2012 Gameday

Gameday: Reds (74-49) at Phillies (57-65)

Cincinnati Reds (74-49) at Philadelphia Phillies (57-65)

Homer Bailey (10-8, 4.16) vs. Cliff Lee (2-7, 3.83)

Time: 7:05 p.m. Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 82
Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Phillies are moving up the standings!  They’re currently tied for third place.  A win and a Mets loss could put them in sole possession of third place. Disappointing, depressing, but it’s better than last.

Homer Bailey had a terrific month of July, but has struggled so far in August.  A reason for his recent struggles could be due to his innings pitched.  Bailey has never pitched this many innings in one season, as he is at a career-high in innings pitched.  If Bailey is tired out, the Phillies need to take advantage.

Cliff Lee needs to keep the ball in the yard and avoid the bad inning.  Lee has surrendered 22 home runs in 21 starts this season.  Lee tends to have that one bad inning where he gives up multiple runs.

Your Gameday Beer: Kalik. This is the King of Beers in the Bahamas. The brew was designed by Heineken for the Commonwealth Brewery based on the tastes of the islanders. As you can imagine, it has all the qualities of an ice-cold Bud or Corona – fizzy, yellow, and way too easy to drink on a hot summer day. Fortunately you can find the beer in America and even at some supermarkets. Make some fancy mac-n-cheese with ham or bacon in it. -By Brian

I agree that was one helluva play! If Polly made that, he’d be back on the 15 day DL. Lol. Loving this game so far! Go Phil’s!
@Tracy: Are they wearing those stupid “Ill” shirts?

    August 21, 2012 at 9:05 pm

No ill shirts, but the girls have phillies temporary tattoos on their faces and legs. No, they are not 12 years old.

Ill advised throgh to home to begin with.
    Howards error only compounded it.

    What Charlie 150 pitches tongiht?

Like to think that these aged pitchers will make it through to the end of thier contracts.
But management doesnt seem to care.

Mayberry threw to the cutoff which is what he’s supposed to do. Howard booted it, plain and simple.

Can’t blame Charlie for leaving Lee in . The Bull Pen stinks and needs the 4 arms back, plus.

Frandsen, the Man’dsen! Put Polly on waivers already. I guess they want to show Polly is healthy though to get a lower lever prospect.

Hey Andrew – I was just going to post that it might be at least 3 more games before we see Antonio puke again but, I guess I’m wrong. Why does Cholly keep using him?

    Ah…the bullpen.

Why isn’t the fuse about 2″ long? Take Antonio out not Charles

Cliff Lee has been hit hard late in several games. Against LA, he gave up 2 runs after pitching 7 shutout innings. Against Toronto, he gave up 3 runs after 7 innings of 2 run ball. Tonight, he gave up 3 runs after six innings of shoutout ball. The signs were definetly there that he was starting to falter. Charlie has to get a better sense of when to take him out. Of course with how Bastardo and the rest of the bullpen have performed, I understand Charlie’s reluctance to take him out.

Not sold on Fradsden(ye) too many AAAA players have good little stints. Then pitchers adjust etc. Only to revert back to there AAAA status. I wouldnt mind keeping him as a sub guy next year. Rube needs to get a 3B still.

some guys just hit period! did you see what he did with that heater on the outside part of the plate? good hitters decide in each AB what they’re gonna do and he took that low outside FB and shot a BB to the right side! excellant piece of hitting there! chooch was doing that all year! he knew when to turn on a pitch and when to go the other way. to me frandsen is a smart hitter he doesn’t try to do too much he stays within himself. if it turns out they can’t get a 3rd sacker i wouldn’t have a problem with him there. at poly’s age he’s slowing down defensively cause of all his physical problems. so in my eyes fransden might not be poly in his prime defensively but he just as good or better right now! and he’s giving us the offense that poly has been lacking all year. if they could get headley i’m ok with that.

    Frandsen and Kratz and glavisep

Are why you are able to let older players leave.
sometimes thier replacements step up and they are cheaper.

And all the bad plays in the outfield aside etc etc
    i like dom brown.

And kudos to Howard for leading off with a walk.
When he plays the game right.
    He is a great player.

Frandsen is on fire! I don’t care if the stats say he will bottom out, right now he has been great since being called up. I hope he stays hot. Go Phils. I love these games where we rally! Fires me up in a good way.

Frandsen was an excellent hitter in AAA so this is not a huge surprise. His glove has shocked me. Made a few poor plays, but man he is getting dirty and getting it done. The type of grit this team needs, IMO.

Another unbelievable play at third to nail Phillips! They better pick him up in the 9th!

Bacardi – even if his boost doesnt last long, its like the Coste factor. He did so well everyone fell in love with him but did it last? no

    @ Brooks

One thing is Charlie never learns.

I truly believe that if they are all still around and kicking in 2030
charlie will bat Rollins 1 and howard 4

And leave his starters in too long.

    Its all he knows.

why is paplebom in this game?

  23. Andrew from Waldorf

    August 21, 2012 at 10:13 pm

    Bastardo to paplebom

Yea the pen sucks but the fact that the manager cant remotely understand how to use a staff. Top to bottom doesnt help make the pen any better

      August 21, 2012 at 10:17 pm

Who cares how he’s used. He’s a waste of 12 million dollars is he can’t get outs in the ninth inning of a game he knows full well he’s going to pitch in.

  24. Brooks

    August 21, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Honestly I was just thinking how really stinking negative it would be of me to post “Time for a Paps Melt..” No kidding – took him on the first pitch

  25. Brooks

    August 21, 2012 at 10:18 pm

So how does this go? 3 more outs and 2 runs. Going extra innings cannot be an option. Who is it that cannot seem to hold onto the lead? Reds or Phils?

  26. Brooks

    August 21, 2012 at 10:22 pm

The bench has been terrible of late, just terrible

  27. Andrew from Waldorf

    August 21, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Use your closer in save situations.

Same way with Ledge and and every other closer.

Unless they havent pitched in a week and its a blow out put them in for work.

    Extra Innings?

And Ruben shoud sign Broxton long term.

I dont expect the phils to do much vs Chapman.

    Bunts LOLOL

    Absolutely disgraceful

    such a bad fundamental team.

    Primma Donald on first

the old man bunted his 50 million dollar lead off hitter.

    Vs chapman

That squeeze on wigginton sucked just as bad as the bunt. Stop basing Pap when Cliff gave the game up in the 7th. It’s a shame we didn’t see amount.

    • Ryne Duren

      August 21, 2012 at 11:49 pm

charlie said in his post game int. that it wasn’t a squeeze! he said when asked about it, that JP has the green light to bunt any time he wants! can you believe that? as a manager that’s the time with wiggy at 3rd you call JP down to talk to the coach and he gets informed not to bunt with wiggy at 3rd. now charlie said wiggy knew (on the fly the bunt was coming) hahaha! either you tell JPnot to bunt OR you tell him it’s a squeeze so wiggy gets a jump start! even then i wouldn’t have bunted! the infield was in , JP hits lefty’s ok let him hit! he shoots a flair it’s out of their reach we get at least a run. manual makes me sick! and having rollins bunting too! f**k. he screwed up two innings for us! not to mention the pen! SANDBERG SANDBERG!!!!!

        August 22, 2012 at 8:39 am

You’re preaching to the choir Ryne. Bunting with Wiggy at 3rd. Brilliant. He’s so slow, he should have a pickup truck in front of him and behind him with their yellow lights flashing! When the bullpen comes in to the game, I put on a rendition of “Send in the Clowns” and go up to bed.

      • schmenkman

        August 22, 2012 at 8:55 am

        Pierre bunted on his own.
