2010 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (48-46) at Cardinals (54-41)

CardinalsPhiladelphia Phillies (48-46) at St. Louis Cardinals (54-41)

Cole Hamels, LHP (7-7, 3.63 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright, RHP (14-5, 2.02 ERA)

Time: 2:15 p.m., Busch Stadium
Weather: Mostly Sunny, 94
TV: CSN
Twitter: @PhilliesNation

I’ll keep this one plain and simple – if the Phillies don’t start winning games soon, they won’t last much longer in this race for either the NL East or the NL Wild Card.  This could be their toughest challenge of the road trip, which ends today. Adam Wainwright pitches for the Cards and he’s one of the best in all of baseball. Cole Hamels goes for the Phillies and he has been damn good lately. Sadly, that hasn’t mattered. The offense can do no right.

Keep up with PhilliesNation.com all day on our Trade Deadline Thread as well as the Gameday for all coverage surrounding Jayson Werth, Roy Oswalt, and any other name being floated about.

And, somehow, try to enjoy today’s game.

LINEUP: Polanco 3B, Victorino CF, Ibanez LF, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Rollins SS, Schneider C, Valdez 2B, Hamels P.

Your Gameday Beer: Tanqueray and Tonic

Forget beer. Give me a TNT on the rocks. Phillies fans need something strong right about now and this is a thirst quenching treat that will rock you after a few of them. Shake it well and drink it slow. You’ll need to. –By Pat

  25. Manny

Phils need to get back to having those longggg at-bats that they used to have earlier in the season…

Right now, some guys like Polanco, Raul and Howard are doing it… but guys like Shane, Valdez, J-roll, and sometimes Werth, completely forgot how to be patient and keep swinging at the first-pitch, in the first inning!!! When was the last time you’ve seen Werth having those 7+ pitch at-bats in which he’d foul off a bunch of pitches??

Just be patient. Work on getting the pitcher out of the game. Phils were usually good at this. It just seems like they have no coherent plan before the game.. everybody’s on their own, trying to hit a bomb or something.

  26. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 22, 2010 at 2:54 pm

The other teams should just put a runner on third at the begining of every inning for the Phils. The Phils would never ever get a hit.

Like Michael Jordan. I used to say he should start every game with 5 fouls because then he could do whatver he wanted ( but I guess he got to do that anyway). MJ never fouled out of a game in his entire career.

Manny way to keep it positive.
I like the chances here. Work some counts guys.

it’s just so boring looking at the phillies boxes every game. always 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 until the game is done and dusted. and on the rare ocassion when we actually get some early runs a bozo like kendrick throws up some meatballs.

  50. Phan in the outfield

    July 22, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Nobody is communicating anymore for anything. They’re almost crashing (sometimes they ARE – witness LF the other night) in the OF, nobody knows what they’re doing on base, nobody knows what they’re doing at the plate – I don’t understand what’s happened to this whole team.

A double play by Wilson Valdez?!? Wow, you don’t see that every day! Just maybe every other day. Or at least only during games in which he gets an at-bat.

  65. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 22, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Larussa already took his SP out.
Youd think charlie could take notice and put it in his mind what a hall of fame manager did with his starting pitcher.
Seems like Charlie believes you leave them in untill they blow it. Never preemptive.

  67. Greg

    July 22, 2010 at 4:07 pm

i love cholly, but am starting to get fed up w/ him. he had an awful game last night (hitting blanton w/ bases loaded in a 1-1 game, leaving blanton in to start the 8th in a 201 game) and he needs to get rid of valdez. i understand he can field but his offense is awful. polanco at 2nd, dobbs at 3rd against righties. sorry defense, we need some offense.

  68. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 22, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Funny we have the A++ hamels now and the team stinks.
Its ironic if we had this Cole last year in the playoffs probably have another WS title.

  69. BCS

    July 22, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Let’s pinch-hit for Cole and make something happen AND make up for last night!

  70. Andrew from Waldorf

  71. Brooks

    July 22, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Unreal – this futility without scoring a run will manifest itself in a loss, sooner or later – this is pitiful.

We are fast approaching – “the meltdown innings..”

  74. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 22, 2010 at 4:11 pm

i mean we dont score. I was sick to myself that Blanton was left iin to give up 5 last ngiht and Cole simply doesnt deserve it. Take him out old man. For a PH

  76. Ted Bell

    I’m Ted Bell.

