All over the Delaware Valley today, female Phillies fans find themselves feeling more randy than usual. No, Ryan Gosling isn’t in town filming the movie adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. The reason for the uptick in amorous vibes from the female fan base is a different kind of aphrodisiac: Chase Utley in a Phillies uniform.

It’s been 279 dark and dreary days since Utley last played meaningful baseball. Tonight, like a knight in shining armor ready to pull the Phillies organization and its fans from the depths of despair to the tune of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir,” he makes his return. While the mere presence of Utley won’t do much in terms of helping the team turn its season around, he certainly provides hope–something this team has desperately been in search of for quite some time now. He provides a patient hitter who can work a count and hit the ball out of the ballpark.

At his best, he’s a game changer. At his worst, he’s better than any other option the Phils have at second base. It’ll be fascinating to see the reception he receives tonight and the start he gets off to.

On the defensive side of things, the Phillies are without a traditional starting pitcher. That means one thing: Bullpen game. Is there any phrase more frightening to Phillies fans after watching this ‘pen over the last three months? Probably not. Raul Valdes will be the first man out of the bullpen door, and is expected to go three or four innings. From there, it will be a mix and match job by Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee. With the bats likely needing to mash their way to a victory, Utley couldn’t have picked a better time to make his triumphant return.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Pierre LF, Utley 2B, Ruiz C, Pence RF, Victorino CF, Wigginton 1B, Fontenot 2B, Valdes P

Whirlwind WitbierYour Gameday Beer– Shiner Ruby Redbird

Summer is in full-swing, and I’m going to keep the summer seasonal recommendations coming. I’ve recently discovered the Shiner Ruby Redbird, and found it quite tasty. The dominant flavors in this brew are ginger and citrus, which comes from the fact that it’s brewed with Ruby Red grapefruit juice (though it combines with the ginger for more of an orange citrus taste). Like most summer seasonals, it’s remarkably light. I’m not sure what type of beer Chase Utley drinks, but I think he’d approve of this one.  – By RD

Why couldn’t we brought up someone from AAA like Cloyd or Erlaton? I went from bliss to pissed in one inning!

      June 27, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Unfortunately both pitched in the last two days, they weren’t available. And they didn’t trust anyone else.

I agree Big Ed- why not call up a AAA starter? Cloyd started at AA, then was called up to AAA and (total) is 7-1!! And named an all-star- give him a shot tonight.

He could’ve easily have given up that 3r hr

heel pads are created to cushion the entire heel, from the part which tends to make impact with all the ground towards the edges and back from the heel.

I have no idea Raul Valdes or Joe Savery are even in there, I would have reather had a pitcher from Lakewood out there.

This is so sad cause it started with a great back to back HRs and we have now lost all momentum.

Way to waste the utley emotion. I would have sat him down tonight since we have no pitching.

Who is the one that is making these ignorant decisions to have this group of idiot relievers run it tonight. Their bullpen has been pretty horrible, they needed to have done a better job in figuring this out, I mean they knew this was coming since they had a day night double header on SUn. should have sat some in LHV or Reading.

Agreed, It’s poor management. I don’t mind them doing this when they have Kendrick in the pen. Now he’s going to start tomorrow, and if he’s not on, there won’t be much of a pen to back him up.

@Jeff of Nova, Lefty: I agree. Poor management. We could have made up a game in the east tonight.

That is why Charlie needs to learn how to play small ball. We need a manager who will not be afraid to tell people to lay down a bunt. Actually manage, dont just watch your players go out there and kill a rally.

God this pen is the worst in baseball just cut chad

    • Stuart

      June 27, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Yeah I honestly do not know who Amaro has not done anything to try and fix it. He just leaves the same guys in the pen. Call up new pitchers, make a trade, do anything but the guys in the pen now are obviously not getting the job done.

Im taking Qualls out to an island and leaving him there. Once again the bullpen implodes, kills a legitimate rally of old, and Case’s 3 for 4 review. Someone remind me what Rube saw in Qualls?

  30. phills_nills

    June 27, 2012 at 10:10 pm

i don’t think this bullpen qualifies for double A right now and that is being very kind 11 runs this bullpen has given up tonight and nothing against the pirates but this isn’t a team that blow you out of the water with runs

  31. Jeff of Nova

    June 27, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Paps is the only workable piece in the pen and he is starting to dumb down to the rest of the pen

  32. Dave

    June 27, 2012 at 10:14 pm

Seriously. I mean, how many more games do we have to put up with this *hit? Just keep sitting there Amaro – watching our season go down the drain.

    June 27, 2012 at 10:31 pm

I guess for this brilliant bullpen plan, they didn’t consider that now they have to bank on KK throwing a CG tomorrow. Would you bet your house on that? Flippin’ geniuses running this team.

Sorry folks I’m not usually this critical, but I’m calling it as I see it right now. They couldn’t pluck one guy from their entire system once they agreed to play a doubleheader Sunday?

All right bottom of the ninth down 4, the rally cap is on.

My buddy hit me with some tickets, last minute. We got there just as Jimmy walked in teh first inning, saw Pierre hit into a force then get picked off. It was as I imagined it would be. The place was nuts to see Chase back at the bat and it could not have been scripted any better. Majestic solo shot into deep right center field.

We did not see Chase have much pressure put on him defensively, we would have liked to have seen him in those situations but it was great to see what he did.

Aside from the Phillies BP barfing, this was a great game to be at. Especially with the 2 runs scored in the bottom of the 6th and 3 more in the bottom of the 7th. The Phils made soem things mappenind in the 9th
