NLCS Gameday: Phillies vs. Giants, Game 4

Philadelphia Phillies (1-2) at San Francisco Giants (2-1)

As demoralizing as yesterday afternoon’s loss was, a 2-1 deficit is hardly the end of the world. After all, this was exactly the position in which the Phillies found themselves through three games in the 1993 NLCS, against a far superior Braves team–and we all know how that ended. Tonight, the Phils take another crack at San Francisco, and the national audience gets its first chance to see Joe Blanton.

Blanton, for his part, recovered in a big way after a rocky start to the season. In the Big Easy’s last 20 starts, he’s 8-1 with a 3.81 ERA. For his postseason career, Blanton’s 2-0 with a 3.89 ERA in eight appearances. What’s more, he’s been a Cody Ross killer (who’d’a thought that would become important?). According to ESPN’s Stats & Info blog, Ross is 3-for-11 in his career against the former Kentucky Wildcat, but has struck out in each of his last four plate appearances.

Opposing Blanton will be Madison Bumgarner, a 21-year-old lefty out of Hickory, N.C. Bumgarner, a former top-10 pick, had the dubious distinction of being about the fifth-most-hyped rookie to make his debut in the NL at age 20 this season. If you’ve got a name like Madison Bumgarner, you either get stuffed in a locker every day of your life or you grow up to be a total badass. That Bumgarner started and won a postseason clincher on the road against Derek Lowe, 10 weeks after turning 21, suggests the latter. Still, he’s only pitched 121 major league innings, so he’s far from a known quantity.

In other interesting news, Raul Ibanez has been relieved of his place in the starting lineup. After leading the Phillies in most offensive categories in the NLDS, Ibanez has gone 0-for-11 against San Francisco. With Madison Bumgarner, a lefty who relies on power breaking stuff, on the hill, Uncle Cholly has seen fit to remove his aging left fielder and replace him with righthanded-hitting Ben Francisco. The former Cleveland Indian had a .284/.344/.557 slash line against lefties this season and was hit in the head in his only plate appearance thus far this postseason.

Game 2 Lineup: Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Polanco 3B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Rollins SS, Francisco LF, Ruiz C, Blanton P

Victory Lager

Your gameday beer: Left Hand Sawtooth Ale

Seems to me like this postseason’s narrative has been the performance of various lefthanded pitchers. All due respect to Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum, we’ve been hearing a lot about the continued domiance of Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, and the emergence of Jonathan Sanchez, C.J. Wilson (today’s shellacking notwithstanding), and Bumgarner (God willing, ditto). With that in mind, today’s offering comes form Left Hand Brewing Company in Longmont, Colorado. This is a solid, medium-bodied American ale that took home bronze in its category at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival. You won’t stop going to bars that won’t stock it, but if you try it, I dare you not to like it.

There once was a fellow named Raul
Who made us all want to skip school
    But now he’s cold
    And getting too old
So maybe now Ben Fran can rule!!

    (at least for one game)

While it is true that Francisco is starting from coming off the bench; has not been playing regularly and facing pitching on a daily basis, you have to go with the line of thinking and percentages that Ben will be batting right against a left-handed pitcher and will get a better look at the pitched balls compared to lefty hitter Ibanez who has been struggling. This potentially could be a smart change for the Phils.

I do feel bad for Raul, but I’m hoping he takes it for what it is. During the regular season, Charlie would absolutely stick with him and I’d applaud it. But this is Game 4. We need production at the plate as well as in the field. And I very much doubt this is a permanent benching.

Dear Chase Utley: Save being a Reds player for Halloween, okay? Thxbye!

Like I said, we’re up against a real contender this time around.

I’ve got PHAITH in Big Joe and the bullpen. Shame we probably won’t see Contreras again tonight, because he was filthy on yesterday.

This is Game 4. Maybe Blanton blasts a homer.

I am loving this lineup. Replacing Raul was the right move. I imagine Raul understands as he is both struggling and simply struggles against lefties. This move smells like a move that will pay dividends.

    October 20, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Oh Chuck. . . er, hahaha. Like Kate, I feel bad for Raul. He did his job this summer. But hey – get in the cage & keep hitting, amigo.

Jay – May it go from your keyboard to God’s ears (as my southern grandmothers always said).

I swear I do NOT CARE what helps now, just do it. If suiting up Tinkerbell does it for the line-up – then get her into red & white pinstipes 20 minutes ago! I’m beyond it. I want them to win in that dreaded phone-field that I hate so much. And I’d like one of our alleged power bats to hit one of those silly colored boats in the water.

