Gameday: Reds (49-38) at Phillies (44-40)

Cincinnati Reds (49-38) at Philadelphia Phillies (44-40)

It wasn’t pretty.  It wasn’t easy.  But the Phillies pulled out a much needed victory in last night’s 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds, thanks to Brian Schneider’s walk-off home run.  Hopefully tonight’s game is a little more well-played, and a Phillies win can come easier.

Unfortunately, wins haven’t come easy for Joe Blanton, but it would be nice to see him end the first half on a high note.  He is 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in his last ten starts, however, the big right-hander has struggled all season long, as opponents are batting .294 against him.  Many times, he has become a victim of a big inning for the opposition.  Blanton needs to limit the damage and put his team into position to win.  In addition, as witnessed last night, the bullpen can not always be relied on.  The Phillies could use seven or eight innings from Blanton.  With that being said, the Phillies also need to score more than four runs.  They’ll have to do that against Mike Leake.

Leake, who skipped the minor leagues completely, has had a solid rookie campaign.  Leake had a stretch where he struggled, but overall he has pitched very well.  Last week, the Phillies were able to figure him out, scoring six runs in six innings against him.  It would be nice to see the Phillies do that again.

The Reds are contenders this year. They’re going to continue to play the Phillies tough.  The Phillies just have to keep up with them.  For the Phillies to show that they are still in this race, they need to beat other first place teams. This is a perfect time for it.

Lineup: Leslie Gudel of CSN reports some late changes to both lineups: “Wilson Valdez out with sore left wrist, Castro playing 2nd. Scott Rolen out with sore back. Miguel Cairo playing 3rd.”

Your Gameday Beer: A local brew, Prima Pils by Victory is on tap tonight. It is delicious. Full of body with a flowery but not too sweet flavor, this is a fairly hoppy beer. It goes perfect with anything hot off the grill that is also rich in flavor, like ribs or a kona-encrusted steak. -By Brian

GO PHILLIES!

We want Votto or Phillips to steal. I dont need homers.

I actually like Sarge and Mccarthy.

Sarge was one of my all time favorite players. I was 10 when the Phils traded bob Walk for him and I cried. but my grand dad told the guy they got for him was good. I learned alot from that.

  80. Morris Buttermaker

Some good news. John Manuel thinks the Phillies have the best A club talent in the minors. That includes Clearwater and Lakewood. I hope Rube doesn’t panic and send these guys out. Also said Defratus fastball hit 98 at the all star game.

Milt Thomson has changed a lot since he had his teeth fixed. Back when he played he had perhaps the worst teeth in baseball. So bad I believe the commissioner insisted that he get them fixed if he were ever to get a job as a coach. But it changed him, and not for the better.

going into the ninth it was just me and chuck here making fun of dobbs LOL

What a great game. I am still in shock and joy

  187. AGH

    July 9, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Say what you will about Philly fans, but the bank looked pretty packed at the end, considering the home team entered the bottom of the 9th trailing by 6 runs.

  188. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 9, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Jeff they have beaten probably the second best team in the NL the last 2 nights. IMO

  189. Brooks

    July 9, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Ok, what happened? Who plugged them in the bottom of the 9th inning! What got that started? The Reds pitcher dominated all night long and we took it out on him, Coldero and our old buddy Artie!
Could this be a Hollywood script? None better!

  190. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 9, 2010 at 10:24 pm

    AGH its a fireworks night

  198. ChuckN

    July 9, 2010 at 10:29 pm

ChuckN is eating his words and enjoying every biteful. I also crapped myself and am going to beat myself with a wet shoestring. Tonight, Ryan Howard is worth every penny.

  199. Jeff of Nova

    July 9, 2010 at 10:29 pm

I disagree about the Reds, but we need to start beating the Braves and Mets as well.

I think the Reds have played way above themselves and will start to come back down to earth

  200. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 9, 2010 at 10:29 pm

    coming into the ninth
I would have said 1 time in 1000 they come back and thats generous.

This is what we did for the last 2 years

Charlie sticking with that Dobbs. Ransom in cold with 2 outs in 9th down 2

    amazing

  201. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 9, 2010 at 10:32 pm

2 teams I dont want to see in the playoffs are Reds and Cardinals. I fear no other NL teams

  202. MikeB.

    July 9, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Could have been a case of the Reds letting their starting pitcher in too long. The Phils gained confidence, the Reds relief pitching was ineffective and everything snowballed from there. When I heard that Baker was bringing in Rhodes in relief I thought to myself that he has been going to Rhodes too much and too soon again against the Phils in these last two series and familiarity with Rhodes would come into play and sure enough…look what happened. Great win!

  203. Brooks

    July 9, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Ashburn award already: Dobbs, Howard and Ransom

  204. Andrew from Waldorf

Dobbs for making us BELIEVE again.

    Ransom for CLUTCH.

    Howard for FINISHING IT.

    AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  209. greg dobbs

    July 9, 2010 at 10:46 pm

do you guys still want me off the team?

  210. MikeB.

    July 9, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Jeff of Nova; I agree about the Reds. They are playing over their heads, especially offensively. I like the Cardinals in that Central Division to win out the last couple of months because of the experience they would have in the heat of a pennant race. The Reds are getting that pitcher Volesquez or however you spell his name, back from injury before too long and he is a real fireball pitcher but I do not think that this team will hold up against Pujols and his gang towards the end of the year.

  211. Andrew from Waldorf

    July 9, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Now lets score tomorrow for the Doctor

    Keep it positive Philadelphia

  212. MikeB.

    July 9, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Need to get Ransom in the lineup. This guy is 3 for 6 since he has been called up with a HR now.

  213. Kate

    July 9, 2010 at 10:51 pm

While I still feel tentative regarding things overall, these past two games have probably done wonders for these guys’ faith in themselves and each other to come back at the end.

Probably shouldn’t have COME to that, but there’s a reason for everything, and maybe if they can take these last two late game comebacks and build on it.

And I owe Dobbs an apology for the second time.

  214. MikeB.

    July 9, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Phils need to keep the other teams off the board early and strive to score early in the games which is a no brainer and easier said than done.

  215. Psujoe

    July 9, 2010 at 10:57 pm

LMAO. Wow, just wow. Dobbs, ransom, Raul is coming on. Ryan is the man. Great to have Masdon back.

Wow, just wow. I’m numb. Roy has to be stoked for tomorrows game. Huge. Reds are one of six teams we need to beat out. Wow.

  216. Georgie

    July 9, 2010 at 11:02 pm

Psujoe….I know, I LOVE these guys and it’s so hard to see them struggle like they have been. They all looked really happy and excited tonight, which makes me feel the same way!

  217. Kate

    July 10, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Hey, Georgie, I feel the same way for you. I’m not frustrated AT these guys, I’m frustrated FOR them and it’s so great to see them come through when they needed to come through these past two games. I’m so happy for them, because it’s been a struggle.

If they make it back to the WS this year, they will have EARNED every inch and every bit of praise we can shower on them.

    Never say die.
