Hot Stove: Upton Meets with Phils, Melky to Jays

Per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, B.J. Upton reportedly met with the Phillies this week. Upton has been on a mini-tour of teams in the NL East this week, also reportedly meeting with the Braves earlier this week and the Nationals today. We reported on Monday that executives believed the Phillies would try to move quick to sign a center fielder, targeting Michael Bourn and then Upton. The Phils have also been linked to both Cody Ross and Josh Hamilton, presumably not for center field but rather a corner spot. The Hot Stove is starting to simmer.

Finally, potential Phils’ target Melky Cabrera signed for two years, $16 million today with the suddenly aggressive Toronto Blue Jays. Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes was the first to report the news and is surprising for both the length and annual value. Cabrera may play one of the corner outfield spots but will likely also time at DH with a team that already has Jose Batista, Colby Rasmus, Anthony Gose, Emilio Bonafacio, and Rajai Davis patrolling the Rogers Centre’s turf.

Hope the Phils aren’t left in the dust on this one. Don’t want Bourn or Hamilton.

Amen! I’d prefer Ross (ironic) and B.J. Upton.

It’s almost getting too crowded in Toronto. Encarnacion, their best player in 12 was the DH for half their games last year. They have 3 CF’s – I think there is another move coming, and I know a team that needs a CF. Rasmus, Davis or Bonafacio may have to be moved. Maybe The Dipsy had it right.

Davis and Gose are expendable. Gose will be back in AAA as he still doesn’t get on base enough to be a regular major leaguer but is still only 21 and Davis is a replacement player at this point. Bonifacio has enough versatility that it won’t be a problem keeping him around. And Rasmus, well, his clock is ticking. He’s underperformed expectations for the majority of his career, but he’s still young and has time. I doubt they totally give up on him, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him riding the pine a lot this season.

Either way, I don’t really think the Phillies should be looking to get the guys made expendable due to other teams signing free agents the Phils could have picked up. That said, I’m a big Gose fan, so if they were to get him back that’d be great, but there’s absolutely no reason for Toronto to trade a guy that young who still has a bunch of minor league options at this point.

As for Upton, I’m kind of apathetic on that front. I’d rather the Phils sign Pagan or Victorino and not have to surrender their first round pick, but of all the CF options left, I think Upton is probably the best player with the most upside remaining.
