Brian Bass Returns to Phillies Organization

http://media.lehighvalleylive.com/tom-hinkel/photo/brian-bass-777856701227b02b.jpgAccording to Baseball America, the Phillies have signed RHP Brian Bass to a Minor League deal. Bass, 31, last pitched in the Major Leagues in 2010 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and spent 2012 with Triple-A Oklahoma City in the Houston organization. Bass may be familiar and remembered by some Phillies fans as he pitched with Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2011. Bass is likely to return to Allentown to start 2013.

Bass is one of many players the Phillies have signed to fill out their Minor League ranks this off-season that have connections to Joe Jordan, Phillies Director of Player Development, who spent several years in the Baltimore organization. That list also includes pitcher Brandon Erbe and catcher Justin Dalles.

Pretty sure half these “depth” and “project” guys get cut in camp.

Speaking of retuyrning to the Phils, I’m picking up a story from hardly the usual sources that the Phils and Chad Durbin may be reuniting. The tone of it is pretty certain, but it’s not confirmed, and from an unusual source.

Is he still effective in middle relief?

Ya know, it’s such a crapshoot with so many relievers. He was pretty valuble to the Braves last year, stepping up for Peter Moylan when he went doiwn with a back injury, but the year before, he was not close to effective with Cleveland. Maybe he’s a guy you can get mileage out of with “proper” use. I suspect they’ll use him along the lines of a specialist (righty versus righty) and get his share of action during Kendrick and Lannan starts, or like Baez or Herndon, where he pitches in games the club is losing. I don’t see him as a candidate to emerge with the 7th inning assignment.

I do pretty firmly believe he’ll be an asset in working with the young pen guys, of which there are many. Certainly knows the drill of being a Phil, and playing in Philly.

The Phils blew it already for this year by not sending Howard, Kratz, Mayberry, Ruf, Brown to play Winter ball. If these guy would learn to hit; the no telling what the Phils could accomplish.
