Gameday: Phillies (40-51) at Dodgers (48-43) – Phillies Nation
2012 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (40-51) at Dodgers (48-43)

Philadelphia Phillies (40-51) at Los Angeles Dodgers (48-43)

Roy Halladay (4-5, 3.98) vs. Stephen Fife, RHP

Time: 10:10 PM ET, Dodger Stadium
TV:
CSN
Weather: Sunny, 72
Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Phillies put together a three game winning streak!  Can they make it four in a row?  The return of Roy Halladay gives the Phillies a decent chance.

Doc is back!  Halladay will be making his first appearance since May 27, when he suffered from a right lat strain.  Halladay will be under a tight pitch count, but it’s always nice to have the ace back in the rotation, even if he only lasts five or six innings.  Halladay has had success at Dodger Stadium, posting a 2.15 ERA.

The return of Halladay comes at a perfect time: the Phillies are riding a three game winning streak.  Halladay’s return certainly gives the Phillies a boost, and hopefully they can carry the momentum.  They need all the help they can get if they want to turn the season around.

Stephen Fife will be making his Major League debut.  In 18 starts in Triple-A this year, Fife is 7-5 with a 4.53 ERA.

Your gameday beer: Any beer that calls itself “Entire Butt” is good in my book. But Entire Butt Porter might be the greatest beer ever created. Full of taste, it goes down like water that was magically sprayed by the gods. So godly water, really. That’s the general focus of the discussion. What do you eat with this? Something with mild spice. Something that makes you want to run to the beer and enjoy every last sip. Something … well, something warm, is the gist of the explanation I’m making. Go with beef and peppers. –By Tim

I guess that’s called respect. Doc’s pitching, so Charlie has Vic bunt after Jimmy’s double, playing for 1. I’d have rather seen Vic hit, and try to get the roung righty on the ropes early, but it’s a nice start. here we go, Doctor, here we go!

Ken, this is how the Phils need to play, one run at a time. Small Ball all the way. Hit, move the runner over and score. 1 hit, 1 run.
I love it. Now if Doc can hold them

    • Ken Bland

      July 17, 2012 at 10:28 pm

I just liked the idea of trying to put the kid on the ropes. It wasn’t a bad move, just preferred letting him hit away.

    Doc, 1st inning….

17 pitches, 10 strikes, nice mix of cuts, splits, number 1’s and a couple curves. Got one out at 92 mph. Looked a little rusty for 3 pitches, but the Doc is the Doc. 2K’s, and a 3-2 well hit fly to left by Kemp.

Looked like he caught a break on strike out pitch to Abrieu, but that’s what baseball is all about…the umps making sure the Phils get close calls.

Now, the object is what does he do after sitting, for an encore. You never know, but we’re talking Doc.

Well, this is disappointing with the 4 straight hits. Even after the 1st couple hits, I thought the matchups presented a decent chance to wiggle through. Velocity is certainly not a problem. He’s probably a little ahead of schedule on that.

Everytime a Phillie walks the leadoff hitter, I die 1,000 deaths. Gawd, I hate that. So now that RyHo walked, on 4 no less, THEY BETTER DO WHAT OPPONENTS SEEM TO! Esp[ecially since a little mopre offensive support thrown Doc’s way would be nice.

Course, the Dodgers are dying to get into the Phillies pen, even though they are doing okay against Doc. Conversely, the Phils would probably love to keep making contact off Fife, and find holes. But he’s settled in pretty nicely to this point.

  13. Ken Bland

    July 17, 2012 at 11:14 pm

Doc owns Ethier. I mean, you’re only as good as your last at bat.

Ethier and Chipper will probably roll over with laughter when Doc gets in the Hall.

They are both hitting over 1.000 each against him. They’re both good, but that’s amazing.

  14. Ken Bland

    July 17, 2012 at 11:17 pm

    Very tough call coming up.

    Pinch hit for Doc?

    63 pitches.

I might be inclined to make the move. One more inning wouldn’t be the end of the world, but he seems to have worked hard tonight.

    Wonder what others think.