  77. Morris Buttermaker

    July 22, 2010 at 4:12 pm

With Dobbs in the field, you are going to need a lot more offense.

The other night I realized the Phillies were in a bad slump when I also felt that Greg Dobbs needed more playing time.

  78. Brooks

    July 22, 2010 at 4:13 pm

Another 7 pitch inning for Cole – you sure you want him out of there? Who comes in, Romero? Baez? Herndon? Contreras just threw 2 games in a row –

  79. Manny

    July 22, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Hamels has 79 pitches… you take him out? He could go all 9…. and we’d have to get a run or two against their pen

  80. Georgie

    July 22, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Of course you leave him in, you’d leave Halladay in, and Cole’s pitching as well as/better than Roy today.

  81. Brooks

    July 22, 2010 at 4:15 pm

79 pitches at the end of 7 complete – look, it could fall apart but this is absolutely the best game he has pitched this year so far.

  82. Todd

  84. Ted Bell

    July 22, 2010 at 4:16 pm

I’ll take Hamels with only 79 pitches thrown over ANYBODY in that bullpen…

    I’m Ted Bell.

  85. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 22, 2010 at 4:16 pm

I just dont thnk its fair that Cole probably takes the loss after as well as he pitched is all.
Larussa got his probable cy young award winner ( or second to the guy from col) out after 6. Maybe Cole likes the heat. Its nto as bad as leaving blanton in last night.

  86. Manny

    July 22, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Definitely, especially leading off an inning… it’s not like the BASES ARE LOADED!

  89. Andrew from Waldorf

Boy Victorino got lucky on that one. Sometimes he is really lucky. We have 8 hits to their 1. We’ve just been wasting everything.

Someone in my office just told me they saw that Oswalt, outright, said he wants St. Louis and would be willing to wave much of his no trade clause to make the deal. It could all be “rumors” of course. But like Manny I honestly don’t know that we should bother with some large trade while the whole team plays like this.

Oh, hey, Greg I don’t blame Oswalt. Not at all. You know if I were a player I’d want to go where I wanted to go, ha, but…doesn’t work that way until you play like a superhero. Does Werth strike out swinging?

Does Jayson hit his first HR in months?

God I hate when they change the pitcher for RH & LF batters. Come on. The Cards have won 3 games! It’s not as though the Phillies are playing amazingly well. Just freaking pitch.

The sports media in Phila is notoriously tough, bordering on brutal. It isn’t junk. I don’t think Oswalt’s wrong to not want it. It’s his preference. But he openly said it now. That means there will likely be responses. We all know the best thing would be if there was no response at all from the media or fans in Phila. Just don’t say anything. The rest of the country expects and wants Phila to pipe up and be nasty. BUT, I guess we’ll see.

  141. Greg

i can’t even take it. these awful double plays that kill rallies and leave us stuck at the awful bottom of our lineup. now IF we make it to the tenth we have schneider, valdez and pinch hitter.

  142. Ted Bell

    July 22, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Andrew, there is nobody even remotely hot on this team other than Howard. Manuel doesn’t have many choices when he fills out the lineup card…

  145. pheeling it

what makes me soooo mad is that this cards team is elementary!

wainwright throws the big breaking ball, WAIT on him

the bullpen is all fireballers, SWING EARLY. 100 in means 100 out

when a team goes on a slump like this, it’s nice to know what is coming at you, and this team looks so surprised. THINK about what pitch is coming and stop thinking about what pitch MAY come

  146. Brooks

  148. Phan in the outfield

    July 22, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Yeah actually double plays are the specialties of Valdez & Ibanez and lately Rollins. Werth doesn’t do them much. He just strikes out or flies out. Though I have to say the last fly out was way out to the track in CF. It looked pretty good for – oh – a split sec.

All you people that posted all this negative trash on this thread should be ashamed of yourselves.

Stuff like “Lidge sucks”, “Cholly is such an idiot”, “Werth sucks” “This won’t end well” “Cards will have a walk-off homer”

    ETC, ETC, ETC…………..

    ——————-

Four game series are hard to win and hard to lose. We’ve lost 2 of those in a row but right before that we SWEPT one. 12 games….all part of 4-game series

The record in those 12 games is 6-6. Against 2 first place teams when we played them (Cards and Reds) and a hot team at the time in the Cubs (at Wrigley).

Putting that stretch of 12 games into perspective…you have to be ok with 6-6. Without Polanco for half of those games and without Utley for all of them.

  248. Lets go Mets
