2013 Spring Training

Hamels Dominates, Howard Stays Hot in 10-5 Win

Cole Hamels struck out five in three innings, scattering an unearned run in a 10-5 win over the Atlanta Braves behind big offensive days from Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Ben Revere.

The Good

Hamels again looked great and has yet to allow an earned run this Spring. Mike Adams made his first appearance of the Spring, striking out one with great movement on his pitches. The offense, led by two-hit days by Howard, Utley, and Revere put up 10 runs on 13 hits. Howard continued his scorching hot start with a 2-3 day with a double and a homer.

John Mayberry also homered, hoping to keep pressure on Dom Brown and Darin Ruf for playing time in the outfield. Brown  went 1-3 with a walk, looking very comfortable at the plate again while Ruf collected his first two hits of the Spring, going 2-3.

Jake Diekman pitched a scoreless fifth and prospect Ethan Martin pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th with a strikeout.

Areas of Oportunity

The only Phillie that really struggled with Jonathan Pettibone. Pettibone gave up two home runs, allowing the Braves to score four earned in two innings.

The Phillies will play the Yankees tomorrow at 1:05 PM at George Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa, FL.
