Why I Love the Phillies

Why I Love the Phillies – Laurie

I HATE the fans in Philadelphia. They love the Phillies only when they are winning but God forbid they lose or like this past season, crash and burn the…the so-called “fans” do nothing but trash them.

In 2009 after the Phillies lost the World Series to The Yankees I was wearing my Phillies jacket and a woman walking with her husband turned to him and said something like, “How dare she wear that jacket…they are #*(+@%^*I losers.” I turned to her and said, “A TRUE FAN LOVES THEIR TEAM REGARDLESS IF THEY WIN OR LOSE.”

They did not make it to the playoffs this year but I am STILL wearing my Phillies gear even though they traded Hunter and Shane.

This isn’t really an explanation of why someone loves the Phillies. This is an explanation of why some judgmental jagoff thinks she’s better than everyone else. Laura, if you read this: Get the f*** over yourself. And don’t call Hunter Pence by just his first name, he was barely ever a Phillie and he sucked when he was.

      1) It’s Laurie, not Laura.
      2) Pence spent about a year here, and hit .289/.357/.486 (.842 OPS), with 28 HR, and 94 RBI — he had one very good half, and one down half, but overall not bad at all
      3) many fans liked Pence from the moment he got here, and it’s not really up to any of us to judge who a fan can bond with, or what the minimum time for that would be

I wondered if this post would get any followup at all, and I see you got some, in addition to offering your own view. I had a feeling Laurie’s comment would go ignored, and then when you replied, I was going to ignore it, but have chosen otherwise since Schenkman selected to offer what I perceived as criticism of your post. The reason is to offer 2 cents in case others would seem to think of you as a jerk (not to put a word in Schenkman’s mouth), which I didn’t exactly find you to be.

Not that I’m a huge fan of Yankee fans, if I might generalize, but if I put the shoe on the other foot, I can see how a Yankee fan might be inclined to do some trash talking after that series. Jimmy chose to predict with his often portrayed swagger that the Phils’d win in 5, and I don’t think it’s unfair to say that as a whole, generally, there’s a pretty obnoxious air of jealousy that Philadelphia fans have toward New York. That doesn’t mean the Yankee fan was right, but I don’t need somebody telling me how to be a true sports fan, which like your conclusion, I took as arrogant. Not big deal arrogant, but I didn’t see much point to the Why I Love the Phils series including this particular post.

Regarding Pernce, if Schenkman’s listing of Pence’s stats meant a lot to you, so be it. That’s your perrogative to judge the guy’s contribution however you wish. It ain’t mine, and while I like Hunter Pence, pardon me for avoiding stats, but there’s a glaring non mention of how poor his defensive play was in 2012 that leaves a conclusion of “overall, not bad at all” as shall we say interesting.

That’s my opinion. If anyone don’t like it, think of Tommy Lee Jones response to Harrison Ford when the good doctor told him he didn’t kill his wife..

“Overall, not bad at all” was meant to include his often-spotty defense. And to discuss whether a player “sucked” or not, without discussing his on-field results doesn’t seem like informed way to go about it.

I think Laurie was just frustrated the way people express their feelings about their team. This is not life or death. It’s sports. Some of us are really passionate about our team because they are our team and we ultimately pay the player’s salary. Sometimes we just need to vent and say how we feel. I think the way each person expresses themselves is kind of cool. Believe me, Philly fans don’t even compare to new York fans. They really take their frustrations too far as I’m sure Boston fans also. I’ve lived in California for so long that my family are all giants and 49er fans. I think worst comments on a Blog that I’ve read is by far in Seattle. But it’s because fans love their team. Nobody literally hates pence, they might hate how he performed. Anyway, I keep reading this blog because I enjoy the passion and miss Philadelphia.
