I did some math Tuesday afternoon, following the Phillies’ Game 3 loss to San Francisco, to nail down my plans for the rest of the series. For instance, I discovered that the Phillies were 3-0, going into last night’s game, in postseason play when I wrote the gameday post, so I volunteered. I also chose my spot to watch the game based on past performance: Jersey’s American Pub in Lindenwold–the Phillies were 6-1 all-time in postseason play when I watched the game there, the best record of any site at which I’d seen 4 or more playoff games (the Flyers, incidentally, were something like 8-2 during last year’s playoffs when I was there, too. The place just radiates good karma). Ordinarily, I’d have picked a shirt and hat based on track record, but I couldn’t pin any juju, good or bad, on a particular article of clothing.

Of course, I’m well aware that there is absolutely nothing I can do to influence the Phillies’ performance one way or another. But I needed to feel involved, with so much on the line, superstition was all I had left. I am, after all, the guy who made his grandmother sit in the exact same spot on the sofa for the entirety of Game 1 of the 2001 NBA finals. I’m the guy who  And despite going to my lucky bar, writing my lucky post, the wheels came off. And that’s how we all started taking comfort in the 2003 Marlins, the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox, and the 2010 Flyers. Down 3-1, there’s nothing left we can do for the Phillies–it’s all in Doc’s hands now. And all we can do is hope.

By this point, we know all about the Giants–who’s good, who’s bad, who’s not, who’s not. With Tim Lincecum on the mound, and Brian Wilson, most likely, good for at least an inning at the end of the game, the Phillies’ best chance at extending the series is to get to the soft underbelly of the Giants’ pitching staff–Ramon Ramirez, Santiago Casilla, and Jeremy Affeldt, the middle relief. Otherwise, it’s a matter of Halladay being sharper and luckier than Lincecum. If we’ve learned anything from the first few games of this series, it’s that the difference between the Giants’ and Phillies’ starters on any given night is a matter of luck. With righty Lincecum on the mound today, we’ll see the Phillies’ base lineup: Raul Ibanez is back on the field, and Chase Utley and Placido Polanco have been returned to their original spots.

Game 5 Lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Rollins SS, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Halladay P

Your gameday beer: Sierra Nevada Porter

In memory of better times, I give you the Gameday beer from Game 4 of last year’s NLCS: Sierra Nevada Porter. For those of you who don’t remember immediately, that was the game that ended in Jimmy Rollins’ walk-off hit against Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton. Pat Gallen described it last year as having “a smoky flavor with  hints of dark chocolate in the aftertaste. It is remarkably smooth and an overall great tasting genuine porter.” Here’s hoping this potent porter portends more good NLCS memories.

This is the Giants’ best opportunity to win the Series – Lincecum pitching at home. And they’re well aware of that.

After we win tonight and the Series moves back to Philly, anything can happen.

On a quieter, more thoughtful note, it’s been a pleasure hanging with all of you this year. I’m glad I started posting regularly. Can’t always say that about the good ol’ Internet.

Now let’s do it nine more times!

The DOC is in the house and he’s ready to break some faces!

We have experience on our side. Been there — not nervous.
BRING IT ON. We love adversity. We love being the underdogs!

I never get to post during the game threads (no home computer). I know, I know. Things being what they are right now, I’ve had to cut out stuff. And I wanted the MLB package, so . . . no new computer & broadband, etc. Anyway —

GO PHILS! GO PHILS! GO PHILS!

Keep the phaith guys! Blog for me. I’ll check in tomorrow a.m. for the good news! Talk then.

Green St. Pat’s Day Utley jersey (the ones they wear in Clearwater on March 17th) for me.

Maybe a little Luck-O-The Irish will help.

Also, toying with going with JUST the radio. NO TV. Just me, a dark room and Franske and LA describing the action. We’ll see.

Kate, you’ve been a real pleasure on here. Thanks to YOU for posting regularly. I think we’ve all been a little more enlightened with your insightful commentary. Hopefully, you’ll be part of the Hot Stove off-season on here (But let’s not talk about that just yet…AFTER the parade maybe!!)

I just thought about it, that shirt I wore last night also didn’t work on a game late in August. Maybe one of my jerseys: Werth or Rollins. Or maybe the v-neck retro, est. date, gray, Phillies script in burgundy.

    And some Buddhist prayer beads.

    One step at a time.
Win this one and they have a lot of pressure on Sat. And then sunday…

Hard for me to believe these first timers can knock out the champs.

The last win eliminating a champion is usually the toughest.

what id really love to see is the bats really explode like the old days. Not that it will happen just saying it would be very nice.

Echo Kate’s sentiments- You all have made this season very enjoyable. Let’s keep it going. Phils in 7

Most important for tonight- Timmy will come out in the first inning amped up, just a little off with his command. Last game by the second he was settling down, got to get to him early! Go Phils!

  35. Ken

    October 21, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Im shocked that this team is on the brink of being eliminated. The days of just getting to the playoffs are gone. If they dont at least GET to the World Series Im not going to lie, it’ll be a bitter disappointment. Not looking good early. Down 1-0 already. Im shocked that we are in this position.

