Philadelphia Phillies (29-32)
vs. Minnesota Twins (24-35)

#VOTECHOOCH has boosted Carlos Ruiz to 3rd overall in the National League for catchers behind Yadier Molina and Buster Posey. Keep on voting!

Now, to actual baseball, which hasn’t been pretty for either team taking the field tonight. There are only two teams with a worse home record than the Phillies, and the Twins are one of them. Minnesota is 11-18 at Target Field, while the Phillies actually surprisingly excel away from the Bank, posting a 17-14 record so far this year.

The bad news for the Phillies is that they’ve slipped to 8.5 game back in the division by the Washinton Nationals. The somewhat-OK news is that there are two wild card teams this season and the Phillies find themselves just 5.5 out of that. For as bad as things have gone this season, I think that’s quite surprising.

Chase Utley is batting third for the Clearwater Threshers tonight, the first game of his actual rehab assignment. No more extended spring games and all that garbage. The clock has begun to tick. However, at least for tonight, he will DH. Look for him to play the field soon.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Pierre LF, Pence RF, Thome DH, Victorino CF, Wigginton 1B, Ruiz C, Fontenot 3B, Martinez 2B

No beer on the menu tonight. After just returning from a trip to Mexico, it was often too hot to drink cerveza and have it stay cold for longer than five minutes. Enter the Rum Runner. It’s loaded with bacardi and mixed with a fruit smoothie concoction. Here’s to a good, old-fashioned mixed beverage. -By Pat

    8.5 games.

And a guy with an 8 ERA

    Not looking too good.

The way they have handled Brown is absolutely disgraceful. He should have started every game in left last year. It wouldnt have mattered. And maybe they would have won in the playoffs if he was starting. But that will never be known.

You take a top 3 prospect in the sport and ruin him.

Of all the things Ruben Minaya Jr. has done to screw up the team. And the list is about a mile long. This is IMO the worst thing he has done.
Why he isnt playing now is beyond me?

Hes managed to take the 2nd highest payroll in the sport and have all old guys and be 8.5 games out on june 12th.
At least if it was all young guys youd be in last but might have a future to look forward to. Instead you got 3 more years of Jimmy pop up hitting first.

If he is still the GM on June 12 2013 I will be shocked.

    Re :Brown

If you werent going to play him Rube

Trade him when his value was high.

Just like you shuold have traded Utley and or Rollins after the 2010 season.

But this guy has no concept of selling high. Only knows hoard them to they are valueless.
    He is great at that.

Well, we can use more of this Jimmy “pop up” – nice.
Finally breaking the RISP 0 fer.

    Hi brooks

Yea lets see if there are signs of life here.

    KK stinks anymore.
Span going bomb was not good.

    Bets are on Andrew –
    I’d like to see a 1-2-3 , if possible

    June 12, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Did I say bets are on? Can I choose a side now?
Cholly is not giving the Phils a chance by leaving KK in

    I’d like to see a 1-2-3 , if possible

the very disappointing thing about not playing Brown is you could still have Singleton or D’Arnaud/Taylor still in the system. He was valued that high.

I guess no one is going to work with Pence or talk to him about fielding on a high school level.

It might hurt his feelings. And we couldnt have that.
I do not count Hunter as one of the prima donnas

    But this is a joke.

He is worse than Lonnie Smith this year in the out field.

At what point may there be some changes? 10 games out before june 15th?
20 at the all star break?

    • psujoe

      June 12, 2012 at 10:12 pm

20 back at all star break and you go all in for a top 3 pick in the draft. You then bring up Brown and trade anyone not coming back for whatever you can get.

Savery to the rescue – noops! 2 thirds inning, 3 hits 2 runs already?

Kendricked in the first four innings. Now we are getting the Joe Savery treatment. When is Stutes coming back? I agree with Andrew. Hunter Pebce makes little leaguers look like gold glove winners. Im utterly f@(king disgusted. Turning off the tv.

Turn the TV back on. Ed

They are showing signs of life on offense.

The Twinkies are last in thier division and came in with a guy with an 8 ERA after all.

Nats already won so a loss puts you at 9.5

    Kendrick to savery

I am holding out hopes for Jose Mesa next.

Have a drink Brooks may be a long evening.

Been watching the whole time. As frustrated as u get and even when I say I’m not going to watch anymore, I still do. I always have hope, but I agree with Dipsy, this season has been like the Bataan death march.

I like when guys who come into the game with 1 homer hit one about 600 feet.

At least none of these bombs by the twins have been cheap.

Just dont fall into Niagra Falls.

    Savory Rosenberg Diekman.

What the hell good does a closer do when these are the rest of your pen and your 10 games out on June 12th??????

    Thanks again Rube

Keep the faith. It’s OK to have one bad year in the middle of 8 or 9 good ones. The trick will be when the Phils fall out of it maximizing return value for who they dump. The BP will be fine next year if they get one more seasoned arm. You’re not going to win with 70+ million out of the lineup.

        June 12, 2012 at 11:16 pm

“When the Phils fall out of it”??????? You mean their still in it???? Really.

Blackburns 4 earned in 5 IP lowered his ERA from 7.75 to 7.68

He is in line for the win though.

    I am proud of you.

70 million out leaves you with a 105 million dollar pay roll.

Teams have won world series with less.

You really think next year these old players will be better?
Halladay and Lee will be better?
Utley and Howard will be like 2007?

Howard and Utley have been in heavy decline before these injuries. Much more likely they are done. Over a 50% chance both are basicly done.

Sorry but I have to look at things honestly. The future for this team is terrible. Its the Mets 3 or 4 years ago with Delgado and Beltran and Reyes and then bringing in K Rod.
It takes a long time to overcome this many bad moves by a GM.

I think the phils have 0% chance in 2013 and 2014. At least this year there was a punchers chance if Hlladay and Lee and Hamels were all still dominant.
Next year there is no Hamels and Lee and Halladay are again older.

This aint one bad aberation of a season.
    Sorry wish it was.

Ruben worked for this. With the hand he was dealt if he was even a little competant we wouldnt be in this situation. But he is incompetant.

Remove any teams 3 and 4 hitter, their #1 starter, 3b man, 4 relief pitchers and their backup to the 3 hitter and that team would suck. If you remove 41% of any teams payroll(stipulation must be 3/4 hitter and best pitcher) they would suck mych worse than the Phillies. How would the Dodgers do if kemp and Athier were out for the year and Hairston played half the time while removing Kershaw and 4 relief pitchers? How would the Rangers be doing without Hamilton, Beltre and Kinsler as well as their best pitcher and 4 relief pitchers? the team is decimated. Sell what’s not soming back and regroup.

      June 12, 2012 at 11:51 pm

You do realize the Phils won over 100 games last year, right? The team this year is better than last year except for the injuries, much better. The biggest problem last year is the bench was so friggin bad that Charlie ran his starters into the ground when he didn’t have too.

And Victorino – who needs him any more. Swings at every 1st or 2nd pitch, pops it up, buzz kill and rally kill Bullpen is a disaster, can’t even keep us in the games where we might have a choice. Only question is how bad is this season going to be, and how far back do we end up. I watch to the last pitch every night, but its getting tougher to do each day 😉

The Nats have lost Werth Zimmerman and Morse for long stretches.

The difference between them and Utley and Howard is they are still good is all.

Its no excuse and again next year these players all of them will be older and Hamels will be gone.

I am glad you are optimistic and would love for you to be right.
