Remember that playoff atmosphere from the last Braves-Phillies series? Well, with the Phils hell-bent on emptying the bench and the best record in the National League locked up, there’s not really a whole lot for La Furia Roja to play for. Of course, you could say that knocking the Braves out of the playoffs would be reward enough, but the Wild Card (to say nothing of the NL West race) will be decided in California this weekend.

For the past two months, the Braves and Padres have been stumbling like two drunks toward the finish line, and it looks like Atlanta has been the less incapacitated of the drunks leading up to this weekend. Any Atlanta win or San Diego loss will guarantee the Braves at least a one-game playoff for the Wild Card.

Kyle Kendrick will make his last-gasp case for a spot on the playoff roster tonight. Kendrick’s two starts in Atlanta this year were arguably his two best–eight innings of four-hit shutout ball on April 20 and seven innings, one earned run, five hits and four strikeouts on June 2. Of course, both of those starts turned out to be one-run losses, but I guess you can’t have everything.

Today’s lineup: Rollins SS, Francisco RF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth CF, Ibanez LF, Dobbs 3B, Ruiz C, Kendrick P

Victory LagerYour gameday beer: Sweetwater 420
This is the signature beverage from the best Atlanta-based bottler this side of Coca-Cola. Sweetwater 420 is a light, crisp ale. It’s not as hoppy as most IPAs, but while it’s not a particularly serious beverage, it’s from Atlanta and it’s pretty tasty. –by Michael

I’d like to see Kyle Kendrick go deep into the game and win tonight, ending the season with a winning record. Also, I would like to see Gload in there tonight and playing left field and Sweeney playing first base. Give Ibanez and Howard an extra day off. But….. I am just a fan.

    @ bart

I think once SD is eliminated charlie will really play the B team.
He owes it to the integrity of the game to play at least something approaching a major league line up. Imagine if we were SD fans. Wed want at least that. Its enough we are resting the staff. I think madson and Lidge get in 2 games though here.

Anybody have any thoughts on who the Phils will pursue in free agency? It’s probably a little early to consider this, but Jose Lopez may be available. He plays for Seattle and 2010 was his only bad year. He will be 28 next year and plays third, short and second plus both corner outfield positions. He has some pop hitting as many as 27 homers in a year. His OBP could use some lifting but he may be a solid all-round utility player since we are not getting any younger and he could help out at multiple positions. Remember Mariono Duncan and how valuable he was playing many positions for us back in the early 90’s?

Actually looking at the standings if Sd beats SF and we beat ATL tonight its gets more intersting.

    If that happens

    SF 91-69
    atl 90-70
    SD 89-71

Puts alot of heat on ATL. ATL fans should be happy we dont need these games or theyd be in trouble. I bet Charlie wouldnt mind knocking the Braves out at all.
I guess ill monitor that game after the phils tonight.
    I want to win tonight.

@ Bart I think the big “new” player next year is dominc Brown.
Oswalt is signed through next year. So I suspect another mid range guy. Doubt any position player will get anyone too excited.
What Id really like to see is some pitchers for the pen. Middle or late innings even. Cant have enough good closers.
Even sign a closer. Love ow lidge has been but hes nto getting any younger and hes been banged up last few years. The Twins have 2 closers now 3 if you include the injured guy who was out for the year.

San DIego closer Heath Bell may be available. He is one of the best in baseball averaging over a strikeout per inning. He has 45 saves and a 1.86 ERA so far this year. He may command more from the Phils than what we are willing to sacrifice. I just do not see Lidge beyond this playoff series. He has the heart of a lion but it seems his arm and body are just caving in. I mention Jose Lopez because he is a utility possibility. But, who knows. We have the playoffs to worry about. I just cannot get excited about this series. But I am trying.

Belive me we want to win especially tonight. Its a good jab at the Braves. And looking at line ups and pitching match ups the phils should win tonight. Then you can watch SD-SF and id Sd wins the noose tightens on the braveless. Whom I have no love for.