  36. Ken

    October 21, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Jeff I agree with you. I dont sense the same hunger. They dont bring it to the park day in and day out like they did in the past. You see glimpses but its not consistent. Ive noticed it this year even more than last year. Someone has got to get this team fired up and quick !

I need to get fired up somehow. I’m still not over last nite and I feel pretty vanilla right now cause my expectations have diminished so much. No matter what, I also had a great time my 1st year here talking baseball almost every nite. Hope this isnt the end . I agree that anything short of the series is a huge letdown. Getting down 1-0 sure didnt help how i’m feeling. Whoever said they need to be aggressive is right , get behind Timmy and its over. With that being said why did Werth take that pitch ? Trying to keep the Phaith guys and girls but not feeling it yet. Anything is possible , one game at a time right ?

Lincecum is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good pitcher, but his pitches tonight really have no bite to them and look hitable. Halladay shuts them down the rest of the way and the Phils win the other 2 at home.

  94. BravoMan

DesriBrave, of course the winning days are among us Braves fans. Just don’t tell a few here that because the Phillies have always and will always rule the universe.

Fredi will do a good job. Wren will get us a good hitter for the middle of our lineup. Yes, it should be a good offseason and a very good 2011 season.

  95. Matt

    October 21, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Bravoman – Have you seen the scoreboard? How are they done?

Mark my words. Halladay gives up 1 more run max, and the Phils take it back to Philly. SF has ZERO, yes ZERO chance of winning games 6 and 7 against Oswalt and Hamels on the road.

  96. matt

    October 21, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Nice inning but come on RYAN AND JASON ! Two more ducks out there and they do nothing , I wanted and we needed more there. That pitch Howard missed right before the k was right there , he needs to put that one in the cove thats what he really gets paid for and its 6-1 with Roy on the mound. Not trying to be debbie downer but i want to put a whopping on them not just win so we can turn the momentum around.

The Braves have no defense. The platoon CF and LF. They have no 1st baseman or 3rd baseman.

I mean seriously, look at the Giants 1-9. Huff at 1B? The fattest left side of the IF in the history of the game (that might be an actual fact, I’ll have to check it out). A waiver wire over the hill guy (sorry Pat) in LF. Another cast off in RF.

The only guy in the lineup who is legitimately a good hitter is Posey. The rest are playing WAY over their heads, and in a 7 game series, the law of averages will catch up with these guys.

So everyone, step off the ledge, and enjoy the WS next week.

biz, Freeman is their 1st baseman next year. He’s a highly regarded prospect. Great glove and decent power potential. Chipper stays relatively healthy than he’s a solid vet to have hitting 2nd or lower in your order. If he can’t than Infante or Prado can man 3rd and do a greta job. They’ll get an OF or two. They have plenty of pitching to deal if they need to.

Bravoman – You’re right. In fact, I actually fear the Braves more than the Giants at this point. The only issue with the Braves next year is going to be the starting rotation. I thought Hanson would be better this year, maybe he’ll make the big jump next year – or he’s destined to just be another #3 starter in the bigs.

Not that being a #3 is a bad thing, I just thought he had ace potential.

Geez, we’re rival teams in the same division that face off a ton during the season. I thinks it’s fine to come on other teams boards and talk a little smack. Phillies fans do it on our boards and I don’t bash them left and right unless they’re so out of line that you feel forced to.

That’s the difference, I think, between Philly fans and most other fans…. y’all take this stuff to heart like it’s life and death. It’s freakin baseball. That’s all. Are YOUR lives that boring to take all this stuff so seriously?

Hey, look at Halladay, a guy a lot of people compare Hanson to as far as physically and their stuff. It took him years to develope into how great he is now.

You need one more strike, don’t get fancy.

  211. Ryan H.

    October 21, 2010 at 9:46 pm

jeff: if you don’t consider Ryan Howard to be a great player you aren’t just a bad phillies fan: you are an all time bad baseball fan. Ryan Howard has all time historic numbers. five more years like this and he’ll be a first ballot hall of famer. he will likely retire as the phillies all time homerun leader and probably be considered the greatest phillie of all time

BravoMan – The issue is the Phils really don’t have anyone to fill that position in the minors. Sure, Polanco could technically slide over, but then we wouldn’t have a 3rd baseman.

The problem with the Phils minor league system is they really just focus on “toolsy” OF’s and hope they hit with one of them (I.E. Dom Brown) and power pitchers, who are a few years away.

Plus, if they trade Utley now, I’m not even sure how much value he has, considering his contract. I think they’d be selling low on him.

  223. matt

A lot of full counts, but considering that walk was a K, it looks like Doc is settling in. I would not take him out, and you know he does NOT want to come out. He’s a competitor, let him pitch till his arm comes off.

  231. BravoMan

    October 21, 2010 at 9:55 pm

As for Utley, I’m not sure about his long term future to be honest. Take away his April’s and he’s been in a serious funk for the past two years.

I know some Phillies fans will hate me, but I wouldn’t be shocked to find out that he was on some sort of PED 05-08. He seems like a “win at any cost” type guy.

