Very nice bottom of the 2nd with Gload and Dobbs getting extra-base hits.

Giambi is horrible at first base. Rockies are just playing bad baseball right now. Hopefully, we can capitalize on this and win this game. Blanton fine, except for the number of pitches he’s thrown –on a day when we needed him to go deep into the game (70 through 4 innings).

  103. The Original Chuck P

I’ll take Lidge over any closer that’s available… the thing about Lidge is that even when he was “perfect,” he would consistently get himself into trouble. He’s not lights out by any stretch but he’s definitely capable of zoning in and shutting the door… the problem is that he likes to open the door and let in a few amigos in first. He needs a day or two off, though… a couple of shaky innings means he’s probably not available tomorrow.

  115. Blaise

    July 26, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Okay. Pick a closer of your choice. None of them are worth as much as Roy Oswalt.

Not Mariano Rivera. Not Jonathan Broxton.

    WAR:
    Roy Oswalt: 2.7
    Jonathan Broxton: 1.7
    Mariano Rivera: 1.3

You’re probably the kind of guy that actually uses wins and losses as a way to measure the value of a pitcher too LOLZ.

  116. The Original Chuck P

    July 26, 2010 at 4:27 pm

The Phillies save percentage is 65% (11 saves in 20 opportunities)… league average is 68%.

The Dodgers, who have Jonathan Broxton, have a 69% save percentage. The Red Sox, who have Papelbon, have a 64% save percentage. The Yankees who have Mo, have a 68% save percentage.

Lidge has 3 blown saves (including one blown save win) in 13 opportunities… that’s a save percentage of 77%.

I think Charlie’s trying to make or break Lidge in the next couple of weeks.

Heart attack Lidge strikes again. Nice job on him hanging on for the save.

Baez or Romero as the Closer? Don’t make me laugh! We’d have forty-minute ninth innings before either of these guys could get three outs without going through the entire order more than once or twice in a row!

See, I could see the case for switching Madson and Lidge up every once in a while. But Contreras belongs in the seventh. In the off-chance he implodes, at least the offense has another six to nine outs to pull it out.

Yo, Andrew the Phaithless, without Lidge, we’re going on three decades without a championship.

Andrew… see the stats above. Have you been watching this season or just the past two games. Beat it, geek.

So you really think a good reliever would help the team more than Roy Oswalt?

    Wow…

    Um…

    Okay.

    Glad you’re not the GM.

I think you guys need to lighten up, do you actually watch the game. Yes walking Herrahara was uncalled for he needs to make that guy hit his way on. But the pitch before the HR was a strike and called a ball then called a strike on Spillsburg, and he did ;not want to wallk some one else, which is the pitch he had to throw that pitch to Herrara and make him swing. It was his second day in a row with 30 pitches yestarday, and with a 3 run lead I do not think you bring him in until you have 1 or 2 outs, I think that was a bad move, why not let Herdon, or Beaz give up a run before you bring Lidge in. Why not match up, Charlie did it before, and suddenly stopped.
But a win is a win, he has gotten out of two jams that he put himself into, but he did get out of them, so leave him alone he got the save

  131. The Original Chuck P

    July 26, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I agree, Kate… keep it light. Gotta laugh when Lidge does that. Of course, no one wants to see that happen but a win is a win. Back to back games popping Xanax.

Correction on those stats… it’s 21 saves in 32 opportunities or 65.6% (11 blown saves).

Lidge needs to get the hook. This is terrible to keep running him out there the way he has been.

    July 26, 2010 at 4:39 pm

We live or die with Lidge – Madson can’t close we have seen that repeatedly. You can’t just trade for a closer…

    A win is a win.

Insert any 2 bankable relievers names

Ill take them over a starter.

I guess Lidges 27 ERA in last years series and Mitch Williams in 93 have been enough for me.

  136. Geoff

    July 26, 2010 at 4:56 pm

There really isnt another choice. Lidge is the closer until his contract runs out, for better or worse. Closers don’t grow on trees and in the postseason he becomes a different guy and gets good again. I will stay with Lidge. Those other guys do not have the postseason pedigree that he has, and they never will. In the modern era since saves became an important stat, Lidge is the second best playoff closer ever – second only to Mariano Rivera. Who has like three times more saves than Lidge in the playoffs, but still – the numbers don’t lie, Lidge is the man you want int he postseason back there.

  137. Geoff

    July 26, 2010 at 4:57 pm

And he needs to stop being afraid to throw his fastball and stop nibbling and let it rip again, and then he will be fine.

  138. NickFromGermantown

    July 26, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Does Brad Lidge have a contract that says he must be used? He’s been exposed badly and if he can’t use his fast ball, he’s not worth pitching. We’re lucky to have 2 wins these past two days.

At this point, you need to start testing other people. Scott Mathieson has been waiting in the wings forever and apparently wants to be traded because of how he hasn’t seen any playing time. Bring him up and try him out. I don’t know if he could be any worse.

    July 26, 2010 at 5:05 pm

if that story about oswalt is true he should not be pitching in the big leagues. waste your life in houston. here is my opinion. do not make the trade if he wants to come here. i love happ and rather have him. jr gave up the right for a big starter when he traded lee away. aweful move. oswalt has back issues. would not touch him. haren was there for the taking. i still would keep happ.

