The Phillies have rebounded quickly after being swept by the lowly Houston Astros.  Now, the Phillies are on the verge of sweeping the first place San Diego Padres.  This series has been about pitching, as both teams haven’t gathered too many runs.  That’s usually how PETCO plays out anyway.

Cole Hamels, a San Diego native, always has success when facing the Friars.  Hamels has a 3.18 ERA against the Padres in his career, but a more impressive 2.18 ERA at PETCO Park.  Hamels keeps improving as the season progresses, however the problem seems to be run support.  The lack of run support for Hamels is getting extremely tiring.  Hopefully that changes today.

Overall, Clayton Richard has solid numbers for the season.  His repitoire includes a two-seam fastball, a slurve, and a changeup.  He typically keeps the ball down, forcing many ground balls.

Your gameday beer: For the slumber party, try a Coronado Golden, a blonde ale from the Coronado Brewing Co. of San Diego. It’s an average beer, but blonde ales tend to range wildly in the expert line. Pair this with a late-night order of pizza. Do it. — By Tim

GO PHILLIES!

Cards are down 4-0 against the Nats as well, but we know about the Nats bull pen.

Petco really helps Cole because he doesn’t get hurt as much by the long ball.

Those mighty Braves. This was too predictable.
    Paging bravomorono
If the Phils dont win the division it will be the Marlins.

If the Phils can win this its a sweep at SD. The team with the best record in the NL. I was saying before the astros series that best record in the NL was my personal goal for the team. IMO the back end of the pen is now solid. Friday night not withstanding. Now before the year is over both howard and Utley are going to get hot. This is possible. Need to keep rolling though.

How about 8 hits and 4 runs minimum today? Just saying

Osawalt should be happy he chose us. The Cards are the same every year. Pitching good offense is ok. The Padres do not scare me. No offense. The Braves will fall apart. They are not very good. That leaves us. We will take over and these guys will start to hit. What I like about these games against good pitching, we are winning. Thats playoff baseball. You wont score ten runs when you get in.

They fooled me again by covering another terrible performance by D-Blow. What a disgrace that man is getting $15m a year to pitch like garbage and overuse the bullpen on a regular basis. 71. Jeff of Nova

    August 29, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Okay so let me put it nicely…..
Braves fans I am by no means even suggesting that the Braves are even remotely better than the Phillies, just better than they were last year and scary at home, but beating the Marlins after coming from down 5 runs to win at home doesn’t scare me cause the Marlins are not a good team

so Braves5678 just suck it. BravoMan…. good points always like what you have to offer the conversation:)

  72. Andrew from Waldorf

    August 29, 2010 at 5:12 pm

You can actually hit gappers in this stadium and get doubles and triples.
    The hitting is scary.

  73. Braves5678

    August 29, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Jeff, the Phils getting swept in a four game set at home against Houston doesn’t exactly make the Braves fear the Phillies anymore. That’s more embarrassing than blowing a 10-1 lead. The Braves were “supposed” to lose first place by now, but they’ve only proven that they’re there to stay.

The Braves are such an average team. The only reason they are in first is because the Phillies have struggled with the bats. Half our team on the DL and we are 2 back. lol. bunch of hicks. With our three aces we will kick there a s s. Im not worried about the Braves. Bobby will increase smoking up to three packs a day.

  80. Braves5678

    August 29, 2010 at 5:22 pm

The Phillies lack the swagger the once had. The Braves come in expecting to make a comeback if needed, while the Phillies can only hope for one. Better clubhouse, better manager, better chemistry, better atmosphere, better story, and better team. Go Braves.

  81. Jeff of Nova

    August 29, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Phillies have been streaky and inconsistent this year period we know that… but what we also all know is that it is the most experienced team and much more talented than that of the Braves, Padres, or Cards. So when it comes down to it and the Phils are healthy and ready to go now, and you are right the Astros sweep was bad, we also had Howard not healthy and ready to go, but not as bad as losing a 10 run lead sorry not winning that one.

The Phillies were 7 games back and no where near the WC back in the begining and middle of July so basically it is the Braves that are falling. Braves won’t go far in the post season…. no one wants the defending NL Champs in there at ALL!! That is FEAR PERIOD!

Jeff, if the Braves are average then why do they lead the MLB in comeback or walk off wins? Why have they given up 27 less runs than the Phillies? Why have they scored 23 more runs than the Phillies? Why are they third in NL Runs? Why is Martin Prado having a better season than Chase Utley? Why is Alex Gonzalez having a better season than Jimmy Rollins. Why is the Braves’ bullpen ten times better than that of the Phillies? Why are they in first place. Eat it.

That’s what it comes down to. We’re better than you if we’re in first place. You can’t talk trash if you’re chasing a team. We didn’t have anything to say when we were chasing you. So, until you catch us shut your yaps.

  94. Andrew from Waldorf

One of the reasons I want the Braves to lose is because when they win thier feeble minded fans come here. I suppose whatever blogs they have for thier team are feeble also. 95. Greg

    August 29, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Braves5678: It isn’t hard for a team with 17/25 players on the DL to be behind a team with 4 people on the DL. 23 more runs is pathetic. Think about what you just said. All but 2 of our opening day lineup men have been on the DL, yet you could only score 23 more runs? What a joke. I cannot wait till we sweep the Braves out.

