Phillies (12-12) at Braves (14-10) – Phillies Nation
2012 Gameday

Phillies (12-12) at Braves (14-10)

Philadelphia Phillies (12-12) at Atlanta Braves (14-10)

Roy Halladay (3-2, 1.95) vs. Tommy Hanson (3-2, 3.00)

Time: 7:10 PM, Turner Field
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 85
Media: Twitter and Facebook

In case you haven’t noticed yet, the Phillies have owned the Braves lately. Dating back to last July, the Phillies have beaten the Braves eight consecutive times, including a season-ending sweep to close out the 2011 regular season and send the Bravos home without a playoff appearance. Last night, the Braves and Phillies got into a bullpen game, tied at 2 in the sixth inning. Usually, this is exactly where the Braves want a game–in the hands of their vaunted bullpen. But the Phils would have none of it, scoring 2 runs off of Johnny Venters in the eighth inning to pull out the late victory.

Tonight, Roy Halladay will look to make it nine in a row when he takes the ball for the Phils. Doc’s been his usual self this season, shutting down lineups and getting his team back in the dugout. He’s lost his last two decisions, however, despite allowing just five runs over 14 innings in those two starts. For his career, the Good Doctor has gone 4-1 against the Braves with just a 1.78 ERA. In three starts at Turner Field, that ERA drops to 1.13.

The Braves starter, Tommy Hanson, has been no slouch against the Phils either, posting a 1-2 record with a 2.23 ERA against them in seven career starts.

This match-up will pit the aces of two very good pitching staffs against one another, and has all the makings of a low-scoring game. Which of course means the final will be somewhere around 10-9, making me look foolish, as baseball tends to do to game prognosticators.

One thing to note: Aside from the pitcher’s spot, Charlie Manuel will send out the exact same lineup from last night–something he has done sparingly this season.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Polanco 3B, Victorino CF, Pence RF, Wigginton 1B, Nix LF, Ruiz C, Galvis 2B, Halladay P.

Whirlwind WitbierYour Gameday Beer – Dos Equis

It’s not hard to stay thirsty, my friends, in Georgia, which is where tonight’s game is. Dos Equis will not wow you, but it’s easy to drink. Its brewery is stationed in Monterrey, Mexico, which has a penchant for being quite warm, much like the state of Georgia. Fun fact: Heineken saw a 20 percent increase in sales after the acquisition of Dos Equis in just the first quarter alone. The power of the Most Interesting Man in the World. -By Pat

I think Michael Bourne has become one of the best lead off men in baseball.

  14. Tracey

    May 2, 2012 at 8:58 pm

well, the last two games the Phils won, they started with an early lead, it tied up and then they won. So this is not necessarily a bad thing.

  15. brooks

    May 2, 2012 at 8:58 pm

That really sucked – Cholly will keep him in, unless he keeps giving up more hits now

  16. Tracey

    May 2, 2012 at 8:58 pm

but Doc can’t blame this one on lack of offense!

I’m definitely liking this pattern … start out with a lead, get in trouble, and then roar back to win it! (OK, so the game’s not over yet, …)

  27. Tracey

    WOW!!! What a catch!

I was shocked to find the Philllies down 8-6 after a 6-0 with Halladay really looking sharp out there. But the real good thing is maybe some of the Phillies are starting to find their stuff. Good 1-2-3 inning from Antonio Bastardo. Maybe Charlies should keep him in for 2 innings tonight. Great hitting by Carlos Ruiz and Laynce Nix tonight.

  30. Tracey

    May 2, 2012 at 9:52 pm

Turn-about’s fair play. How about a Chooch GS?

  31. Tracey

    May 2, 2012 at 9:52 pm

    Or a 3-run double. I’ll settle for that. 🙂

  32. brooks

    May 2, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Wow, career night for Chooch! This is out of sight! We cannot expect this every night but if everyone takes a turn – this is great!

cholly Manuel totally mis manages the bullpen going up 12-8 in the 8th innings brings in contereas who gives up 2 walks 2 singles 12-9… so cholly piulls him … brings in schwimmer who walks Bourne …12-10 then a single to make it 12-10 … thank you cholly the idiot manuel

  45. Jeff of Nova

    May 2, 2012 at 10:23 pm

    Hey all,

Just turned the game and was like WTF. We score 12 and are losing cause Contreras who has not pitched a good inning yet and Schwimmer is not a major league pitcher had to pitch tonight

  46. BobS

    May 2, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Contreras and Schwimmer are more like the back end of a donkey than the back end of the bullpen. Schwimmer has taken over the mantel previously worn by Zagurski. i would rather take my chances with some of the Pigs and Reading arms

  47. Jeff of Nova

    May 2, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Manuel has mismanaged this bullpen for years what else is new, can we move on with him bring up Sandburg

  70. Tracey

    May 2, 2012 at 11:12 pm

Well, we didn’t win the game, but we put up a better fight than we’ve seen out of them so far this year. That’s a very encouraging development.

  71. Jeff

    May 2, 2012 at 11:13 pm

Bullpen stinks. Chilly has no idea how to manage.

  72. Jeff of Nova

    May 2, 2012 at 11:14 pm

Wow way to go Charlie great use of the bullpen once again.

    I love the Phillies,

but I am hating this team…. they are just weak in so many areas.

Can we send Sanches back to AAA and Contreras back to Cuba

  73. "Big Ed" Delahanty

    May 2, 2012 at 11:16 pm

@jeff: I agree. Cholly boggles my mind some times.

    May 2, 2012 at 11:18 pm

Some of you are wondering why there’s less chatter this year. It couldn’t have anything to do with listening to personal “back & forth” between clowns like Tracey & Brooks. We didn’t need to see or hear the game we got play by play from those two. Christ.

    • brooks

      May 3, 2012 at 2:37 am

This is where fans come to blog, clown

  75. Jeff of Nova

    May 2, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Back in the day no way we lose that game! This team has no backbone, no leadership, I know they are not out of things, but we just let our arch rival abuse our entire bullpen and made all the wrong calls with pitches and calls on what pitchers to use.

I know we have so many injuries, but if Manuel is the phenom manager everyone wants to say he is, then he makes the right call in games like this, he just has no idea what is the right thing to do, I am sick and tired of his country bumkin ignorant sounding conferences that make no sense to anyone!

Can we just let him ride off in the sunset tomorrow and bring in Sandburg or anyone else, Take Gross with him

grrrr I hate watcher the Braves get the best of us I mean HATE that crap

    • schmenkman

      May 3, 2012 at 7:20 am

      Hate. Got it.

  76. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2012 at 11:23 pm

charlie was great managing the best team in baseball.

When they arent that good neither is he.

Lots of issues here. But I am way over my limit.

give me 26 Carlos ruiza and Id win the WS every year

    Period

  77. Jeff of Nova

    May 2, 2012 at 11:29 pm

Very True, just want him out we need new life, I mean we tossed Milt for Gross and I think he sucks even worse

  78. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2012 at 11:31 pm

    Problem #1 is Ruben

But there is a punchers chance this year and probably that is accentuated with a different manager.

    Not a players manager.
A manager who sits Howard or Utley or anyone when sitting them best suits the team winning.

I also hate people who complain about what others post.