Love to have Bell and Lidge and Madson.
If phils got Bell at 8 -10 mil Id have no issue with it.
In the 7th 8th or 9th hes dominant.

Next year’s lineup is going to be Lefty heavy, I think it may go something like this:

    Vic
    Polanco
    Utley
    Howard
    Rollins
    Raul
    Ruiz
    Brown

    Let’s go, Kendrick!

I think he finishes the season strong.

Man, when we passed through San Diego, I think we stole their mojo. They just went into a complete tailspin after the Phillies series and then the Phillies tore it up through LA, San Diego, Colorado, and then back at home.

Andrew, you are such a freakin moron. I swear, I hope you’re just a teeny bopper with access to a computer because I’d honestly hate to think you’re the typical blind, ignorant Phillies fan.

For what Bobby Cox has done for this depleted club is remarkable. #3 and #4 hitters in and out of the lineup all year, weren’t producing and now one of them (Chipper) is gone for good. One of our better starters (Medlen) is done for good. Prado (team MVP) is done for good. Yet, here they are fighting for a playoff spot. Sounds like a lot of people (outside of stupid, drunk Philly fans) wouldn’t mind seeing a resiliant team make it all the way, especially for a HOF managers final go at it.

biz, no, I mean stomped and banged like what greasy mop Werth does to Utley’s wife. Is Utley mute or something? He acts weird like he has no pulse. I’d knock Werth stank a** out messin with my woman.

The Braves had won 104 games.
Glavine won 22 Maddux 20 Avery 18 and smoltz 16

They are in the discussion as the best rotation ever.

    BUT

Let’s get something straight about Bobby Cox…… First, he is a wife beater and a bully to women–always has been. Second he has the emotional maturity of a severely stubbed toe. I cannot think of any manager, except for possibly Larry Bowa, who is more obnoxious. Cox, with a Hall-of Fame pitching staff, won one World Series in more than a decade. Even rotten-luck Gene Mauch could have done better. Cox did not hold this team together. He has solid players who did that. Basically, he is a short-fused manager who grew from the ranks of utility player. He stunk as a player and never forgot how fortunate he was to be selected by Ted Turner to manage this exceptional team.

@Jay: If they win tonight (and the chances just got better), they might figure plugging Jamie in for an inning might give them a really good chance to gauge his readiness?

The Braves CAN hit, just like the Phils CAN hit. They’re just going through an ill-timed slump.

If Jamie does pitch, it’ll probably be his tryout for the postseason. If he can’t do it, we won’t see him again till spring training.

Of course, it’s all speculation at this point.

I’m starting to feel a bit sorry for Dobbs. At the risk of sounding like Wheeler, you can see the guy is trying. That being said, I don’t want him on the postseason roster while he’s trying and not cutting it.

@Andrew: I agree with you. Most likely, we’ll be seeing Jamie in the dugout.

But there’s always that one in a million chance. Jamie always seems to draw that one in a million chance.

  106. Brooks

    October 1, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Kate I guess if anyone could be ready after such a long layoff it would have to be someone like Super Jamie. But, I just dont think its practical to have him on the staff in the post season. Perhaps if we had seen a few weeks of him but not based on 1 appearance, maybe.

  107. Andrew from waldorf

    October 1, 2010 at 9:53 pm

You try anyone at third over wasting a roster spot for dobbs in case 2 other players maybe get injured.
Need brown who can do so much more. Hell if Polanco and Valdez both get hurt heaven forbid let Brown play 3rd.
But Dobbs is not on a playoff roster.

Ive felt sorry for dobbs for a ling time.

  108. Tracey

    October 1, 2010 at 9:53 pm

Re Moyer: Perhaps they want him officially on the roster at the end of the season so he qualifies for another ring if they win the World Series? Maybe they’ll give him an inning of bullpen work to qualify him? Just speculation; I’m not sure what’s required to qualify.