  15. Ken Bland

    July 17, 2012 at 11:22 pm

I guess Doc’s glare if you think of taking him out is in mid season form.

One more inning shouldn’t be too bad.

    A freaking run would help.

    • Ken Bland

      July 17, 2012 at 11:41 pm

I don’t know if Pete could do that with this group. he had a fired up Larry Bowa to help orchestrate the fireupedness that seems to be missing this year.

But it’d be fun to activate Pete, and give it a shot. But don’t tell Uncle Selig I said that.

  18. Ken Bland

    July 17, 2012 at 11:39 pm

Well, that was funner. I’d say Doc’s night, for its purpose, getting back to form was a real good start. A little rusty, a little off on command at times, but overall, pretty good, and conditioning wise, the 79 pitches should continue a nice foundation that we’ll see how he is compared to his curtailed first half, which may have been injury effected the whole way through.

Looking at the game through rose colored glasses, if the Phils are to have a nice second half, however nice it might be, one thing we’d like to see is some ability to come from behind to win games. They’re in it, and they can win it. It’d be a nice story to finally score a late game comeback in Doc’s first game back. The 0-8 w/ RISP tonight is valid, but early game news.

Should he have made another rehab start? personally, I think this way worked out pretty well, and look forward to him having a nice between starts routine, and coming back and building strength next time out.

The caption will read “Save your money. Watch this staue for free, and you’ll see the same thing here for freeas you would inside.

This is kinda like the last playoff game V the cards last year now. There was no excuse not to manufacture 1 single run then, and now, relatively healthy, and top of the lineup to kick off the 8th, the Phils simply have to score at least 1 stinking run.

It hasn’t been done this late.

KK looking sweet out of the pen and guess what, the old man pulling all the strings – It doesn’t matter 2 hit batters and a walk, it doesn’t matter, he does not hit for them either – he juked and jived, twisted and turned and the Phils pulled it out – nice Job Cholly

They have their whole lineup back. No excuses now. It’s not like earlier in the season when you had a few AAA players in the lineup. Great win tonight. Nice job by KK.

NIce win. Nice couple of wins lately. But I still don’t think they make the playoffs. Too many teams to leapfrog over. But what the hell…. it’s nice to just enjoy good baseball for a change.

Hopefully cole realizes the team isn’t far away and will be back next year. Hopefully he also sees the Dodgers suck, LOL.

I certainly don’t disagree with you Chuck. But this was true grit Phillies baseball like we’ve been seeing since 2003. Who cares that the Dodgers virtually gifted that 8th inning to us with a walk and 2 hit batters – and that Pence hit the ball off his ankles (unreal) that somehow squirted through the middle – it was a come from behind win!

Sit back for a second, Utley, Howard, Vic and Ruiz -and Pitiful Poly – I’ll say it, the “heart” of our lineup went 1 for 11 and the team only had 5 hits in all. The likes of Schwimmer, Horst (!?), Kendrick, Bastardo and Paps came in and shut the Dodgers down in the last 4 innings. It was gutsy, it was good watch, it was Doc doing his best Doc imitation and they won.

Chuck, I’ll take good baseball for the remainder of the season, not this horsebleep we have been swallowing for the past month and a half and I will be satisfied enough to purchase another round of tickets for next year – playoffs or not (but if they play like this, they will be in the post season – just sayin’)

On MLB I just watched the replay of Pence’s single. He swung at ball 3, that ball was at his ankles. Amazing dribbler right up the middle.

In that at bat, the Dodgers didn’t even throw a pitch that was a strike.

It doen’t matter how we won…off the ankle or not….the fact that we are thinking win is great!!
The team mindset has changed and you can see them slowly coming around and taking advantage of all the bad pitchers who walk, hit and otherwise give them a free passage to a base. We brought 2 of them in to win the game!!! Isn’t it better than the malaise we’ve been watching. And as I said on another post…..all the other teams who have been winning by our bad pitching, no hitting, and having all of our key players on the DL got alot of breaks at our expense. I am glad we finally took advantage of a gift that wasgiven to us due to their bad pitching!!! Go Phillies!!!
