Gameday: Phillies (6-7) vs. Reds (6-7)

Philadelphia Phillies (6-7) at Cincinnati Reds (6-7)

Kyle Kendrick (1-1, 5.40) vs. Homer Bailey  (1-1, 5.73)

Time: 7:10 pm, Great American Ballpark

Weather: 75% Chance of Thunderstorms, 68

The Phils will look to bounce back after losing a tough pitcher’s duel in the Queen City last night. Kendrick takes the hill against the Red Legs and may have his work cut out for him: current Reds hitters are hitting .349/.359/.635 with 5 HR in 66 PA against him.

Meanwhile, the Phils will look to solve Bailey, who has held the current Phils to a .244/.270/.314 line in 90 PAs. Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins have had the most success while Chase Utley has struggled against the 6’4″ righty. Bailey’s last outing against the Phils (August 21, 2012) ended with a W, giving up only two earned in 6.1 IP.

LINEUP: Revere CF, Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Young 3B, Brown LF, Nix RF, Quintero C, Kendrick P Your Gameday Beer – Rock Ice

This is a Costa Rican important that is generally noted as one of the nastiest, grossest, least-tasty beers on the market. So why is it the Gameday beer? I’m feeling a cold, rainy, nasty, ugly game where both teams will either hit the lights out or be stifled by accidentally fantastic pitching that is aided by the rain. It worked last week for Kendrick – here is hoping for a repeat performance!

Sometimes, things turn when you least expect them to. Maybe it’s not like making a west coast trip and wrapping a series against the Dodgers against Koufax and Drysdale, then heading north and starting off against Marichal, but in the next 3 games (after competent Homer Bailey) , the Phils face Latos, Wainwright, and I believe Shelby Miller will pitch Friday’s ballgame. Whether Miller is off to a fast start, or this is the time detiny has in mind for him to justify the Cards patience with his potential, who knows, but he’s pitched with great results in his forst 2 starts.

So if you THINK this offense is gonna wake up against THAT contingent, rotsa ruck. Fortunately, what you THINK don’t have much to do with the way it works out. But it sure isn’t gonna be easy, righties or not.

They missed Latos, he pitched Sunday, they get Mike Leake.

        April 16, 2013 at 7:09 pm

That’s exactly why I thought Latos was pitching. Dusty manages over there.

        How;s that for reconciliation?

Little easier matchup for sure. Not that much is easy these days.

just checked out Worleys stats to far. 14 runs in 2 starts. small sample size, but the revere trade looks good sof ar!

      April 16, 2013 at 7:11 pm

little skewed by getting racked his last start. I believe he gave up 3 runs in 7 innings against the Tigers on Opening Day. Yes, I said Opening Day in a discussion about Vanimal Worley.
      Wonders don’t never cease.

As far back as around February, it was expected that he would get the OD nod. They were totally hot to trot to get pitching this off season. By the way, Sterling Joe Bl;anton got wrapped around again last night, dropping his usually in character record to 0-3. I forget the line, but it wasn’t real good.

Well, with rain delay theatre on tap and sending local stations to regularly scheduled programming, its time for another exciting version of Jeopardy.

I’ll take are you kidding me for 400.

And the answer is Barry Zito, Jake Westbrook, Paul Maholm, Carlos Villaneueva. and Ross Detweiler,

And I’m sure the masses know with unabound certainty the winning question is who are the top 5 ERA guys in the National League starting play today. Just like I predicted in a white font before the season commenced.

Thanks. I posted this last night in game, and not that I expected a comment on it, but it wasn’t well timed to give people a chance to see it. But since Bennie made great defensive plays topical, this is a real favorite of mine and worth a look if you feel like checking it out as we’re not playing ball yet.

Rollins and revere are cold as ice at the top of the lineup right now. Thats a killer. They need to step it up!

Oh my, another ‘tough’ pitching performance. What is this now, 5 games in a row where the offense is no-see?

      April 16, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Maybe we should add a 3rd hitting coach?

  8. Brooks

    April 16, 2013 at 10:02 pm

What we have seen from Kyle is that when has a strong pitching performance its good for about 6 innings, which is fine but then of course he breaks down. 6 innings, 3 runs – that will do just fine for a #4 starter – but, 3 runs for this offense the way it currently is struggling is too much to overcome.

Solid pitching by Kendrick……Inept offense. This makes for a very dull game indeed.

Good for the Rain Delay – KK was not going to get the win anyway, his overall pitching stats look better and we dont have a loss – and, the best part is that maybe the Offense shows up tomorrow.

I love pitchers duels. That’s a hell of a lineup our pitchers have shut down so far. If it weren’t for the rain it would be a terrific game IMO. I hate when our pitching stinks and we can’t gain or hold a lead. Too bad theirs was great tonight as well.

I’m putting the over/under on Braves losses this season at 15. What got into those guys?, Upton never played like this in Arizona. We are the only team that beat them so far.

      April 16, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Justin Upton’s HR trend by season:
      2008- 15 in 108 ABs
      2009- 26 in 138 ABs
      2010- 17 in 133 ABs
      2011- 36 in 159 ABs
      2012- 17 in 150 ABs

On early pace this season to total a career high in HRs, right on his up and down trend in the early part of his career. I think he is the real deal and here to stay.

I would not mind seeing a pitchers duel 3 times a week, its good to know that you have some arms in the mix. But this is crazy. 5 games in a row now they cannot muster some offense. Braves are off to a tremendous start.

I think the starting pitching will be there for the phillies through the season and the middle relief will get better. We just need these guys to start hitting.

Any word on if they are going to get the rwoodaf this game in? I just realized that the Phillies have struck out 12 times tonight and have not walked once. Abysmal. Wouldn’t it be true Phillies fashion for this game to get going again and quickly lose it in the 9th. Knock on wood.
