Gameday: Phillies vs. Braves – Phillies Nation
2013 Gameday

Gameday: Phillies vs. Braves

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves

Cole Hamels vs. Tim Hudson

Time: 7 PM, Turner Field
TV: PHL 17, ESPN2
Weather: Clear, 62
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Baseball is back. Be excited.

The 2013 season kicks off against the division rival Atlanta Braves, a team the Phillies will certainly be jockeying with for position in the playoff race. But for tonight, it’s just game one of 162. And it’s a solid match up on the hill.

Cole Hamels is the Opening Day starter, and why not? He’s enjoyed success against the Braves during his career and hopes to carry that into the opener. Hamels sports a 3.57 ERA against the Braves in 27 career starts, going 12-7. He hardly owns them, but in an early season matchup with a strikeout-heavy lineup, it’s quite appealing.

Tim Hudson is the Braves #1 this year, and we’ve also seen plenty of him. Ryan Howard likes to face the righty, putting up a career slash line of  .338/.436/.708 with 7  home runs.

Enjoy the game!

LINEUP: Revere CF, Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Young 3B, Brown LF, Mayberry RF, Kratz C, Hamels P

QUESTIONS: Which Phillie needs to get off to a hot start to ensure a solid April? Should Cole Hamels have kept the mustache a little longer?

Need to win this game to catch the Nats and Mets.

I am startng Freeman and Howard.

Young on the bench. So he will probably have a big game.

    Got phils.

    Everyone enjoy the season.

I think this year can be alot of fun.

This team reminds me a little of the 83 team.

I also think if Doc and Lee stink this could be a 95-100 loss team.

I will be watching the phils feed. Not ESPN.

I miss me some Chris Wheeler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Like the werewolf of london.

    His hair is perfect!

        Thanks for caring Ken E.

        You might like this

Edinson Volquez had a 1 day stay on my team.

I am sporting a nice 9 ERA now.

        He wont be back.

If Tim Hudson is the Braves’ Ace of the Staff, then I fail to see why everyone is so excited over that team. I’m not buying it. I’m not a huge fan of either upton brother. Think they’re both very overrated and overhyped by the national media. I think the Phillies are a better team than the Braves. and I mean all around. Better offense, better starting pitching, and better bullpen.

The ultimate reason why fantasy baseball ruins the fandom, you can really be phillies fan and hope Freeman goes 3-4 with a HR and 4 RBI. And secondly how can you start a wahsed up liability who can not hit run or field at first base?

But seriously I know everyone on hear wants Revere to lead off, and you can not have four lefties in a row, and I hope it works out, but I really think the phillies are a better offensive team when JRoll leads off, i would like to see M Young batting 2nd, and right now it would put JMJ batiing fifth, or have three lefties in a row with Brown there. Any way I feel positive about Cole tongith GO PHILLIES

And brawler on the first day, great choice guys.

Howard is in one of my 2 utility spots.

I refuse to play him at first. If he takes a walk this year I am insering a pinch runner too.

I thought about benching freeman for Young.

But I like Freeman vs our pen more than Young vs Hudson.

Agree on Hudson not being a top tier starter anymore.

And I am not all gaa gaa goo goo over the Braves.

    Nats are the main competetion.

That’s great timing by both of you. Ta gotta love somebody who logs out 20 seconds after the last pitch last year, and checks back in 20 seconds before 2013 PHILLIES BASEBALL! Hopefully, you have a longer season to hang around this year.

    GO PHILS!!!!!!!

Hope Revere goes nuts on the bases tonight!

    Utley and Howard power.

3 hits from Young. HR from Brown.

Hamels 7 shutout innings, Adams, and Papelbon.

    One thing continues.

Look at all the empty seats in Atlanta.

    • Ken Bland

      April 1, 2013 at 7:11 pm

it is a sellout. I guess they have good hot dogs at the stands there.

Now where I read there were a lot of empty seats today was at Yankee Stadium. But it was a sellout, or close, announced 49K plus.

    April 1, 2013 at 7:11 pm

The astro’s and rangers sold out…braves are a joke if they can’t.

  11. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 7:12 pm

We’ll be seeing plenty of empty seats at home this year. The team is pulling all kinds of promos to see tickets, but I think there are still some left for the home opener.

What’s the deal with the patches on the uniforms?

    • Ken Bland

I’ll guess it’s an Opening Day patch, but I don’t know,

  14. Ken Bland

  16. CS

    April 1, 2013 at 7:32 pm

The patch is for Newtown, CT, and that was a bit to long of a start for Cole. Work out the nerves and win this.

    • Ken Bland

      April 1, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Troe, I forgot about that. Not Newtown, but the patch. Thx 4 the correction.

    April 1, 2013 at 7:40 pm

    Argh.

  21. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 7:41 pm

That’s a painful at bat by Mayberry. You fall behind 2-zip against Hudson, there’s no such thing as early yet. Have to take advantage of 2 on opportunities. In last year’s opener, Galvis hit into 2 double playts, but they won 1-0. Really have to hope they stay out of that nonsense the rest of the way.