  109. Kate

    October 1, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Yeah, you’re probably right, Brooks. He has been throwing, but unless he’s able to actually get some work done (with precious little time for it), there’s not much chance for him.

Charlie and Dubes will do what’s best for the team. If someone else from the bullpen is what’s best, Jamie takes a seat.

  113. Kate

    October 1, 2010 at 9:58 pm

If nothing else, Charlie will probably give him a chance, especially if we win tonight. Maybe it backfires, maybe it doesn’t.

We’ve already got NL East, home field advantage, best record in baseball in the bag. I can see Charlie easily justifying giving Moyer an inning to work with.

He’s made what could be called questionable judgment calls with far less justification before. He lets him try, Jamie realizes he’s done all he can and walks off feeling good that he was given a chance, or Jamie does well, and can pitch an inning or two in a couple of the postseason series.

  114. Andrew from waldorf

    October 1, 2010 at 9:58 pm

You dont qualify for a ring. They give it to you. Eaton got one in 08.
Moyer has his 2010 ring locked down!

I see it another way. It is more pessimistic. If hes going to retire he doesnt want to retire on an injury. So he wants to go out on his feet like Charles Barkley did.

That said I hope he comes back. Hes one of my all time favorites.

  115. Lefty

    October 1, 2010 at 9:59 pm

I’m a big Jamie fan. He does not have to be on the post season roster to get a ring or a share of the winnings. Can be voted in by the players, and the FO can give a ring to anyone they want, if they feel they’ve made a contribution- Cody, Sardina, anyone.

I think all the braves myths have been put to rest

    Except this one

The Padres and Rockies collapsed just enough more than they will.

They arent a threat this year if we someone played them in the playoffs. And I bet they are within 3 games of .500 next year either way. They are a nice average team who took care of a mediocre NL. A team like the Blue jays is way better than them and will never be in contention in the near future.

I used to get mad and defend the NL when peopel would put them down. And say AL is superior. But this year. To me every team in the NL is a disappontment except the Phillies and the Giants. Thats a lot of under achievers.

What can I say about whooping a$$ without our best out there. Must be degrading for Brave fans. Great to see Jimmy hit that salami , not great for Dobbs with 3 k’s. Bullpen looked good so far. As far as who makes roster , Charlie will need less pitchers this year than last year. I think he’ll bring 11 pitchers and 14 position players time will tell. I tend to agree with you Andrew. There are 3 teams I consider to be the elite this year. Phils of course are #1, Rays and Yanks are right there. I lost a lot of respect for the pretenders in the NL this year. Rockies, Padres, I never put too much confidence in the Reds – that team feasted on the sludge of the NL Central but lost considerably to the tough teams.

The Phils might take this first series in 4, they could sweep. The NLCS, no stretch that the Giants will outlast the Braves and the Giants may be the only team to take the series to 7 games.

I love what Hamilton and Vlad have done in Texas but they are just not deep enough to outlast either the Yanks or the Rays. And I think the Twins will go down easily too.

Yanks and Rays in a classic and whoever gets out of there will make a classic series vs our Phils. I’m seeing Red – Phils win in 7 (and I have tiks for game 7…).

I dont think the Yankees are a lock at all to make WS. Theyre pitching problems are not a mirage. Look up the ERA’S , Pettitte is getting old fast , Burnett just stinks , Hughes is a kid but not bad. After CC they have nothing compared to our big three. I really dont think theyre gonna be there , plus that 8-15 record coming in is no fluke either theyre pitching has been getting hammered. The Rays have a better chance to make it. Not sure about Texas havent seen much of them this year. Twins have a nice club , with a little luck anyone can make it in the AL theyre all pretty good teams.

Think if SD doesnt get beat by the lowly cubs last night.

