Day Two Phillies Draft Review

With their first pick on day 2 of the 2012 MLB amateur draft, the Phillies selected outfielder Dylan Cozens with the 77th overall pick. The 6-foot-5-inch 230-pounder attended Scottsdale Chapparal High School in Arizona, where he posted a .520 batting average with a state-best 19 home runs and 52 RBI this season.

The youngster, who has a scholarship in place to play football at the University of Arizona next year, is expected to sign with the Phillies. Cozens was a defensive end in high school and also had football scholarship offers from Boise State and Washington.

The Phillies also chose right-hander Alec Rash with the 95th overall pick. Rash, from Adel Desoto Minburn High School (Iowa), stands 6-feet-5-inches tall and weighs 195 pounds.  His fastball reaches 95 MPH and he is armed with some solid secondary pitches. Rash is a Missouri recruit.

In round 3, the Phils selected high school shortstop Zach Green. The Jesuit High (Carmichael, CA) product batted .417 this season. The heavily scouted Green is committed to play baseball at Oregon State and stands 6-foot-3-inches, weighing about 190 pounds.

In the 4th round (158th overall), the Phillies took first baseman Chris Serritella, a junior out of Southern Illinois University. Seritella batted .389 with 13 HR and 61 RBI in 58 games with SIU this past season. Previously drafted by Kansas City in 2011 (31st rd), the 6-foot-3-inch 210-pounder chose not to sign.

Andrew Pullin, the Phillies’ 5th round pick (188th overall), is an extremely speedy outfielder from Centralia High School in Washington state. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, Pullin is a lefty hitter that was also a switch-pitcher in high school.

The Phillies chose third baseman Cameron Perkins in the 6th round (218th overall).  A junior out of Purdue, the right-handed hitting Perkins led the Boilermakers in HR and RBI in each of the past two seasons. The 6-foot-5-inch 200-pounder was previously drafted by the Mariners in the 43rd round in 2009 out of high school.

In the 7th round (248th overall), the Phils took lefty hurler Hoby Milner out of Texas.  The 6-foot-2-inch 165-pounder went 7-4 with a 2.64 ERA with 3 saves and 68 strike outs in 71 2/3 innings as a junior this year.  Milner’s fastball velocity typically resides in the low-90’s.

The Phillies’ 8th round selection (278th overall) was catcher Josh Ludy out of Baylor.  The 5-foot-10-inch 210-pounder was named the Big 12 Player of the Year.  Entering the Waco Super Regional, Ludy leads the Big 12 with 15 HR
and 69 RBI.  Additionally, the righty hitting senior’s .368 batting average is among the league leaders.

Jordon Guth, a right-handed pitcher was taken in the 9th round (308th overall).  A 6-foot-5-inch 215-pound junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Guth sports a fastball that reaches the mid-90’s.

Also selected by the Phillies was righty hurler Kevin Brady, who was the club’s 10th round choice (338th overall).  The Clemson junior stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds.  Brady sported a 2.54 ERA with 62 strike outs in 63 2/3 innings this season.  His repertoire includes a fastball (90-94 MPH), a slider and a change up.
The remainder of the Phillies’ draft selections on Tuesday included the following…

11th round- William Carmona, 3rd baseman, Stony Brook University

12th round- Zachary Taylor, OF, Armstrong Atlantic State University.

13th round- Steven Golden, OF, St. Francis High School (Mountain View, CA)

14th round- Richard Bielski, RHP, Servite High School (Anaheim, CA)

15th round- Zach Cooper, RHP, Central Michigan University