  22. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 7:44 pm

oh my… well, Cole has nobody to blame but himself tonight. The “keys to the game” said that the defense wasn’t reliable for him last year.

  23. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 1, 2013 at 7:45 pm

Wow Ken What if Lee Hlladay and Hamels stink?

    Not good

    • Ken Bland

      April 1, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Then Kendrick and Lannan need to both pull Denny McLains.

      Or Jack Chesboros.

So at least there’s a choice.

  24. Jeff of Nova

    April 1, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Everyone is talking about the Nats, I see the Braves being the team to worry about, their lineup top to bottom can flat out hit the ball yard and they have a strong staff

  25. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 1, 2013 at 7:48 pm

I got Freeman in the 7th and Howard in the 8th round.

    I do hate he Braves.

Hitting 4th in a major league line up shuold afford you RBI chances.

also have Cabrerra and Billy Butler.

So far Howard s 0-1 for me.

    • novacats

      April 1, 2013 at 7:52 pm

      Hamels getting rocked
Haladay can’t get over 85 mph
The only chance with this lineup is pitching and it ain’t gonna happen.

  26. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 7:50 pm

So the Phils need to score at least 4, which requires heroes, as in plural. Maybe 1 guy could do it, but who can step up big time? It’ll be interesting to see who answers the call, unless this game is already out of reach.

  27. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 1, 2013 at 7:56 pm

I definately like Rollins not hitting lead off.

  28. Morris Buttermaker

    April 1, 2013 at 7:59 pm

Down by 3 in the 3rd inning of the first game of the year. Looks like I won’t need to worry about paying for playoff tickets again this year.

  29. Lefty

    April 1, 2013 at 8:03 pm

@ Andrew- Are you getting the game on ESPN2? Or just ht Braves feed?

  30. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Well, the good news is: Dom is learning to play balls off the wall. He was a mess with that in Spring Training.

  31. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Take a stab at some thinking here, if, for cryting out loud, they can hold them here.

Jimmy making the last out sets up Utley, Howard, Young and Brown as the first 4 next inning. Chase isn’t Chase against Hudson, but it’s not a bad 4 to send up and try to avoid not scoring a runner in scoring position for the third straight inning.

  32. Andrew from Waldorf

    April 1, 2013 at 8:05 pm

    Watching on the deuce

There’s just no getting rid of that guy.

    • Lefty

      April 1, 2013 at 8:09 pm

The deuce has flippin’ ESPN News on mine. I hate the Braves broadcasts, oh well, it’s all I’m getting.

      • Ken Bland

        April 1, 2013 at 8:18 pm

I used to like Pete Van Wieren (sic), and I like Joe Simpson. Skip was tremendous. I’m told Chip is a really solid person. but I wonder if his broadcasting isn’t a sign of his being adopted. John Sterling did the Braves years ago, and actually was pretty good as memory goes, mostly, I guess because with TV, you could see what was happening whereas with his radio work, it’s like what game is he watching?

Well, there’s a hero. Now we need more, or Chase to hit a couple more.

  36. Double Trouble Del

So much for Charlie’s gut feeling to start JMJ instead of Nix.

  37. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 8:31 pm

This game kind of reminds of the opener against Houston 2-3 years back now where the Phils didn’t hit all game, then Mayberry got the game winner in maybe the 10th. The crowd was really pissy as the Phils left at least 4 men on base every inning.

The problem, in addition to needing to keep the Braves at 4, is the pen backing Hudson up, and especially with a day off tomorrow.

That’s a play there that wouldn’t have taken a superhuman effort for Mike Young to keep in the infield. But he made a nice play right before it.

  38. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Wow! Our first no-run inning! Things are looking up!

  39. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Don’t ask me how it can happen, but if the bottom of the order here could somehow set up a couple and if the Phils could get to Howard this inning would be one way to do it, it’d be sweet. You’ never know it by the proclamations of the season being down the toilet already on this game thread, but it’s only a 3 run lead, and Hamels is more likely to settle in than keep getting beat.

    • Ken Bland

      April 1, 2013 at 8:45 pm

ask and ye shall receive? So far, so perfect with Chase at the plate, and they are filled around the sacks.

  41. Morris Buttermaker

    April 1, 2013 at 8:40 pm

Is Nix on the Invisible List again this year? I don’t think I have ever seen him actually play for the Phillies.

  42. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 8:44 pm

Tremendous at bat by Revere so far.

He caps this off, and it might be the unheralded at bat of the game.

    And he did his part.

    Cmon, Jimmy.

  43. Tracey

    (holding my breath…)

  44. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 8:46 pm

Revere did a beatiful job of working the count. He took about 12 pitches to get that walk, and now the pitcher is reaching his limit.

  45. Morris Buttermaker

    April 1, 2013 at 8:47 pm

    Utley saves the season again!

