Gameday: Phillies (37-48) vs. Braves (44-39) – Phillies Nation
2012 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (37-48) vs. Braves (44-39)

Philadelphia Phillies (37-48) vs. Atlanta Braves (44-39)

Joe Blanton (7-7, 4.85) vs. Tommy Hanson (9-5, 3.70)

Time: 7:15 PM, Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 101
Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Phillies suffered another tough loss on Friday night.  Tonight’s another scorcher, but hopefully it will be a different outcome for the Phillies.

In his starts, Joe Blanton has been either really good, or really bad. It’s hard to predict what Blanton will do for the Phillies, but if it is any indicator, Blanton tossed a complete game shutout in his only start against the Braves this season.

Tommy Hanson has had success against the Phillies throughout his career: posting a 2.93 ERA. At Citizens Bank Park, he’s been even better, posting a 1.20 ERA in 15 innings.

Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Ruiz, Pence, Polanco, Pierre, Mayberry, Blanton

Your gameday beer: Harp Lager

I was never crazy about the new label redesign–I preferred the old blue-and-cream label to the new electric green. This one recalls nothing so much as Bud Light Lime. However, I’ve always been crazy about the taste of this lager, which is lighter and than Yuengling without giving up anything in terms of taste, hoppiness, or machismo. –by Michael B.

The game is in a rain delay. You know what they say: you have to play to win! But you also have to play to lose…

Down here at the game now watching the lightning show.

The thunderstorm should cool things down a bit, which will certainly be welcome!

And I hear it will be over soon. It passed through my area quickly.

Excited to see what new, interesting and heartbreaking way they manage to blow this one, you guys!

As it turns out, this is just going to be a garden variety loss.

Although the Bourn steal of home was pretty slick, so there’s that.

  5. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Hehehe. Yeah, Eric, I think it’s more exciting when the wins are a surprise, don’t you?

And Blanton is off and running! A 1-2-3 first!

Whew! That looked like it was going out!

  7. Tracey

Ugh. And that one did go out. Way, WAY out.

Yay, but WTF is up with Juan Samuel?

  15. Chuck A.

Samuel needed to be decked like that. He’s pissed too.

  16. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 8:47 pm

    Woo hoo!!!

But did I hear that right? Did that idiot announcer call it a grand slam before it was out of the infield?

  17. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 8:47 pm

@Chuck: Yeah, not really Hunter’s fault. What was Samuel doing halfway down the path so close to the baseline?

  18. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Ooo… this is exciting! Actual offense from the Phils!

    July 7, 2012 at 9:16 pm

Blanton has to be the worst pitcher in history of the game.

Pence is the worst defensive fielder. He is so bad he makes Dipsy
    Look good

  23. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 9:17 pm

(sigh) And they fall behind. Do you think the Phils will be able to rustle up any more offense, or did they use it all up in the 2nd?

  26. psujoe

    July 7, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Reds looking hard at Pierre. They have a couple of quality SS prospects in the 22-23 year old range I’d take. You can definately get a good prospect for a .320 leadoff hitter who is 20-23 in steals with a low salary even if he only is a rental. He’ll bring a better return than Thome which was pretty good. Let Mayberry go full time in LF and let him sink or swim.

  27. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 9:49 pm

You’re ready to have a fire sale, Joe? Pierre is one of the few things worth watching on this team this year

    • psujoe

      July 7, 2012 at 10:25 pm

I don’t want a total firesale, but I want RAJ to reposition the team for 2013. I’m one that still believes in this teams core. IMO, it’s just not their year. The BP is decimated and no way you buy this far out behind this many teams. It’s just an imperfect storm IMO. Here’s what I’d do if I were RAJ.

      1. Resign Hamels.
      2. Get value for every player on the last year of their deal. Reds like Pierre and what’s not to like. RAJ can get a good piece or pieces. Heck, I love the Thome deal.
      3. Find out what young players have it. Play Mayberry full time, Get Galvis back and get him in there. Hope Brown comes back healthy…
      4. Phils have the 6th pick at this point in what is suppossed to be a good draft?
      5. Lot of $$$ coming off the books to help the roster.

      • EricL

        July 7, 2012 at 10:47 pm

#1. TRADE HUNTER PENCE FOR A YOUNG, GOOD, 3B prospect (Olt from Texas, Headley from San Diego or Castellanos from Detroit are three examples)

#2.a Have a Pina Colada now that Pence is no longer on the team

        #2.b – Re-sign Cole Hamels.

#3. Sign Michael Bourn in the offseason to replace Victorino/Pence. If you can get Victorino back at a relatively competitive price, I wouldn’t even be opposed to that — he’s said he’s willing to take a Philadelphia discount (although not sure if he still would after being traded).

#4. Look for next year’s Joe Nathan. Ryan Madson, perhaps.

  28. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 9:51 pm

That was a nice, clean inning, but Blanton is near 100 pitches.

We need some offense. Now, if not sooner.

    July 7, 2012 at 9:53 pm

It is unreal that the nats keep winning. No way they can keep that pace up

  30. therookie300

    July 7, 2012 at 9:53 pm

They better find a way to win this game. I want a reason to sit here in this swampy weather.

  31. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 9:58 pm

OK: Blanton pitched well in the 6th. I’d leave him in, even though his pitch count is high, but I’d pull him the second he shows a sign of weakness (first baserunner).

  32. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 9:59 pm

@therookie300: I don’t know how you manage it. It must be beastly hot out there and icky wet.

I’d have Blanton out by now, but Charlie will have him finish the inning, for better or worse.

  35. Tracey

make that worse. Bleh. But it looks like Charlie’s going to pull him finally.

    July 7, 2012 at 10:49 pm

The only thing that’s keeping me from being disgusted with the Bourn for Lidge trade is “48 for 48.” Christ, this guy knows how to get on freaking base.

    • psujoe

      July 7, 2012 at 11:14 pm

Lidge was worth it. Rings are hard to come by as we know. I’d sacrafice a solid young ball player to the Gods every 10 years for a title, LOL.

  44. Tracey

    July 7, 2012 at 10:51 pm

And he knows how to steal them too. That was a bad call. Not that it’s going to make any difference. Phils are going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th.

No life at all. The minimum number of batters in 8 out of 9 innings.

8 out of the 9 innings the Philistless had 3 batters to the plate. Including the double plays in the 7th and 8th innings.
