Daily Debate: Phillies Cy Young Winner

Listen to today’s “Daily Debate” between Pat Gallen and Mike Gill of 973 ESPN FM in South Jersey. Today’s topic is a very interesting one – who is the Phillies Cy Young winner at the 1/3 pole of the season?

There are a few choices on this list, which player would you pick?

If you so choose, give us a vote at the bottom so we can see who wins the argument (for bragging rights, of course!).

Cole Hamels hands down so far.

I’d like to give some props to Antonio Bastardo too. what a revelation he’s been.

Roy Halladay, he’s been the anchor of the rotation.

And small nitpick, but aren’t we 1/3 done with the season, not 1/4?

    Cole Hamels is a beast

I love Cole Hamels, and have been a pretty vocal supporter of his on here . . . . but Halladay has been better this year.. They are both “ACES” in every sense of the word – but Halladay has given up only 1 more ER in almost 16 more innings …. he’s got 4 complete games..

Ryan Madson has been nasty too.. not sure who i’d rank 2nd of he and Hamels – but those 3 are clearly our best pitchers to this point in the season

Cole Hamels no question. Besides that one bad start in the beginning he has been phenomenal.

    What Don said.

I’d probably go Halladay, Hamels and Madson in that order.

I went with Halladay for the simple reason that he has been better than Hamels. The peripherals are all in favor of Doc. Hamels is just moving up the charts so fast because people expect to see what Halladay is going, but that isn’t necessarily the case for Hamels. As awesome as Cole has been, I might even put Madson ahead by a hair. I picked Madson for MVP. And yes that makes sense.

Halladay has been the CY Young guy so far, but Hamels is a close second.

Their numbers get even nastier when you look at FIP and xFIP isntead of ERA.

    Cole: FIP 2.39, xFIP 2.40
    Roy: FIP 2.10 xFIP 2.35

Can we please sign Cole now before he gets ridiculously expensive?

Cole has been great but Halladay is still the guy that, before he goes out, you’ve already put a W down. I’d put Hamels, who is just getting so much better, in a tie for second with Madson.

Cole Hamels no doubt about it. Roy H is a close second. Erase that one bad start an he is on par with Roy.

Dipsy, it’s getting to the point, though, where I almost expect that W from Cole now too. Same with Madson with the save. He’s gonna blow one at some point and we’re all gonna be disappointed…..but rarely are closers perfect.
