Phillies stay sharp for 96th win, beat Braves 11-5

Even though they have the NL East wrapped up for a fourth consecutive year, the Phillies have no desire to muck these final games heading into the playoffs.  Heading into Atlanta to play the rival Braves, who are also fighting for a playoff spot, the Phillies can still influence the outcome of the Wild Card race.  Currently the Braves lead the Padres by two games in the Wild Card.

They put that task, for game one, on the shoulders of Kyle Kendrick.  Originally Charlie Manuel had set up his rotation so that the big three of Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels would again pitch against the Braves to finish off the season.  Having clinched the division earlier this week,  Manuel decided to throw Kendrick to line Halladay up to start Game 1 of the NLDS.   We learned today he will be followed by Oswalt in Game 2.  Hamels is the likely choice for Game 3 although nothing has been announced yet.  He will start the final game of the season against the Braves.

Kendrick pitched well enough to get onto the postseason roster I think.  He threw five innings giving up five hits and two runs on 95 pitches.  If and when Kendrick is used in the playoffs, he will be coming out of the bullpen.

The offense looked to stay hot heading into next week’s NLDS.  Jimmy Rollins hit a grand slam during the five-run sixth inning, his first since coming back.  Ryan Howard had two RBIs and Carlos Ruiz had three hits for the Phillies.

Placido Polanco, who received a cortisone shot Wednesday, returned to the team but did not see any action.  Manuel did say he wanted Polanco to get some at bats before the end of the season, so you can expect to see him this weekend in some capacity.

And the Braves continue to roll on.
Somehow I wish the Mets could back into the playoffs.

Bobby Cox should be ashamed that he set it up for JRoll to bat right handed when he hit the Salami. I respect what Cox has meant to the game years ago, but it’s clearly over for him. He brought in the Lefty knowing Rollins was coming up. Violation of Baseball 101 .

Rowand just hit a 2 run bomb pinch hitting for the Giants.
6-3 Padres and the Padres look scared.

Really think there should be some rule grandfathered in to get the Mets as the wild card.

It was announced on doc, oswalt, hamels.

I love what Matt Latoce said. The Giants had to buy there players. Didnt the Padres bring the juice at short and a couple of other players. Maybe if you pitched like an ace you would of stayed on top.

The Giants didnt buy Pat the Bat. He was released and they signed him to minor league deal.
And make no mistake about it. He is the reason they will win that division and play the phils in NLCS.
The Padres look scared in SF. We hand them a win over the braves and they get a 6-0 lead and they have dwindled it to 6-4 already in the 7th.

I am casting a ballot Mets for playoffs in 2010. No one else wants it.

It would have save Jerry Manuel’s job (as manager) if the Mets were still in the running for the playoffs. 😉

The Braves have just a 1 game lead in the wild card.
    How disgraceful can they get?
How about they just forfeit the wild card to the Mets or Nationals?

MLB can’t give away the WC.

It doesn’t matter anyway. Neither the Reds, Pads or Braves stand a chance of making it to the NLCS. The Phillies and the Giants might as well just get right to it.

I get the feeling that Charlie Manuel won’t be asked to introduce Bobby Cox at his HOF induction.

Imagine if we can get a three-way tie by the end of the regular season. Phillies have to beat the Braves today…and Padres beat the Giants… Man, that would make things interesting for the final day of the season…

Imagine ther Giants having to send Lincecum and co. on Oct. 4 o5th… ditto for the Braves (Hudson, Hanson) and the Padres (Latos)… !!! –I’m getting way ahead of myself but the possibility is still there…

From “What if the Giants, Padres and Braves all finish tied? First it would be Giants at Padres on Monday, with the winner being declared the division champion. Then a day later, the losing team would play in Atlanta to decide the Wild Card. “