I have never followed a team in any sport that can look so bad and then so good in a 1 week span. It doesnt get any worse than the astros series and the Lidge meltdown here on friday. But it doesnt get much better than sweeping the team with the best record in the NL on the road.

    August 29, 2010 at 6:34 pm

I read some of the comments by Bravos. In any given sport the or anything the most talented team doesnt always win. Sometimes pure determination a little luck and giving 110% does it. The Braves continue to find ways to win with the talent they have on hand. The Phils just have to keep at it and keep at it….ps…..this was a great game by Cole i was a lil worry about the 1st 2 innings however he was great from that point on……..

  162. Lefty

    August 29, 2010 at 6:35 pm

    Andrew,
Astros series was not much of an aberration, it’s a perfect example of a good team playing down to it’s competition. In all my years playing and coaching baseball, softball and soccer, whenever I had a really good team, it would happen. But that same team is also capable of playing up to it’s competition too.

Here’s the good news, there is no competition to play down to in the playoffs. Got to get there first, but won’t have to worry about that kind of letdown once we do.

Lefty I said this as a joke but it is also kind of serious.
If I was a team facing the Phillies in the playoffs Id bring up junk pitchers from the minors. The phillies simply can not hit bad pitchers they never ever do. The dodgers are throwing 2 good pitchers and 1 skell at the Phillies in the next series. The guy who has 3 wins in game 2 scares me more than kershaw.

  168. Brooks

    August 29, 2010 at 6:46 pm

Unbelievable Jay! Wow – I was driving down the Jersey Shore with my wife and tuned in when the Phils got their first hit. I told her that I did not want to go to another game that Cole pitched, it was too tough to watch. Then I heard he threw 50 pitches in the first 2 innings and I was sure here we go again. What a relief, the Pads self destructed but we saw jacks by Sweeney and Werth!
Cole was all business after the 3rd… totally.

Phillies fans. the best in the world.

  172. BravoMan

    August 29, 2010 at 7:07 pm

“Phillies fans are the best in the world”, “Phillies fans are passionate”. Right, I mean, who else leads the world in tasered fans? Google the word “tasered” and you’ll see the words “Phillies fan gets….”. Puking on each other and letting their children drink a Bud. HMMMM, yep, sounds like class and passion to me.

By the way, y’all go on the road and sweep one of the better NL teams, yet, you STILL only gain a measley game on the Braves. Must be frustrating.

  173. Mostone

    August 29, 2010 at 7:17 pm

  180. Desibrave

    August 29, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Hello Denizens!! First of all Congrats on the sweep. I am truly impressed. Phillies pitched great in the series.

Having said that, you gotta a major worry that phillies are not scoring enough runs. They scored something like 15 runs in the last 7 games, That is not going to do come september when you play a lot within the division.

NL East is going to give a hard time for Phillies if they don’t score runs..,

and before that they have couple of high scoring teams in LA and Rockies to deal with..,

  181. spsyd

I agree with you on this team scoring runs, but we are slowly getting rhythm with that so it is on the up and up.
Trust me I am not looking past any team or any game with this team, I am just not convinced the Braves will be able to finish what they started, with a team like the Phillies(such a resilient team) on their heals.

    Desibrave,

One bad week (3-4) after 4 great weeks (20-5) doesn’t worry me as much as you wish it did. It’s impossible to play .800 ball for much more than a month. I’d be more worried as a Braves fan that our team had a bad week and STILL swept the best team in the NL. Food for thought….

  184. Lefty

    August 29, 2010 at 9:29 pm

Andrew you’re right. It’s not a joke it’s true, I couldn’t agree more. This one mystifies me, I have no idea why we can’t hit the junk. Maybe they didn’t scrimmage against Jamie enough !

  185. Reality Sets In

    August 29, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Why do Phillies “fans” use injuries as an excuse over and over? The Braves have lost Chipper Jones for the year. Martin Prado, Jayson Heyward, McCann, and the setup man Saito all missed more than two weeks each with injuries. O’Flaherty, one of the best left handed relievers missed two months with mono. McClouth, the starting centerfielder, has missed almost the entire year with a concussion and is still out and feeling the effects. Troy Glaus, player of the month in May, has been on hobbled knees all season is on the DL. Derek Lee is now out…on and on. All teams have injuries. Quit whining about it and win a game at home against the Astros.

  186. DiamondbackMac

    August 29, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I’m a Braves fan who likes to go to other teams’ blogs just to read what is being said. This is the first time I’ve commented on one of them. This isn’t the only blog where obnoxious fans from other teams come to gloat (something I would never do). There are even a few Philly fans who go to my favorite Braves blog and do the same thing. Just thought you might like to know you’re not alone in having to put up with such obnoxious fans.

  187. sportsphan

    August 30, 2010 at 9:08 am

@ Reality sets in: Total up all the games your players have lost and see if it exceeds 575, which is the total of games lost to injury that the Phillies have had, according to the broadcast on Saturday. And the players we lost (ALL of the positions except for right and left field. starting pitching AND the bullpen) were key performers. Oh, boo hoo that McCann lost two weeks. Utley lost almost two months…and Chipper isn’t performing anything like Howard or Utley anymore, so his loss isn’t all that awful. Did you ever lose two of your catchers at once? Give me a friggin’ break.