  9. Kate

    October 20, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Hey, Phan, that’s not to say I don’t support the benching. I do. This is the playoffs. I support Charlie’s loyalty in the regular season and I’ll give him a long leash even in the playoffs. But you’re not going to bench Rollins or Utley, so it’s got to be Ben Francisco for Ibanez to shake things up.

I think Big Joe comes through tonight. He’s been practically an afterthought ever since the playoff berth was clinched and he’s got the opportunity to shift the momentum of the series and ram home field advantage right up the Giants’ asses. It also helps that he’s slaughtered Cody Ross at the plate. This is a perfect opportunity to remind everyone what we really do know, that he is still here and relevant and important to this team.

Big Joe for the win. Being as it’s Game 4, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see multiple big hits, maybe even a homer from Big Joe.

    Phils in seven.

The Giants have simply outplayed us in two games out of three. The Giants are playing up to their own level. The Phillies have not been.

While I don’t agree with the fourth line, the rest of it is spot on. Awesome, Chuck. A lovely bit of verse to carry us into this game.

let’s do this phils. shake up this 21 year old punk. I think the key is patience and working out good at bats. making this guy throw pitches. don’t go up there hacking. make him work.

I think we pretty much know what we can expect from blanton. probably 6 innings and 2 or 3 runs.

  45. AC in NJ

    October 20, 2010 at 8:28 pm

This is the worst umpiring crew I’ve seen in a long time, as bad as the Phils bats are. Victorino drew a walk in the first, but the ump called strike. Bumgarner just balked, no question.

This team is hitting under .200 this series. I dont care who’s pitching thats just pitiful. Cole pitched good enough to win yesterday. I want to stay positive but Joe hasnt pitched in a long time and he looks out of sorts so far. He tends to settle down after a couple innings so we’ll see. Two wild pitches gives sf 1st run sure
hope thats not the difference. Very happy with playing Ben in lf, better matchup and Raul is really struggling. Will the Phillies we know ever show up again this year ? Win tonite and we win this series , I’ll take our guys in a best of 3 with 2 at our park anytime. That how big this game obviously is . Charlie will be secong guessed a long time if Joe lets
him down. Then again if we continue to hit below the mendoza line it wont matter. Thats 13 straight innings now the leadoff man has not reached base (3rd inning). Maybe tonite they’ll show us some fire and actually score some runs , not looking to good so far though.

How do they come up this small in a must win game? Overconfidence? Really, really unbelievable. A good High School pitcher could beat them right now.

  108. jeff of Nova

    October 20, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Kate I would love to disagree but if we do not hit this inning or next we will have nothing…. they have all seen him now no excuses

But that is this teams MO when they have never seen the pitcher they can’t hit him, if they have not seen him and he is a lefty they certainly cannot hit him

  139. AC in NJ

    October 20, 2010 at 9:07 pm

at least this is Blanton’s last inning. He’ll be lifted for a pinch hitter in 5.

if I see another Halladay no-hitter commercial, I’m gonna puke. i had a bad feeling that game 1 of the NLDS would end up be high point of the playoffs.

  140. SAM

    October 20, 2010 at 9:07 pm

What the hell was Jimmy looking for? That ball was right over the plate!!! Now we’re going to make another rookie pitcher look like a Cy Young winner. 🙁 Also, anyone see a shot of Utley? He looks really out of it.

  141. jeff of Nova

    October 20, 2010 at 9:08 pm

Nevermind JRol go sit back down

    GRRR!!!!!

I am watching 2 more innings then I will have to watch something else… this is becoming a waste of a good night!

I never thought I would say that about this team, but they look like they have NO HEART NO NOTHING!!!!!!!

I mean honestly if this is how it ends this is what you do!

    YOU dump
    Ibanez
    Werth

and bring in Brown and get a FA that will bring some life to this team!
Utley and Howard are showing they have no leadership cause they cannot lead by example

  183. jeff of Nova

    October 20, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Ryan pretty sure you are wrong there, but either way that was a great throw and an even better play by Posey I really think is the best player on that team

  184. SAM

    October 20, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Hey Ryan, anytime ex Phillies play against the Phillies they seem to excell. Isn’t that the pits? Anyway, this game should be tied by now. We let the Giant’s off the hook.

  186. jt

  187. jeff of Nova

    October 20, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Yeah Chooch should have never been sent, he is decent speed for a catcher, but he was on first and did not get a head start on a sharply hit line drive to center

  188. miked63

    October 20, 2010 at 9:26 pm

phillymike : your absolutely right gotta holdup a catcher running there
and were winning right now if sam does the LOGICAL thing.

