With this obnoxiously long layoff in between the NLDS and NLCS, we’ve had wayyyy too much time to break this series down. Really, there isn’t much left to say. You know the players, you know the situation, you know that the Phillies are on the cusp of history. Now, it’s time to play the game.

Playing the game for the Phillies is none other than Roy Halladay. All week it’s been Halladay & Lincecum, Lincecum & Halladay, and rightfully so. With three Cy Young’s between them already, and likely a fourth on the way, it all comes down to which one can keep the other team off the scoreboard. Halladay hasn’t given up a hit in the postseason, as you know, and honestly, with the way the Giants offense is built, I wouldn’t expect too many in this game, either.

Tim Lincecum, some said, had the better game in the NLDS. Sure he gave up two hits to Halladay’s one, but a few believed it a little more dominating. You’d be an idiot to believe that, however, Lincecum was about as good as it gets in Game 1 of round one without being perfect. The Phillies have had varying success against “The Freak” in the past, so it’s hard to tell what we’ll get here. You can’t really look back before 2010, because this Phillies team is very much different than past seasons. However, in April, the Phillies rallied against he and Brian Wilson for a 7-6, extra innings victory that proves he can be beaten if patience is used.

Patience. Can the Phillies use a little? Like Axl Rose said, all we need is just a little bit of it and the Phillies will need to heed his advice. Lincecum wants them to chase balls down and out of the zone, working off his low-to-mid 90’s fastball. The question is, can they. I wouldn’t expect too much in the way of offense here on either side. But it’ll come down to who puts together that one inning of a few hits. They’ll be hard to come by.

A few things to think about:

  • The winner of Game 1 of the NLCS has advanced to the World Series 15 of the last 18 years. Only the 2006 Cardinals, 2005 Astros, and 1991 Braves were able to buck the trend.
  • In the playoffs thus far, the Giants and Phillies pitching staffs have combined for a 1.04 ERA. Game 2 starter Roy Oswalt gave up the most earned runs in the opening round with three over five innings.
  • With a series victory, the Phillies would become the first National League team ever to win six NLCS’s. Atlanta, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati have each won five.
  • Over the last three postseasons, the Phillies are 7-0 in Game 1’s. Their last game one loss was against the Rockies in the 2007 NLDS.
  • Roy Halladay has one three straight and seven of his last eight at home, including the no-hitter against the Reds.
  • Tim Lincecum is 0-1 lifetime at CBP with a 3.66 ERA.
  • Carlos Ruiz is a .345 lifetime hitter in the NLCS and has reached base safely in each of his last 23 postseason games. Chooch is red hot in October.
  • Buster Posey led the NL in hits in round one with six. He, too, is on fire.

Game 1 Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Rollins SS, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Halladay P

Victory Lager

Your gameday beer: Troegs Nugget Nectar

Poured a medium amber color with a thick white head that laces down the glass nicely. The aroma has an initial blast of citrus hops, grapefruit, pineapple, caramel malt, and floral sweetness. It was named one of the top beers in the world by Beer Advocate, whom I trust. It’s also a local beer (kinda) coming from Harrisburg, PA. It should be a nice beer to sip on for tonight’s game while you’re, hopefully, grilling steaks and asparagus on the grill. My mouth is watering for that. And a win. AND A WIN! by Pat

It’s been way too long a break. I’m counting down the minutes now and I’m scared to death of the Giants. Their pitching staff is the only one in baseball that’s comparable to ours. If we win this series, whoever we play from the AL in the World Series will be a piece of cake.

I’ve noticed that Timmy starts the first inning of big games all amped up. He overthrows at the beginning of big games. I normally subscribe to the patient hitting theory too, but the freak often times grooves meaty fastballs and leaves his slider up in the zone to start the game.

IMO – jump all over him to start, especially the first inning. Then when he settles down, and he almost always does, let patience take over. If we can scratch out a couple in the first and then make him work high counts, we can beat this guy.

All the makings of a classic
    Can Halladay tie vandermeers record?

If somehow the phillies lose it isnt the end of the world.
This series will officially become a series when the Phillies lose a game.

Like i said last night there are 6 SP in this series better than Sabathia and Hughes and Peteite.
Its the toughest series the phils have faced in this playoff dynysty. But this is also the best phillies team by a good bit.
Good luck to any team that eliminates the Phillies. It will take alot to beat them in a 7 game series.
    Go phillies!

  9. The Dipsy

    October 16, 2010 at 7:09 pm

That’s right. Nothing left to say. The Dipsy’s prescription for victory:

    1. Please, please, please….Jimmy, Shane…take some pitches. We know the slider is wicked but please try and make Lincecum get it over.

    2. When on, run, run, run. I have no problem, not even with Ryan up, watching Shane or Chase get thrown out trying to steal.

    3. 3 runs is probably all it takes. I assume Roy will not be letting the Giants score so we can execute points 1 and 2.

Selective at the plate. Agressive on the base paths. And don’t forget to move those runners. Go Phils!

