardinha C. Moyer P.

Your gameday beer: Go for the King of Beers today. Budweiser gets it done daily, even though it’s not a favorite of mine. Millions around the country drink it, so have at the red 30-pack today.– By Michael

Check out the grey Phillies tank top t-shirt when lefties are up.

Is it bad that I actually really like Valdez as a Utility Man 3B/SS/2B over Eric Brunt…I mean Greg Dobbs? Despite Valdez grounding into a Fielder’s Choice, his speed was awesome and showed when he scored on Sardinha’s Double (which was a nice piece of hitting for a career .240 Triple A hitter)

Valdez also made the nice short hop play at 3rd in the first.

Great job by Moyer getting out of that jam after the error. Cannot say enough about how he’s re-bounded this year when it looked like there was no place for him.

No Greg, I love Valdez, I am glad he is on this team. He can also play 3 INF positions and corner outfield if need be.

I said it before, Valdez minor legue signing was one of the better signings by RAJ.

Also just became the leader in Home Runs given up. Beat ole’ Robin Roberts.

Seriously, Dobbs doesn’t score from 1st on the double. We’d have a 1 run game right now if it weren’t for Valdez.

Jimmy, wtf?! You’re an On-base beast the past couple games. Jeez. 3 Singles today, 4 walks a couple days ago. I’m liking this.

Jimmy is on fire today! And more solid base running from Valdez.

I think I have a little post traumatic stress from the long offensive slump so yesterday made me start to worry. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.

How long did Robin Roberts play in the majors?

I really have to say, despite the fact that Cole didn’t have his stuff yesterday, I’m feeling a bit for him. Even when the bats are back, they can’t produce for him. His W/L ratio should be a lot more lopsided right now.

May be still a bit early to call it, but I’d be very surprised if Moyer wasn’t in the All-Star Game this year if he keeps performing the way he has. Staying power, baby. Staying power.