Pure speculation, but it wouldn’t surprise me (heck, no MLBer would surprise me at this point) either.

Ryan – Yeah, I’ve heard the wear down thing too, but that’s getting old. There are a lot of middle IF’s playing day in and day out in the league. He plays hard, but there’s only so long that excuse holds up.

I could def see him boozing it up a lot. I don’t know how many of you guys picked up on this, but they did a close up on him in the dugout (he was just staring out into space) and he looked beat as hell. He’s aged a lot over these past 3-4 years.

    Ryan H,

Jeff is a piece of sh*t. Not only does he think that 137 RBI per season average is something a player who “sucks” could do, but he has made references to my mother and sister because he disagrees with me about baseball. All the while, this idiot thinks Chase utley (who has been the Jeltz of the series) walks on water. Did I mention he’s also a NY Giants fan?

I am so sick and tired of seeing Ross Gload – he has nothing, nothing at all to offer. Sweeney is frothing at the mouth to play.

pretty fortunate that Francisco got that one. He’s always swinging at the first pitch. not really a ben fan.

    October 21, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Mike Sweeney’s a nice guy, that’s what. And he’d be in line for the Hall of Fame if his back hadn’t been going out on him for five years.

I am happy looking at all those defensive errors by the Giants..,,

Darn idiots they won against braves due to Braves’s Defensive errors and it is coming haunting them back…,

  488. AC in NJ

    October 21, 2010 at 11:01 pm

that’s true – good point Philly Mike. But you could still have batted Sweeney and brought Francisco in for defense in the 9th.

I don’t see any way you can pitch (Starting anyway.. an inning or two is possible) Halladay or Lincecum in game 7. That would be on 2 days rest, which is insane.

  563. Matt

    October 21, 2010 at 11:16 pm

wxdavid – Have fun being a fan of one of the few teams in history to be up 3-1 and lose a series. It’s really inevitable.

Don’t feel bad though, the 3 wins were really a result of players playing above their heads and the Phils not playing up to their potential. It will be over soon, the suffering will be great, but you’ll learn from it.

AC NJ – Actually, I think the Rangers lose tomorrow night and Lee gets the win in game 7. I think the Rangers are making a potential big mistake not starting Lee in game 6 – you have to go for the series win when it’s on the table. Anything can happen in a game 7, and even though the Yankees haven’t hit Lee at all, stranger things have happened.

now the million dollar question is can roy o dominate again?will his confidence be messed up from that game last night?will the feel confident they can beat him since they beat him in that game?roy o should be pumped and ready after suffering the loss in the game last night…just gotta take it one game at a time i hope that crowd is rowdy as anything and has the rally towels waving non stop and messes up the giants…hopefully werth homerun is a spark the long ball will start to come around if we can get the bats going we can beat this team as we can see they struggle to score runs even when their playing at home…just glad were out of at&t park boy they weren’t kidding when they say that park gives the phils trouble.

Howard and utley 0 RBI and we made it to game 6
    that in itself is amazing

I spent a good part of this year saying Werth is gone and needs to go.

Honestly Id keep him over Howard and Utley now.
He is the MVP so far in the playoffs. Easily

We saw what Roy Oswalt did in Game 2 after getting smacked around a bit by the Reds.

Oswalt will not allow his season to end picking up a loss on relief and his first career loss at the Bank. And he’s already proven that he can do it all himself.

The home field advantage is going to be huge going into Game Six.

Whatever happens i am happy the turds in SF didnt get to celebrate there.
Ive predicted since the series started the Phillies will beat Brian Wilson 1 time. and I stand by it. So we have that going for us.

I just have a pet peeve abotu some of the more arrogant posters. the Giants have already proven formidable. and if you have been here all year you get a pass anyway.

I wont be jacked up till sunday. Win sat and ill be jacked up for sunday.

That last win vs a champion is so hard to get. The phillies are champions. Will be tough to get that 4th win.

Well, I guess I gave the Phillies too little chance. My “Giants in 5” prediction is no more.

Just for the record…I have been rooting like crazy for the Phils this series. A prediction is just a prediction.

Back at Philly, anybody who sees Brian Wilson in the bullpen should throw razors or cans of shaving cream at him… Apparently someone stole his, so he could use some.

Yeh, jt, the Phils seem to be forever snake bit in San Francisco and I think a lot of it has to do with the big dimensions of AT&T Park, and the weather conditions that generally affect that ballpark. Too bad that the Giants did not build their ballpark inland out there. The Giant’s good pitching staff has played the biggest part in it though. The Phillies hit a few balls in this series in ‘Frisco that might have been home runs at CBP.

I never did say the Phils would have it easy but, I never thought they would be looking up for the last 3 games either.

That being said, I’m pretty confident coming back to Philly for the last 2. Of course, I have been wrong so far, I supposed the Phils to be up 3-2.

I have a valid argument…… Why the hell are there braves fans in this forum. they got eliminated. they are supposed to be crying to there mommas and drinking till they get freak nasty with their cousins. The 2011 season is a year away. have fun with your new manager too.

Troutman – Money order works for me.
