Oswalt Leaves Phillies for Personal Reasons – Phillies Nation

Oswalt Leaves Phillies for Personal Reasons

Roy Oswalt has left the Phillies, who are in Arizona today for the finale of their three game series with the Diamondbacks, due to personal reason.

According to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the team does not know why Oswalt has left. A team official told Gelb that Oswalt was lifted from last night’s start due to ineffectiveness, not because of the personal issue.

More to come…

UPDATE, 2:58 pm: A statement from the Phillies regarding Oswalt’s departure:

“There has been a tremendous amount of tornado activity near Roy’s home in Mississippi resulting in several tragic deaths and significant devastation to the area.  Because of this, Roy is concerned about his family’s well-being.  He has chosen to take time to make sure there wasn’t significant damage to his home, but more importantly, to make certain that his wife and children are okay.

It is almost a year to the day that his parents’ home was destroyed by a tornado which has heightened his concern about the current situation.

We are hopeful that he will rejoin the team for his next start, but will take that day by day.”

Sooooo being a nerd in my mothers basement, I obviously have no life and decided to do some detective work. First, I think I found a possible Oswalt charter flight:

That flight left Phoenix at around 7am this morning and got into Jackson around noon Eastern. Jackson is about 2 hours south of Weir, MS, Roy’s hometown. That tail number, N63XP, belongs to charter company, Mach One Air Charters Inc., so it is definitely the type of transport that Roy O would use

So why did Roy O leave? Simple. Weir, like pretty much the entire state of Mississippi, is under a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION Tornado Watch, which effectively means that tornadoes are gonna form, there’s gonna be lots of them, and they’re gonna be damaging. More info on the watch is here:

Hopefully Weir won’t get hit, but send good thoughts/prayers/vibes to people in that area, cuz it’s gonna be ugly.

I have no idea what’s going on with RoyO but it was very out of character for Charlie to pull him after just three innings. I asked about this during the game-day thread last night, Charlie just doesn’t do that. We’ve seen him go much longer with Joe B, and KK in the past when they’ve let up a lot more runs and hits than last night. So I don’t care what he’s telling the press, there is something else going on.

And the soap opera continues. For the NL easts second place team.

Family should ALWAYS be first and foremost! I applaud him for realizing that! I hope everything is ok, and can make his next start, but family first! And Andrew, just as quick as you can post the “second place team” comment, the Phillies are back in first. LOL. Hopefully the additional run support is the catalyst.