The Giants have the worst offense in baseball. They are terrible. The best pitcher Halladay is letting a scrub beat us. Same pitch twice. A disgrace. Howard is not clutch. Two men on. OVERRATED. Rollins is terrible. Werth, go away already. THE FREAK WILL BEAT US. I said if we do not hit we lose 4-2.

  42. mg52

    October 16, 2010 at 9:33 pm

I don’t think this is over yet, but there’s been a lack of offense on the Phils’ side. I don’t know how radical an assessment this is, but they – to me at least – to hit more when Valdez is in the line-up. J-Roll still seems to be a bit snakebitten by his injury, and Valdez seems more capable right now of delivering those slap hits. And Cousins has squeezed both pitchers too much – not much of a help, either. But let’s see what happens – go Phils!

  43. Bart Shart

    October 16, 2010 at 9:34 pm

The ump is not calling low strikes. The feeling of dread is all over the place. Howard choked when the money was on the line and we will likely lose this first game of the series. It is just one game. We can surely bounce back.

  44. Bart Shart

    October 16, 2010 at 9:35 pm

Also, the layoff may have been too long. We lost our edge.

Funky Philly doesn’t deserve anything except a slap in the face…..and a bath, but that’s besides the point.

  47. sportsphan

    October 16, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Can we trade Rollins? He is worth less than nothing in the lineup. I want Valdez in there for the next game. I know we can bounce back, but will we? This business of leaving men on base and striking out in key moments of the game has been going on for season after season. Sooner or later it has to come back and bite you. The ball/strike calls are completely mystifying me…..This is what I’ve been afraid of ever since the Giants made to the post-season–that we would play them and not hit. Giants will win the World Series. I’ve been saying it to my family for over a week now. And, to Ryan H., maybe those of us who are afraid of the Giants are smarter than you are!!!

  48. BravoMan

    October 16, 2010 at 9:41 pm

I heard the Braves are very interested in bringing in former Brave Milt Tompson as their new hitting coach. Too early to tell, but he can help us with not only our hitting, but on how Philly hitters think as well. That’ll help out our pitchers.

    GOOOOO GIANTS!

WOW some of you need to grab a beer and get to sleep. Get used to tonight because this is how these games are going to be….for 5 or 6 more of them.

Inches off of Raul’s glove….1 inch from a strikeout of Burrell at that same at bat.

Game 2 is why we signed Oswalt, to pick up a bit of a hiccup from Roy. I dont care how good H2O is, you dont go 11-0 to win a World Series.

The Giants are a good team, no huge surprise tonight. We had our opportunities, they captialized a bit more.

    New day tomorrow.

IT’S ONLY THE FIRST GAME BUT ……………. JIMMY ROLLINS DOES NOT LOOK LIKE JIMMY ROLLINS (STRIKE OUTS), VICTORINO HAD ALL STRIKE OUTS. WHEN HE HAD 3 BALLS AND NO STRIKES (LAST INNING) … YOU JUST KNEW IT WAS COMING DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLATE … WHY TAKE IT … HE SHOULD HAVE JUMPED ALL OVER THAT BALL. THEN, HOWARD CAN’T HIT OFF SPEED PITCHING FOR CRAP AS USUAL AND WERE IN TROUBLE ANYTIME WE FACE DECENT PITCHING ON THE OTHER TEAM. I HOPE WE ARE MORE AGGRESSIVE TOMORROW!!!

    October 16, 2010 at 11:18 pm

ok so that is why you play seven games, Little Roy has to come up big tomorrow for the Phightens score 3-4 runs and R2 will take care of the rest I hope. going to have to win 2 in san fran. I always thought the bats would be hurt by the lay off especially Ryan. We should know by now that they never make it easy on us, Keep the Phaith and win tomorrow and go on from there

  110. Scott in D.C.

    October 16, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Rollins should be hitting in the 7-hole, if at all. He’s horrendous. Hasn’t squared up to a ball in a month.

Home-field advantage is gone; offense continues to sputter; and Joe Blanton is on the horizon.

    I’m not panicking!

  111. Bob

    October 16, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Ill take Rollins bat over Valdez’s bat anyday and twice on Sunday, I dont care how much he is stuggling.

Remember those times when Charlie kept his faith in Brad Lidge? How did that work out for everyone?

If Rollins can walk, Rollins plays. End of story. The lineup as a whole needs to hit better and they will.

It’s not the end of the world. One loss. Look at what the Yankees did after Cliff Lee and the Phillies handed them the most horrific game of their life. This game was disappointing, but it’s just that. One game.

    October 16, 2010 at 11:26 pm

The Phillies are 3-1 in the postseason. That’s .750 baseball boys and girls. They keep playing .750 baseball, we’re going to have a pararde.

  114. MikeB.

    October 16, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Victorino, Rollins and Ibanez; a combined 0 for 12 with 6 strikeouts and 7 runners left on base. Not sure who looked worse at the plate, Victorino or Rollins. As many are posting, Howard just cannot hit the good breaking pitches. Bats are going to have to come alive to win this series.

