UTLEY UPDATE, 5:00 pm: Chase Utley is not close to running as he’s still dealing with some pain during drills, according to Ruben Amaro. They will not proceed further until the pain subsides, meaning he will not run just yet. Utley will continue with drills until he’s comfortable doing more.

Here are some quotes from Amaro talking with the media just a little while ago, thanks to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

A rivalry renewed? Let’s not go that far just yet. Although, it is Phillies/Mets, so anything can happen. What will happen tonight is the temperature will drop. So if you’re reading this, bundle yourself up. It will only be in the high 40’s to 50 by gametime with a stiff breeze. Parka!

Welcome Cole Hamels to the party. He might be the 4th starter, but he’s still a #1 in everyone’s book. He’s opposed by Chris Young of the Mets. Hamels struggled throughout Spring Training, mostly with command. The velocity on his fastball seems to be there. Can Hamels take the torch from the first three guys – Halladay, Lee, and Oswalt were pretty darn good – and keep the ball rolling? Each of those pitchers has exceptional command. Hamels will need the same.

Against the Mets in his career, Hamels hasn’t had a lot of luck. Over 80 innings in 13 starts he has a 3.38 ERA, but recorded just a 2-8 record. You can basically throw out the old numbers for now. New season, new faces, new ballgame.

LINEUP: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Rollins SS, Howard 1B, Ibanez LF, Francisco RF, Ruiz C, Valdez 2B, Hamels P.

Fire Island's Red Wagon IPAYour Gameday Beer – Fire Island’s Red Wagon IPA

Tonight’s selection comes to us from Fire Island, NY, that crazy place off Long Island where cars are prohibited. And it is this quirky phenomenon that give us the name of the beer since red wagons are what locals use to transport goods around the island. Ah, simple times call for a simple beer. This golden beer is balanced with floral and fruity hops and is perfect for a September evening. Have it with some grilled pork chops.
GO PHILLIES!

        April 5, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Jay, Krukdriver and most of the regulars are still here. Haven’t seen much of Andrew, and nothing from jeff yet. (not sure if that’s a bad thing) The season’s young, I’m hoping everyone will be back soon.

      April 5, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Still here, Lefty! Howard’s strikeout was my cue to go do the dishes. We’ve had some good chances to get back into this but the wind and – oh – Double plays seem to be getting in the way.

      • Lefty

        April 5, 2011 at 7:21 pm

Could be one of those nights. You know when you win 100, you lose 62

    April 5, 2011 at 5:59 pm

That’s the spirit, Lefty! They came back in the bottom of the 9th Friday; they can do it in the bottom of the 3rd today!

  24. Tracey

    April 5, 2011 at 6:35 pm

@tavian: Yeah, Cole’s a California boy. He doesn’t like pitching in the cold.

  25. Tracey

    It ain’t pretty, but I’ll take it…

  26. Lefty

    April 5, 2011 at 6:37 pm

He pitched fine in the cold in postseason 08. This was just a bad outing, that’s baseball.

  27. Lefty

    April 5, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Young up to 80 pitches in the 5th. We’ll get to him, or get their pen in the game.

The only thing missing from a spectacular Tuesday night was a Phillies fan getting tased, and that almost happened as one of their finest ran on to the field to hump second base. This after another Phillies fan cost his team an out by interfering with Carlos Beltran in the fourth. Yup, there’s your most loyal fan base in America.

Charlie Manuel needs to keep his bench players fresh in a game like this. Why isn’t Pete Orr, a left-handed hitter, in the lineup against a 6’10” right handed pitcher. Sure Polly got a hit and drove in the only run. Orr needs to stay fresh and sharp. Why isn’t Gload — a damn good left handed bat — playing ? We love ya’ Cholly, but please think about the bench guys. We need them to be sharp. This was the perfect time to do something to that end.

    April 5, 2011 at 7:29 pm

I can’t remember who said it, (Tommy Lasorda, maybe?), but you win 50 and lose 50. It’s the other 50 that count. So this is one of the ‘lose 50’ – big deal. I agree with tavian… get the bench in the game.

  45. Lefty

    April 5, 2011 at 7:38 pm

I guess you didn’t seamy response to you above- If you win 100, you lose 62.

My take is the difference between mediocre (81-81) and division winner is 12-14 games. You just have to win those 14 games and you’re 95-67

    • krukdriver

      April 5, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Can I blame Tommy Lasorda for the math? 🙂

      • Lefty

        April 5, 2011 at 8:03 pm

I make it a habit to blame anyone but myself, so absolutely, Lasorda gets the blame.

It did the last couple of years, but luckily my old computer died about a week before spring training – and the new one purrs along quite nice. No problems at all. (My old computer always seemed to freeze in the bottom of the 9th… men on base and two out – drove me bananas!!!)

the bullpen went 6.1 IP and only gave up one run and Francisco continues to hit the ball well.

Hamels is 1-6 against the Mets since that 2008 proclamation that they are “choke artists”.

Two hits against the Phillies in the third inning for Young, with a whole bunch of other hits in between (including one of David Wright’s four) and Cole Hamels was lifted after two and a third after having gave up six runs. In fact, he couldn’t wait for that inning to end. And lucky for him he didn’t have to. He was gone before it could end so he could get his beauty rest on his memory foam pillow and wake up refreshed enough to plan his next radio interview where he calls the Mets choke artists and lecture us on how other baseball players should act.

    Sleep well, Cole.