    July 26, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Obviously that report is bogus, professionals don’t act like that. Doesn’t want to come to philly? When he has excellent numbers at CBP and would be in a sick rotation with a chance at two rings before his contract expires. Stupid…I can see not wanting to go into the mess that is New York, but you have to take these rumours at little value. Its all these guys reporting hearsay with NO direct quotes from the club, agent, or player. Its all bull…If the Astros want to trade him at all they have to deal with us because noone else can afford it in the teams that have been mentioned.

Then again, the Angels were not mentioned at all for Haren and look what they did…

Lidge… 3 blown saves in 13 opportunities this season. That ain’t too bad, folks. Doctor’s remedy: take a few xanax, rub your buddha statue or pray to whomever you might pray to for strength and hold on for the 9th inning ride… Lights Out Lidge is our guy as long as he’s one of our guys.

  142. psujoe

    July 26, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Who did they call up for Moyer?

Bastardo has given up 1 hit in 5.0 innings 0 bbs so he’s ready. Mathiason no bbs in last 5 appearences so he may be ready. What’s up with Figgy?

Forget Oswalt. He doesn’t want to be in Philly so Phils need to look at a cheaper option if it’s starting pitching. I won’t even mention Myers anymore. Any other pitchers with multiple years on a non contender?

  143. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 26, 2010 at 5:19 pm

You dont have to accept lidge or losing.

Thankfully this isnt the cubbies and the lovable losers.

Losing is a disease… as contagious as polio… as contagious as syphilis… as contagious as the bubonic plague… attacking one, but affecting all

Maybe the Phillies should be looking for a bona fide closer rather then a starter. Lidge is horrible to say the least. He got away lucky this time. This guy can never just go in and get the side out. He has to walk people, hit batters and give up runs almost everytime. Brad Lidge has mental issues and you never know what you’re going to get when he comes in.

  145. Kate

    July 27, 2010 at 5:57 am

Hey, Andrew, they’re heading for the D’backs with five wins in a row, two of those having been saved by Brad Lidge.

What are you, a Mets fan in disguise? Are you one of those screaming to get rid of Ibanez who have fallen suspiciously silent in the past few days because they’ve finally noticed he’s producing for this team?

That being said, there’s no way we’re seeing Lidge again until Thursday, at least.

If the D’backs act like the D’backs, there will be no need for Lidge. Of course, I shouldn’t say that too loudly.

  146. Brooks

    July 27, 2010 at 7:41 am

Please Kate – the Phils have not shown the consistency we need yet to assume dominance over any team, yet (uh, remember the visit to our cross state rivals?).

Truth is, Lidge does not have the stuff he is still trying to rely on. His breaking ball is becoming quite predictable and his fastball does not come close to the zip he had in 08. Truth is, the Phils have been lucky in the past 2 games coming away with wins. Giving up 2 then allowing another bases loaded situation yesterday before it all ended – oh my.

But Cholly will not abort his course. Cholly will stay with Brad, win or lose and we all know this. The real hope is that the offense can do enough damage before the 9th inning so the lead is extremely difficult to overcome.

Figueroa was picked up by the Astros on waivers because the Phillies decided to keep Danys Baez on the team. If you’re still trying to figure that move out, please stop because no, it doesn’t make sense. This amounts to nothing more than a huge blunder over the fact that Baez was given an awful contract, especially with how Figueroa has been pitching this year. Do I expect him to single-handedly vault the Phillies to the playoffs? No. But I do expect him to be more consistent and effective than Baez, who has shown very poor control with the ball.

“Hey, Andrew, they’re heading for the D’backs with five wins in a row, two of those having been saved by Brad Lidge.”

I’d use the term “save” loosely and only in the most technical manner. Lidge was terrible both games. Sadly, it’s not 2008 anymore. We can’t keep giving this guy a free pass just because he did so well that year.

  149. The Original Chuck P

    July 27, 2010 at 9:38 am

Lidge is struggling in the stretch… maybe he’s tipping pitches working out of the stretch. He needs a few days to work solely on that aspect of his game… a few off days would be really nice.

People will look back on this series as the one that tipped the scale… a four game sweep of the Rockies was HUGE. I don’t want to get too far ahead of this train but we’ve got favorable pitching matchups in this series against the D’Backs and then we get the Nats and although we will have to face Strasburg, we miss Livan Hernandez. Ending this brutal stretch of 18 straight games without a day off on a high note would be huge… it would put a lot of pressure on the Braves who are just starting their death stretch (27 games in 28 days). Interestingly, we only play the Braves one more time this year and it’s not until September 20th.

RE: Baez. I don’t like him (and his contract) either. But the guy can at least throw hard out of the pen.. If, somehow, he manages to lock down, he could be a valuable weapon for the mid-late innings.

  151. Manny

    July 27, 2010 at 9:53 am

Original: and guess who goes against Strasburg on Sunday? (King Cole –so we still got a decent chance to win that one).

    PHAITH!

  152. NickFromGermantown

    July 27, 2010 at 9:59 am

Manny, very true, but why does he have to figure out his life when important games are on the line? They should have sent him down to work on control and keep Figueroa. Outside of Durbin, Figueroa may have been the only guy you could count on coming out of the ‘pen. Contreras was one of those guys, but he’s become derailed some how.

Also, this Rule 5 loyalty to Herndon is getting out of control. Between Baez and Herndon, I don’t know how you DFA Figueroa.
