Spring Training Gameday: Split Squad Madness!

There are TWO games today. Most of the starters are staying home to play the Braves featuring a start by Joe Blanton and an appearance by Dontrelle Willis. David Hale speculates that this could be Willis’ last appearance in red pinstripes if the outing does not go well. Willis has been plagued by arm fatigue and soreness and part of his contract becomes guaranteed on Saturday. With Jake Diekman (3.0 IP, 7 Ks) and Joe Savery (3.1 IP, 4 Ks) having strong Springs thus far, Willis may become expendable if he does not start to deliver.

The second game matches the Phils up with the Rays. Some intriguing pitching in that game for the Fightins as Joel Pineiro will take the hill to start, Phillippe Aumont looks to build on a solid outing, and Scott Elarton continues his improbable quest back to the Majors. The folks in the Rays game just may be your 2012 Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, barring any surprises. Of note: Bert Clevlen makes his first start of the Spring in that game.

Interesting twist re: Willis. If he can’t get the job done, I’d be happy with Savery or Diekman.

Anyone else surprised by Victorino #3 .. and Pence #5 in the lineup…. its only spring, and not a big deal, etc, but that was surprising to me.

in the real world with that order, I would hope we’d go
Rollins, Vic, Pence, Thome, Mayberry, Polly, Ruiz … (assuming Thome 1b-Mayberry LF would leave Podsednik out)

Galvis again at 2b continues to make me worry about Utley – and the fact that they might be trying to groom Galvis as the long-term solution in post-Utley-Philadelphia …

    Also, Also,
Juan Pierre makes the road trip while Scott Podsednik plays in the home game …. could be just a coincidence, but that tells me they are trying to put some heat on Pierre (i believe their contracts are such that if Pierre isn’t on the MLB roster to start the season, he can opt-out …. but Podsednik wouldn’t have to be on the roster until May or something – meaning they can give him a longer look, and everyday time in AAA if they want)