@Bob – I agree, but it wouldn’t hurt to switch Jroll and Ibanez in the BA.

I was quoting one of the guys mentioning steam rolling and juggernauts. It didnt work. sorry Id get mad at these types the last week. But you didnt have to be from NASA to see this coming. Like the Braves being a mediocre team even though they made the playoffs.

Now its really on. Must win tomorrow.
I believe the Phillies still win the series though.
I watch the sport enough and follow it enough to be able to tell you whos a threat and who isnt.
Oh and BTW Halladay just got nullified. As I tried to explain to people. And thank god this is a 7 gamer and not 5.

Fox News said our big guys were 3 for 16 tonight and that’s not good. They also said that Howard has to step up NOW!!! Waiting for Howard to get warmed up may be too late in a best of seven series. They also said that Jimmy Rollins looks like he doesn’t know where He is very passive at the plate to say the least. Victorino was 0-5 tonight and we need him on base. Charlie needs to hold a team meeting and start cursing!!!! 🙂

  124. Andrew from waldorf

    October 16, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Gload channeled his inner Greg Dobbs not his inner Matt Stairs.

    The Giants have “it”
The phils have a better team though.

The Phils will beat Brian wilson at least once this series.
Howard is what he is. He will look terrible then all the sudden he will hit the big homer and win a game.

If Jimmy cant run what is the point? Let him run and if gets hurt so be it.

    October 16, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Fox news just said that our guys were 3 for 16? against the cy young winner of the last two years, and this year’s best closer, what a surprise. Phils in six.

    Cursing will do the job.

I was very disappointed in Shane tongiht.

He is one of my guys like Ruiz. Usually comes up big when the chips are down.

There aint no phil hughes or Colby Lewis though. Its Jonathon Sanchez tomorrow followed by Matt Cain.

  129. Andrew from waldorf

    October 17, 2010 at 12:01 am

Wilson isnt all that. Phillies batters bailed him out a little.
Was over 30 pitches today. If hes needed tomorrow. I like our chances.

Lidge was up to his usualy tricks. Was glad he and Madson got in tonight. Was needed.

  130. MikeB.

    October 17, 2010 at 12:08 am

Have to shrug off the close game. Ross was fortunate in getting the two home runs; what are the odds that he will duplicate that feat again in this series? Burrell should have been called out on strikes before he hit the double that Ibanez dropped out of his glove after hitting the wall. Uribe hits a grounder right up the middle for an RBI. Giants got some breaks and did just enough to win the close game. Phillies had their opportunities but come up a few hits short.

Shane better step up tomorrow. Phillies as a team better step up or theres big trouble.

Giants got the breaks? How ’bout all those close calls Lincecum didn’t get? How many K’s would he have had if he had a good ball and strike ump?

I HATE, HATE, HATE Jonathan Sanchez. That little creep has one of the worst attitudes in baseball, so I won’t mind a bit if Philly lights that douchebags world up. However, I feel SF wins the series in 6.

I can’t get the picture of that pitch that burrell shoulda been rung up on outta my head. It’s haunting me. as soon as the ump didn’t call him out I knew it meant trouble. couple that with Raul not catching that ball which he shoulda caught (reminded me of luzinski against the wall on black friday against the dodgers). that’s what swung the game. shoulda won.

Jeff I read the following post the other day on another site, it made me think of you.

“I’m angry! It took 69 days to get the miners out – even longer to plug the leak! Obama’s had over 19 months to fix the economy! How long do I have to sit at my computer commenting or watch TV until somebody can get something done around here?”

The CY winner from the last two years was also on the mound.

This was a bad game. The times that the crowd was in it, the phillies just died…lack of hitting and driving in runs again. sad….

  141. BravoMan

    October 17, 2010 at 12:25 am

Maybe the Phillies have been watching too much Jersey Shore between now and the last series. They didn’t look focused, like “The Situation” was on their minds…. or Sammi. MMMM, little idiotic Jersey bimbo with those legs.

  142. BravoMan

    October 17, 2010 at 12:28 am

Raul Ibanez looks exactly like “The Situation”. Is that his little brother? Also, is that a wad of chew in his mouth or sunflower seeds? Seriously, that’d make me puke with all that tobaccy in my mouth all the time. Wonder if he ever swallows it when he’s running.

  145. BravoMan

    October 17, 2010 at 12:34 am

Lefty, I don’t think so. The Braves should be fine next year. Need to get healthy and they will be. Prado and Chipper getting hurt set the team behind, not only on offense, but defense as well. Conrad is who I assume you meant by disgrace with all the errors? Well, yes. That was embarrassing, but he’s a career minor leaguer for a reason. Also, we fought SF with everything they had with a C lineup against their A lineup. All one run games. Not bad for a “disgraceful” team, imo.

  146. Buck from bucks

    October 17, 2010 at 12:39 am

Jimmy Rollins continues to be a colossal disappointment – what’s this guy batting in post season .066 – its no longer a slump but a trend. Charlie needs to drop this guy in the lineup.
