I can’t tell you the last time I was this excited about a series in the beginning of May. Hell, I can’t tell you the last time I was this excited about a series with the Nationals. But I’m stoked for this one. With the Mets falling by the wayside in recent years, Phillies fans could use a new team to pose as the object of their scorn, and the Nats seem to be more than willing to volunteer for the position. It started back in February, when the Nats launched their Take Back The Park Campaign, which caused many local fans to try harder than ever to get seats in Washington for this series, and prompted a “Take Back Nationals Park” promotion here at Phillies Nation, which you can read about here and here. The tension escalated a month later, when Brad Lidge made the claim that the Nationals were probably the most talented team he had ever played on.

Suddenly, there’s a lot hype surrounding the Nats, and the Phillies could have a legitimate rival on their hands. The Nats even came up with an adorable little catchphrase and accompanying fan’s guide to cheering to show they mean business when the Phils come to town this year. Natitude. They couldn’t be cuter.

But empty catchphrases and promotional posturing aside, the Nats are a team with a young core of talent that is building to be a contender. One reason for that is the man who will be on the mound when they take the field tonight–Stephen Strasburg. In his only career start against the Phils, Strasburg was mowing them down, amassing six strikeouts and allowing two hits in 4.1 innings of work. Then this happened. The injury resulted in Strasburg needing Tommy John Surgery and missing the rest of 2010 and most of 2011. He’s back now, and pitching better than ever, taking home NL Pitcher of the Month honors for April. He’s gone at least six innings in all of his starts this season, and has yet to allow more than two runs. The Phillies will have their hands full.

Opposing Strasburg will be Mr. Inconsistency, Kyle Kendrick. In his two starts this season, Kendrick has posted an ERA of 9.00. But he is capable of pulling a rabbit out of his hat and putting together a really good start from time to time, as our own Corey Seidman wrote earlier. For his career, however, Kendrick has not been very good against the Nats, going 2-3 with a 5.46 ERA over 13 games. In four starts at Nationals Park, his ERA jumps up to 6.53.

One thing in the Phillies favor tonight: As bad as they were offensively through the first month of the season, the Nationals were worse. If Kendrick can keep the Phils in it, they may be able to steal a late-inning victory. Either way: Friday night, Strasburg on the mound, that guy Bryce Harper (whom you may have heard of) in left field, a chance to get over .500 for the second time this season, the dawning of a new rivalry–it ought to be a lot of fun.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Pierre LF, Polanco 3B, Pence RF, Victorino CF, Nix 1B, Ruiz C, Orr 2B, Kendrick P.

Whirlwind WitbierYour Gameday Beer – Newcastle Brown Ale

What better way to kick off your weekend than with a Newcastle? Imported from England, Newcastle has a brown color with a reddish glow. The taste consists of soft caramel malts with just a hint of honey. It goes down smooth, making it perfect for a relaxing night in or a night at the bar. Since it’s British, have it with some bangers and mash (sausage and mashed potatoes as we Statesiders call it). –By RD

Take Back the Umpires. Sheesh… that’s three odd calls…

If the umps didn’t screw up two calls at third base in the 7th inning, the Phillies would have scored the 4th run and probably won the game. First, the ump calls the ball field when it was clearly going over the bag on the hit by Ruiz. Then the ump calls Victorino out when it was clear he wasn’t tagged.

Then the home plate umpire was screwing up all night. The worst call was when he missed Ball 4 to Orr on a pitch about a foot outside.

Hate to blame it on the umpires but they really screwed up tonight.

Nats are without Zimmermann and Morse.

Now those are 2 guys who can boost you when they are healthy and they arent getting Geritol attempts to come back.

    Pences fielding is disturbing.
Is it ever going to be addressed? Or jsut close your eyes and pretend. Like the pitch selection of the Phillies hitters and the bad habits of the last 3 years?

I really thought the Phils would hold the Nats and the rest off for one more year.

With the decline of Lee and Doc and the fact that Hamels is a dodger next year all the eggs were in this(2012) basket.
2013 and beyond is scary stuff.

    Thanks Ruben Minaya.

The Nationals had this big promotion about taking the park back LOL

And they have Natitude now. The Nats announcers and front office using natitude.
Get over the inferiority complex. You are going to be better for the foreseeable future.

I respect how the Nats have done things. Including Werth.
Especialy in comparison to how the Phillies have been handled the last few years.

    But its pretty comical.
You just are what you are. A winner or a loser.
    You dont need Natitude LOL

I honestly wasnt thinking it would be till 2013. I was wrong.

Anyone of you kool aid drinkers who think Howard and Utley are better oe more valuable to a team than Morse and Zimmermann.

Please pass me what you are smoking.

    Have a drink Brooksie.

    Hope the Phils win tomorrow.

Not Andrew, he speaks the truth (mostly) its clowns like Brooks & Jeff who keep a running play by play going at times that are boring as hell.

there you go with the name calling again
this site used to be filled with people who commented on every play but, how would you know that? every game there would be about 100 or more posts with comments during the game. no longer. there are just a few.
continue on with your name calling, apparently you get a kick out of it

Find it amusing people do love to take personal shots. Brooks is one of the truly good guys here and maybe one of a handful left.
I take crap for bluntly telling you what the Phillies have been and are and are going to be. Not a homer not rose colored glasses. This is it. And anyone whose been here long term can tell you I am normaly right and know my shit.

Brooks myself Lefty the Chucks the Dipsy. Been here forever.
Where here for a west coast SD game when there literaly over 600 comments on it.

Anyway my getting into it people who take personal shots been over a long time ago.
Unless they have fun with it.

The sits issue is people getting offended by someone saying the Phillies or Howard or whoever sucks. Its just someones opinion. Dont get your panties in an uproar.

If you want to thnk Howard and Utley are going to come back and carry you somewhere. God bless you. Ive sat through the last 3 years of the decline and dont see how them off injuries will get better.

I dont like when people take personal shots at Tracey or Brooks or Jeff or anyone for that matter.
Ive opened myself up for shots. Take them. I truly dont care or get offended.
Its the bickering and complaining thats the problem.
I am glad when anyone posts anything they want.
Except crying about other people thoughts or taking personal shots.
Carry on and cry about how others ruined things.
      Contribute something intersting please.
      Paging Donny

A Papelbon does not a bullpen make. Our pen is in dire straits! Maybe we can use some voodoo and summon Grover Alexander’s spirit into Contreras body – since it’s lifeless anyway.

Worley vs Gonzalez should be a solid match-up. Phil’s need to kick some National rear tomorrow. Go Phils!

Yup, I single-handedly drove everybody away because I enjoy watching a Phillies game! How dare I enjoy watching my team?

It certainly wasn’t the trolls who drove people away, because people definitely love to read posts that trash other posters, especially if they are full of spelling and grammar mistakes and thnly-veiled foul language.

You know, there was a time when PN was able to block me from posting for a few games because I explained what was so funny about pitcher J.J. Putz’s name. I guess they can’t do that any more on this new version of the blog. Or maybe they just don’t care that this blog is dead.
