2013 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies (9-12) vs. Pirates (11-9)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_R2yHiPgsajA/Si048xOKYNI/AAAAAAAABg0/Zr2Ct92C2ok/s400/pirates+logo.gifPhiladelphia Phillies (9-12) vs Pittsburgh Pirates (11-9)

Wandy Rodriguez (2-0, 0.56) vs. Roy Halladay (2-2, 6.04)

TIME: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV:
Comcast Sportsnet, home of Phillies Nation TV
Weather: 55, cloudy
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Roy Halladay has been much better in his last two starts.  He’ll try to keep it up tonight against the Pirates.  In his last two starts, Doc has posted a 1.80 ERA and limited opponents to a .143 batting average.  Doc also has career success against Pittsburgh, as he has a 4-1 record with a .098 ERA against them.

The Phillies offense has been lacking, and that may continue tonight against Wandy Rodriguez, who is off to a great start in 2013.  Rodriguez was scratched from his last start due to a strained hamstring, however.  Could his injury be a factor in tonight’s game?

Lineup: New look lineup with Utley 2nd and Young 3rd.

Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Young 3B, Howard 1B, Mayberry RF, Brown LF, Revere CF, Quintero C, Halladay P.

Go Phillies!

Just looking at some Phillies splits for the season so far:

Team batting vs. RHP .264/.315/.397 14 HR 61 RBI
(The NL average vs. RHP is .250/.316/.397)
Team batting vs. LHP .182/.239/.280 0 HR 7 RBI
(The NL average vs. LHP is .245/.313/.379)

    Infielder’s batting: .275/.321/.414 8 HR 42 RBI
(The average NL infielder is .253/.321/.396)
    Outfielder’s batting: .208/.278/.296 3 HR 15 RBI
(The average NL outfielder is .262/.331/.421)

Team batting 1st time facing SP in game: .294/.352/.458 5 HR 22 RBI
Team batting 2nd time facing SP in game: .253/.295/.382 4 HR 11 RBI
Team batting 3rd time facing SP in game: .242/.312/.323 0 HR 9 RBI

Obviously, the team’s ineptitude against LHP and the total absence of production from the outfield are major issues so far this season. They are the only team in the NL without a HR against a LHP. It’s also interesting how they actually do worse against an opposing pitcher the second and third time through the order. Maybe it’s case of opposing pitchers making better adjustments than the hitters.

7 career on the trivia question would prompt a confident answer of Smokey Burgess.

    Now 7 in 1 season, that’s a tough one.

For your trivial entertainment, although there are larger fishes to fry, though you wouldn’t know it from the ballclub’s struggles.

7 shutout innings from 34 tonight, ERA drops to 4.64

    8 of the same = 4.49

    9,unlikely as it is = 4.34

Long road to sub 4. Other direction, Hamels is at 5.40.

Ken it seems to me that the phillies offene has really sucked since the Brett Myers Houston binocular debacle.

I kind of think that may have been real.

    Thoughts?

That was before the game in which they beat the Reds 22-1 one night at the Bank I think. If it was after, ya never know.

Howard just won the way over portion of the o/u.

That is one of the more incredible innings I recall in ages. 3 ball counts all over the place, not a hit, and striking out the side. Not walking Marte, had he struck him out would really have made it something. Just strange. Where he goes from here? Good grief. What a puzzle. But the Pirates didn’t hit him.

A 25 pitch first inning usually means the bullpen will be called on fairly early.

    Question for Chuck A – – –

take me back to your childhood. Firstest glove you ever owned. Ya know how they stamp, or print a player’s signature on there? Whoi’s name was on your first mitt?

Mine was Reds shortstop Roy McMillian. First bat I owned had The Mick’s signature imprinted.

    Just a tad off topic.

After this loss if Jimmy is in the line up tomorrow I am going to be angry.

    The Pirates announcers roasted him

I am gonna guess Wheeler and Mccarthy so no fault.

When I die he will be my favorite phiillies manager ever.

I blame this teams state 100% on Amaro though

    April 24, 2013 at 10:24 pm

Wow. That sucked a lot. Another impressive starting pitching performance down the drain, and some offensive punch (3 runs, woohoo!) wasted.
@Schmenkman: Where do the Phillies rank in GIDPs? I’m just curious because it seems like they are more abundant than ever this year! Thanks in advance.

    • Rudy Canoza

      April 24, 2013 at 10:46 pm

Entering this game the Phillies led the NL in GIDP with 21 and they added two more tonight. Most NL teams were around 15. The Mets had the least with 7.

The Phillies’ two HRs tonight were their first against LHP.

    • schmenkman

      April 24, 2013 at 10:48 pm

They lead the NL, both in number (21 thru yesterday), and % of opportunities (15.6%).

    Andrew,
I hope you are right. I am no fan of charlie’s, but unfortunately, he will take the fall for the one truly at fault, ruben. The guy was given keys to the cadillac and he drive it off the cliff!

regarding ben revere…i was not a fan from the moment i heard what we gave up. while i know worley is more 4/5, why did you throw in may. he struggled as a 22 yr old in AA last year, but has always given up less than 1 hit per inning and struck out over 1 per.

bottom line, charlie and ruben need to go!