Sam – your wish is granted. Good move by Charlie now, you can argue it was one batter too later, but Joe did OK given the circumstances and I give Charlie credit for trying to get him through 5.

Its up to the Phils to get that run back next inning!

  250. SAM

Charlie’s always a day late and a dollar short in pulling Blanton. We should still be up by 2 runs..

Vic was slow on getting that ball out of his glove too.

I am now worried with Contreras

between gurbij and romero they couldn’t get 6 outs if you spotted them 5. no middle relief any where to be found – and it was apparent all year. they’re going to need to get out of this just a run down if we’re going to have a chance at all.

  318. Geoff

The thing that I am really annoyed with is the Coaching decisions tonight!

Charlie, I have always liked him, but he has failed miserably tonight with that Durbin inning.

Sam blew the Chooch running home.

I agree with Jeff on his comment “Josh Hamilton is clutch”. If it’s Rangers-Giants, it’s a 4 game AL Sweep. Of course, I’ll be part of the 98% of the US population not watching that WS. I’m sure MLB is thrilled about that matchup.

    Hey Charlie,

Go Fishing please let someone else coach this team…. you are failing miserably how do you expect to motivate these guys to come back and win the series.

Maybe we bring in Sandberg for a coaching position maybe a 3rd base coach? How about a hitting coach? Pretty sure Ryne was good at that

  393. Ryan H.

    October 20, 2010 at 10:42 pm

    October 20, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Hope the phillies are taking lessons from Posey on how to hit.
I’m gonna bring up durbin AGAIN , Charlie really blew it. Once you get the lead why cant Madson pitch a couple innings ? You CANT go down
3-1 . You dont have to worry about needing Madson tomorrow especially with DOC pitching who will give you his absolute best and probably go 9 innnings. Why wouldnt you pitch your BEST arms in this situation this is basically an elimination game. Durbin should only come in with a BIG lead not a 1 run game. I was screeming at the TV when he brought Durbin in.

howard was on track for 40 plus homers and around 140 rbi before he turned his ankle down in DC. for all intensive purposes he missed about a month of the season. which also happened to derail his usual late season surge. this is the only full season in which he didn’t hit those numbers. and to be honest he was having his best season since his mvp year before he got hurt. he was also hitting over .300.

hamilton has never even played a full season. he’s good for streaks (which he’s on now) but has never put together a solid full year. howard meanwhile is an iron man who plays every day. howard’s NLCS last year was better than hamilton’s ALCS this year.

    It’s game on now!

Two plays at the plate- Ruiz tagged out, Vic’s throw a little late- that’s baseball.

Maybe should have brought Raul in for Ben to face the righty, easy to second guess.

Anyway- looks like we could be here a while

damn it, I can’t believe Madson didn’t use the fastball. 2 strikes on the guy…this has been the story of these games – HOW MANY 2 STRIKE HITS DO THE GIANTS HAVE? I bet it’s a majority.

  523. miked63

    October 20, 2010 at 11:14 pm

Charlie never plays small ball , the best managers in business or in sports are flexible not hard headed. The teams been strugling , jasons on 2nd with no outs you have jimmy bunt him over ! Pass ball or fly ball gives you the lead. If I was in the dugout madson comes in instead of durbin and were winning right now. This is one of Charlies worse managed games. Look how good madson looks , he hasnt been pitching his arm is fine. F##king Durbin are you kidding me ? I’ve never seen us bunt with a man on 2nd and no outs but you have to think out of the box this time of year. Do you guys believe this is tied ? It feels like were losing 5-0 the way weve been talking on here. Including me

Bravo Man…you S*CK. What’s over is the Braves season…you coughed up a chance at the division like the p*ssies that you are, and without Cox you are not gonna be back there anytime soon. Your pitching is even more overrated, chippers ready to go to pasture and I don’t think Braves win 85 games next year.

Meanwhile, Phils win the division again.

    So piss off, Bravo Man.

Charlie did what he thought was best. He was wrong. It’s that simple.
We can still win this and do not be surprised if we do. However, we really need to tinker with the lineup this off season. We simply have too many old bats in there, and that includes both Rollins and Ibanez.

So the Giants beat Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt – what we thought was our ticket into the WS and another world championship. Of course, lack of offense killed the Phils but tonight, the Giants got to Roy2 without really a problem.
What now? Halladay pitches tomorrow night but Cholly already said this game was pivotal – this was crucial – does that mean they gave up?