Its really sad. I submit the gap between the phils and the rest of the league is the greates gap Ive ever seen since Ive been folowing the sport. League means NL not MLB

  242. Lefty

    October 1, 2010 at 11:16 pm

it was just end of season garbage time. No problem

  243. Sam

    October 1, 2010 at 11:18 pm

I don’t think the Phillies should be carrying Greg Dobbs or Mike Zagurski into the play offs. We don’t need any weakest links!!!

  244. Lefty

    October 1, 2010 at 11:18 pm

Big Red Machine was pretty big gap. We played them and Morgan, Rose, Bench Perez et al tore us up.

This is the best Phillies team ever, no doubt in my mind. And maybe in time they may be even better than the 70’s Reds. But check this out, no long slumps for this team.

    October 1, 2010 at 11:32 pm

So that means we dont get to see the game-crap. Oh well Poker tomorrow night anyway.

  261. Andrew from waldorf

    October 1, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Considering Bench is my all time C and Morgan my all time 2b
And rose my all time util. I understand

But my point was more how bad the rest of the NL is this particular year. It really is disgraceful top to bottom. Dodgers, Cards,Mets, rockies, padres, etc etc etc

Even SF if they lose these last 3 whats that say?

  262. miked63

    October 1, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Andrew , Dodgers were very good in the mid-70’s .
Phils won the division in 76,77 and 78.
The Reds beat us in the NLCS in 76 and the Dodgers beat us in the NLCS in 77 and 78. –It was torture for us losing 3 straight NLCS’S
Lefty remembers the pain , I was only 13 in 1976 but will never forget the pain of 3 straight years of being so close. Thats what made 1980 so sweet , —- ASTROS/PHILS NLCS OF 1980 is one of the best ever.
Nolan Ryan versus Steve Carlton game 5 — yea baby !
5 game series back then , 3 extra inning games of the 5 !

  263. Andrew from waldorf

    October 1, 2010 at 11:38 pm

    I remeber the 80 nlcs
    and Terry puhl very well

I was 8 and learned hatred right there. Guy got a hit EVERY time

  264. Brooks

    October 1, 2010 at 11:39 pm

Arguable Andrew, arguable. You’d pick Perez over Bench, Foster, Rose and Morgan (MVP that year)?

Honestly, I dont know who I’d pick but I tell you what, match up the Phils of 2010 in a 7 game series? I’d pick the Phils.

  265. Andrew from waldorf

    October 1, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Perez was mr clutch though. Is all I am saying. Probably least known of that team but the guy who got it done. I was mentored in baseball by a guy from cinncinnati who was there for the big red machine. Ive heard alot about them.

  266. Andrew from waldorf

    October 1, 2010 at 11:42 pm

The phillies pitching kills the big red machines.
Nice to think this team is comparable
need to make the series and win it

    then we are better 🙂

    October 1, 2010 at 11:43 pm

80 NLCS w Houston BEST EVER! Anyone remember Del Unser? he was huge that series. And Manny Trillo

  270. miked63

    October 1, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Yea lefty — Reds were great , how bout the A’s though , right before the big red machines dynasty the Oakland A’s won the WS in 72,73 and 74.———-reds won it in 75 and 76 but the A’s won 3 in a row and the big red machine gets more hype

  271. Lefty

    October 1, 2010 at 11:47 pm

That’s my point , first we have to win it this year, then make the comparison.

  272. Lefty

Those A’s teams sported three 20 game winners , in 1973 for example
Catfish hunter 21 wins , Vida Blue 20 wins , Ken Holtzman 21 wins and of course Rollie Fingers in the pen.

  279. Andrew from waldorf

    I just heard on ESPN
If we tie the Braves tomorrow and the Padres are awarded an extended walkover non-competeive clause game tomorrow that the Mets will take the wild card.
David Pelfrey really scares me and the Mets playoff pedigree is some scary stuff. Not to mention the great Beltran.

    Lets play who we draw.
I remember when the Panthers beat the Rams in the NFL or the Cardinals made the championship game it looked like a break for the Eagles. They lsot both times.
    Lets play who we meet.