  46. Tracey

  47. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 8:48 pm

here we go, RyHo for the lead.

    Here we go, Andrew.

    Money at bat now.

  48. Morris Buttermaker

    April 1, 2013 at 8:49 pm

Phils always get to Hudson 3rd time through the lineup

  49. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 8:49 pm

That’s a really early pitching change for a guy who started out so strong. The Phillies really worked the pitcher tonight, which is something they didn’t do well last year.

  50. Glutenous

    April 1, 2013 at 8:49 pm

Ryan Howard is the most overpaid platoon bat ever. Just little league against any kind of LHP. Pathetic.

  57. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 8:56 pm

    Rats. But we’re chipping away…

  58. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 8:57 pm

That’s an excellent inning. Cole has a chance to still show what being an OD pitcher is all about by pitching to the score. It’d be just criminal to lose this game 4-3. Gotta keep working this sucker.

  59. Jeff of Nova

    April 1, 2013 at 8:57 pm

Howard pressed way to much at that at bat and Dom made good contact, just shattered his bat…. hope that one was not “wonder boy”

Don’t worry Cole, there are a few parks where those balls wouldn’t have gone out. Such as Yellowstone.

  63. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Conversely to his previous at bat, which was terrific, if Bennie manages to get a hit in that instance, it would have been huge. I would imagine Flaherty works next inning, so it may require a lefty swinging well agaiunst him. No small task. I assume Durbin’s on here?

  64. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 9:13 pm

OK, let’s see what the new-and-improved bull pen can do.

Game is out of hand now. Lets hope Wednesday goes better but I’m not too optimistic about that with the way Roy has looked. It will be nice if they can avoid a sweep to start the season.

  68. Tracey

    April 1, 2013 at 9:22 pm

Hmn… if he hadn’t bobbled that, it might have been a triple-play… probably not.

  69. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 9:26 pm

I don’t know about out of hand, but it’s certainly a big uphill climb.

The only thing I can say about Doc Wednesday is it’ll be his 4th straight outing since he started working in regular rhythm again. I’m hopeful that helps. Another 4 after that, and we’ll see where he is. It SHOULD get better. If he does win, it’s 200 on the career. It’ll be nice to see that in a Phils uni.

    • Glutenous

      April 1, 2013 at 9:32 pm

Not out of hand per se, but all that positive energy from the rally is gone. Wind taken out of the sails.

      • Ken Bland

        April 1, 2013 at 9:42 pm

Yeah, that’s what a good club will do, beat you back down when you get up off ther mat. Still, it’s only a run deficit. Stranger things have happened, just don’t ask me to name any.

Walden should be interesting. He’s good, but also can be horrible. We’ll see what happens.

        Course Kimbrel’s still around.

  70. Tracey

That last run was all Chase Utley. The Man.

  74. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Mayberry is very athletic. He picked the wrong sport. His dad wasn’t exactly a baseball specimen, but you’d never know it from his numbers. Looks like Junior could play hoops or football easily enough. Niot that he’s a bad baseball player, but he just looks like he might have been good at other sports.

2 run game and Chase should hit again.

Just how much can The Man do in 1 night.

  75. Ken Bland

    April 1, 2013 at 9:54 pm

At least 3 innings with RISP and they got stranded. You can’t knock ’em all in, but it speaks to how the Phils have been “around” all night. Bravw pitching gets a lot of credit for beend, but not break.

Kimbrel with a 2 run lead. Well, hopefully 2. That should be lights out, but if the Phils can get Chase and RyHo up with a guy on, maybe we have some high drama.

Course the way this stuff works, Phils will take the lead, and give it back in the 9th. Been there, done that.

  76. Andrew from Waldorf

    This is vintage Phillies.

    Howard is a stat compiler.

Every time theres a runner on 3rd and the score is 9-1 he gets that run in.

But he is what he is.

If the season is really bad he will complie good stats and help my fantasy team I will be happy.

“If the games arent close and he can run up some numbers.”

Is this about Howard? If so it’s simply not true. Howard hits better in high leverage situations than low leverage. And he hits better when it’s close than when it’s a blowout.

I hate the braves and their fans.

    Their broadcast is the worst.

The only thing worse is Mike Emerick doing a hockey game.

Oh well there is always Wednesday.

Lets hope was an aberation for Cole.

I havent used Cole Shambles in a few years.

Nice to see Utley play well.

Rivera a nice game too. I like so far.

Ken if you are watching the Cards vs Dbacks. I have Carlos Beltran too.

Another one of our all time favorites! Reyes too lol

These are the kind of games we need to win as the season progresses. 5 runs with the Ace on the mound. Can’t win em all. Long season. Go get em on Wednesday.

    Utley looked fine but nervous.
Other than Ryan not seeing the left part of the infield and Durbin forgetting to punch in – it was a good game; Young did nto look that good at 3rd and I could not wait to see Krazt leave the game.