  665. biz

    Sam,

Chuck refused to pull Durbin when he was getting smacked around. He sure wasn’t going to pull Roy2 after a dribbler and an opposite field slap.

Chuckles has no clue. Never has. Never will. But these guys wont play for anyone else, to listen to some knuckleheads tell it. Nope. They will only play for Cholly. Cause he’s their guy. And they love him. And he’s a players kinda manager. And they love him. Yep. They’d walk through walls for him. Cause they love him. They wouldn’t play for anyone else. Only for Charlie. Without Charlie they’d be scrapping to get to .500. Yep. That’s it.

    This is NOT Charlie’s fault.

No one else could have led this team to the playoffs this year.

I blame the offense for not producing despite the horrendous plate and first base ump and then the rest of the blame falls on the failure of the umps. Aside from Durbin, our pitching was great.

Bottom line, it falls all on our offense, but the umps had a hand in it as well.

( i like that kid)) the offense will get better, they wont accept this season, and there cant be as much injuries as this year… if you think about it’s a MIRACLE they got far… Hope they win one for Doc then go balls out 6 and 7 for fans, simply put, THEY GOT TO WANT IT

I think the last two seasons have demonstrated how much luck is involved in winning a World Series. That 2008 team caught a ton of breaks. This team does just enough to lose to an opponent with far less talent. Too many peaks and valleys in 2010.

Next year doesn’t look any more promising from a roster standpoint (losing Werth), but maybe we catch lightning in a bottle (like the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007).

If it was all hands on deck why did Durbin see the mound at all. I know he’s had his moments but his stuff is just not good enough , 88 mph fastball that doesnt move , when he gets behind and his curves not effective he has to come in and he gets hammered. I know I said it three times but that decision cost the game , that and two of our big guys not producing tonite , jimmy and chase. At least jimmy had the big hit sunday whats chace done the whole series ? Ryan and Werth did theyre thing. We dont deserve to win leaving Werth on 2nd with no outs and not scoring

That game just had a losing feel. Every night there are parts of the lineup that are just black holes. Runner on second nobody out in the 8th. You have to bunt or Jimmy must pull the ball…instead….Jimmy special….weak popout. So frustrating.

I can’t see the Phillies lineup doing anything tomorrow with Lincecum but don’t see how the Halladay loses tomorrow. If it goes back to Philadelphia there is a chance.

It is so frustrating when your team loses to an inferior team. I think Ruben has some work to do for next year. Firstly, there is no way in hell they can lose Werth. He is just so valuable in the middle of the lineup.

As a final thought…what are the percentages in the playoffs of lead-off walks scoring? It must be like 95%.

  691. brooks

    October 20, 2010 at 11:54 pm

I gotta tell you the part that worries me is the Roy2 pitching part

Now the middle of the order has confidence that they can get to him if they face him again. This was not an elimination game so you don’t pull him out there should of put out Romero or KK.

Now Roy gets the loss and hoping he is still able to go the distance in Game 6 if Doc can get us there

The Giants have too much fire … they want this really bad. If you looked a Madson’s face when he was pitching tonight … that was determination. I haven’t seen much of that coming from the rest of the team. These guys were last years National League Champs so, what the hell is wrong with them? It’s do or die tomorrow and I don’t want to sound negative but … how often do these things come out in favor of the Phils when they have their backs against the wall? I wish they would rise to the occassion and show the Giants what they’re made of.

  695. MikeB.

The baseball season’s not over yet.

As for Charlie, I point you to the DL list for the season. It was amazing that we even got into the playoffs this year with everyone but Werth and Ibanez spending significant amounts of time on the DL. Show the old man some respect. Without his leadership, our season ended somewhere in September.

Bad offense, bad umps, that’s what cost us.

Blanton did everything he could, but the writing was on the wall with the terrible calling behind the plate and the missed call on the balk.

Question: How hard is it to win three straight NL Pennants?

Answer: No one has done it since 1944, it’s f’n hard.

We can talk mismanagement, lack of offense, big three not coming through, bullpen sucks, contracts, etc.etc.etc. but the fact is-

Winning three straight pennants is almost impossible and we still have a slim chance of doing it. I’m sure I’m all alone in this opinion right now, but I’m really proud to be a fan of this team, and I’m proud of the team. Sometimes you just have to live with the other team beating you, that’s baseball.

Then, Halladay still be able to pitch were there a seventh game. No, tomorrow is do or die … no other options … end of story. I also can’t figure out why Domenic Brown as a pinch hitter tonight.
