2012 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (46-57) at Nationals (61-41)

Philadelphia Phillies (46-57) at Washington Nationals (61-41)

Vance Worley (5-6, 3.88 ERA) vs Edwin Jackson (6-6, 3.52 ERA)

Time: 7:05, Nationals Park
Weather: Sunny, 90, Scattered T-storms
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Well we might not see if ‘trying any damn thing’ will actually work any time soon but the new look Phillies gave us something to cheer for last night.  Enter Domonic Brown.  Brown will be making his long awaited return to the starting lineup tonight playing left field  a day after the Phillies sent Hunter Pence to the San Francisco Giants.

One of the pieces that the Giants sent over was Nate Schierholtz, who will be playing right field and batting second.  John Mayberry Jr. will be running wild in center to round out the rest of the outfield and hitting after Ryan Howard in the lineup.

This may not be the Phillies team we remember, but this is our Phillies team.  For the moment at least.  Some may think the white flag has been raised, and maybe yes it has for this season, but this team is not a bottom dweller.  It’s not their style.  Expect this team to continue to play hard and build some momentum through the end of the season.

Vance Worley will be on the hill tonight.  Worley has been knocked around a bit recently with opponents hitting .353 against him in his last five starts.  He will try and correct the ship against Edwin Jackson and the rest of the Nationals tonight.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Schierholtz RF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Mayberry CF, Brown LF, Frandsen 3B, Kratz C, Worley P.

Your gameday beer: Yeah man. Here’s Dogfish 90 Minute IPA. The 90 Minute is a sterling beer, flavorful and not overly strong in taste. But it hits you, and it hits you hard. It’s 9 percent, so it gets you good after a few. Drink with caution. And eat some mussels with it. – By Tim

That’s a lot of lefties… hopefully we’ll get to Jackson early and W another one! Go Dom Brown!

definately lefty heavy which is why I like the backup cacther and 1b to be righties. I really hope Kratz stays on as the backup.

Off topic, a little trivia: Chooch’s double last night was the 600th hit of his career. Rollins is only 56 days older than Chooch, but he got his 600th hit over 8 years ago, in June of 2004.

Well, Ruiz didn’t get his first big league PA until he was 27. Rollins’ first career PA was at age 21.

Phils brought up Mini-Mart. Amazing the number of chances that guy gets. Holy!

    A curious order, I’d say.

John Mayberry, hardly an afficiando of batting right against a righty bats 5th.

We’ll see how that works out.

I’d at a minimum flip DB and him.

Vance looks like he needs a little more time to get ready to pitch tonight

Yea they cut Fontenot and Maritnez gets another chance. I think someone in the Phillies organization saw something in Martinez and probably dont want to let him go without giving him his shots. I would think that this would be his last shot to prove anything.

He’s not getting another chance. he’s a stopgap fill in because of no depth in centerfield, and they are of the opinion he can play CF adequately..

Just because a guy is called up doesn’t mean he’s getting another chance.

He was given chances before, but the way he hit his last time up, it’s a wonder he’s still with the organization.

Looks like Jackson for the no hitter tonight?

Ryan Howard has struck out 26 times in 19 games. Extrapolate that to 162 games you have 221 strike outs.

I was curious and looked back to last year. He had 29 in 19 games in late Apr/early May, and 32 in 19 in August.

Just started watching. Did I miss anything good?

Yeah, but you’ll think I’m making this up. Rollins hit a 2nd deck homer. He knew it was gone before he left the box.

Does anybody care to watch how Down Town does with men in scoring position? Time to put this to rest one way or another. The only way to find out if D Brown is ML ready is to see how he produces with men on base.

      August 1, 2012 at 8:29 pm

Well, how would you rate that at bat? It shows as an oh fer with a RISP, but he did move Mayberry over with fewer than 2 outs, so it’s not like he completely failed, right?

They really need to give Dom more time to get the hang of it. Nobody is perfect their first week in the ML. They haven’t given him a proper chance because they were in a pennant race. not an issue this year.

Just a tad more about Ryan Howard, we know he’ll break out of this funk sometime but in the last 6 games (including tonight) 21 ab, 0 runs, 3 hits, 0 rbi, 0 extra base, 2 walks and 13 strike outs.
Cole Hamels, no Vance Worley is doing better than him at the plate.

That’s the 2nd time in recent days where you brought up his recent numbers.

But if you really want to do a community service, break it down by lefties and righties to satusfy one reader who isn’t ambitious enough to do it himself.

I’m really just curious if it breaks down that the numbers are sort of what would be expected.

I for one am not that ambitious! Ken
Howard is just in a real funk. At this point I don’t think it matters who he faces – he’s not tuned in.

    Worley’s career stats:

1st time through the order: .237 avg, .668 OPS against him
2nd time through the order: .237 avg, .660 OPS
3rd time through the order: .292 avg, .831 OPS

He’s never impressed me as being well conditioned, even aside of I think it was last year early when there was some discussion of it.

A lot of things could enter into the 3rd time through improvement, and he might be better conditioned than I think, but he just looks like he could lose 10-15 lbs even though he’s big boned.

We need a couple of runs for insurance here. VW got the job done tonight, and we didn’t give him much run support. With our pen, I worry with a 1 run lead.
