Utley Talks Injury, Won’t Have Surgery

“I don’t know when I’ll be back,” Chase Utley told reporters Sunday, after speaking briefly in sunny Clearwater. He said that his knee will not require surgery, and that he will not even look into a surgical procedure unless it gives him 100% recovery, which is unlikely. He will be doing some new rehab workouts to ease himself into his routine. He expects to play this season, but mentioned that it will take time and that he doesn’t want to rush things.

Utley has been battling his knee issues for a while now, and the last two years have really held him back. He missed all of Spring Training last year and the first two and half months of the season.

It was revealed in an MRI last year that he had patellar tendinitis, a condition that affects the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shin. It was also said that he suffered from Chrondromalacia patella, which means that the actual tissue under the kneecap is soft, creating constant, uncomfortable pain.

What he said today was something that we all expected. Once he left camp to see a specialist, we all kind of expected the Phillies to begin the season without their 33 year old second basemen. There were some encouraging things he said, like when he said that the pain he was experiencing was not as bad as last year, and that he would begin some new rehab exercises. This could suggest that he might return to the Phillies sooner than he did last year (46 games), and might be able to play a little better with less pain.

In the absence of Utley, we should expect the Phillies to turn to Freddy Galvis and possibly someone outside of the organization to fill in. With Ryan Howard also on the shelf with no timetable for return, the Phillies offense will surely struggle, so while we don’t want Utley to rush things, we definitely want him back as soon as possible. Get well soon, Chase, the Phillies need you.

Really hope the pitching can carry this team to the playoffs. If The giants cut Teriot lose he might be worth the 750K?

the riot would be a fantastic fit for philly. but i don’t think the giants are going to cut him. i’m pretty sure freddy sanchez is out for a few weeks, and likely to start the year on the DL.

the phillies will find someone in the final cuts over the next few weeks to be their UTL guy.

    A real tear jerker.

When does Howard start stealing $25,000,000.00 per?

I am already crying and its march 25.

Just to fill the mortards in.

The offense sucked with Utley and Howard now for a long time.

But I am sure you will pine for them. And afterall you have Rollins still.

just like I said. It’s all just a big farce to buy chase time. they know they need him more at the end of the season than the beginning so they give him the luxury of not having to play in spring training. they know that sets a double standard and a bad example for the young guys so they make it look like he’s really hurt. even though if this was september he’d be in the lineup tonight.

I would consider Theriot on a cut i would not trade any prospects for him though. If RAJ makes a move i think it will the dumpster diving from other team cuts. Thats unless RooB really just realize his potential mistake in getting rid of Valdez and goes for a more legitimate sub.

Seeing doctors and specialists always seem like the things to do in October right after the season ends, but I’m sure there are legitimate reasons to wait five or six months.

So now we get to watch Chase try and rehab his knees for two years while probably never making any sort of meaningful contribution again. I imagine he knows he’s done as a ballplayer but I imagine he also knows that he’s NOT done as a guy who collects a paycheck. So strap in for two more years of drama. EX: Bill Walton, Carlos Beltran, Johan Santana, Andrew Toney, Jeff Ruland, etc.

Lets just please trade for the LFer and move Mayberry to first. There are no second baseman that can replace Utley’s numbers.

If we can get his 2011 production, that’s not bad, and in fact hard to improve upon.

The drama seems to be largely among a segment of the fan base.

carlos beltran was an all star last year

Beltran had a great season last year.

He hit .300/.385/.525 over 600 PA.

I’d take that any day of the week.

I thought it was interesting when he told McCarthy and Wheeler that his right knee (last year’s injury) does not hurt at all. His left knee is the problem now, but the same routine used to get the right one well, did not work for the left one.

I will not allow myself to get pumped on this. It means nothing really except more of we wait and who knows what is left in the tank.

Need to plan ahead with Chase out of the picture.

Its such as you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, such as you wrote the e book in it or something. I believe that you can do with a few p.c. to force the message house a little bit, however instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I will certainly be back.
